The point of being in the cave was to hide from the institute, and I suppose being ordered around by other super mutants or killed by wastelanders by living somewhere else would have been a problem to him, but he certainly had more than one option as a super mutant.

Would be nice to have the choice is my point, after all the main story line is a bit too lead by the nose, sure the game is a sandbox, but most of the fights break out one way or another... Like the Battle for Bunker Hill, It's a big F* you, because even if you tell the brotherhood and the railroad or not, they will all be there, ready to fuck each other and you if they are your enemies...

Not likely without a full Fallout series reboot like they're doing with Mass Effect. If they stick how it is, SM's will still need to be around to cater for certain past decisions (such as helping/hindering Vergil), assuming any of F4's story has any impact whatsoever on future (non-DLC) Fallouts.

Virgil said it would take decades to possibly generalize the cure. The experimenting went wrong before, his "cure" could very well lead to a new strain of super mutants far worse than the ones that exist. Just because he cured one strain doesn't mean that his tampering will lead to a cure.

That would depend on how it is experimented with. There's no logical reason for any of it to be tested on humans or non-super mutants, so that leaves supermutant lab-rats. Worst case, they become super-duper mutants as opposed to cured. I don't see it leading to a full-blown 'new' strain outside of mutating the already mutated. Regardless, this was all setup in a way where any outcome is possible, but we won't see any of it in the near future (heck, maybe not at all depending on where they take the series from here).

Yes, but the situation involves one lone guy without any support generalizing a single-strain cure that has no real reason to be used/tested on normal people (and won't be seen for, at least, two decades if he's even remotely accurate and we assume he makes it a reality), versus other examples like a faction kidnapping and forcefully dunking unwilling people into vats full of gunk to create supermutants en masse. Again, all I can see is a case of SM's becoming Super-SM's or something worse, but whatever happens will be down to the devs (and it'll likely be something completely different to what any of us expect, if it is even mentioned again at all).

Guys, it's an RPG, not a tactical shooter. VATS already makes the combat trivial even with bullet sponges, so having insta-headshot deaths regardless of weapon or character levels would wreck any sense of character progression, which is what you play an RPG for in the first place. You can mod it if you wish, much like you can reduce the difficulty so that everything dies in a few bullets if you want 'realism', but I hate using words like that with games involving nuclear apocalypse, zombies, super-mutants, gargantuan insects etc. etc.

The main writing was weaker in 4 than previous games, definitely. They made improvements with companion dialogue and characterization, but the other writing suffers. Then again it's Bethesda. They're really good with the worlds they work on, but not so much the dialogue and writing.

He loves it either way - this is a Super Mutant who wants to be Human again (Mutant Virgil) and/or wants to turn other Super Mutants into Humans (Human Virgil). I wanted to kill him by punching him in the toe-nail but had activated VATS with a rifle and figured I'd roll with it.

As much as I love Fallout 4, not as much as Fallout new Vegas, it always bothered me that you couldn't cure strong. And it sounds like that concept wasn't even thought of.

Curing the FEV would be a major step towards rebuilding a sustainable infrastructure in the US wasteland. If you can't make enough of the cure figuring out how to control them could be even more beneficial. Shooting them with a chip that allows you to control the decisions of SMs would be fantastic. You could use the SMs to thin out the Raiders.

In real life I would've supported Virgil, his work can improve and save thousands of lives in the Commonwealth, hell maybe the Capital Wasteland, or even the entire American East Coast. It's extremely rare that you find a Super Mutant who doesn't want to rip you apart on sight, generally they attack people and raid settlements. I'm sorry but people bringing up the counter argument of "consent" for curing Super Mutants is complete bullshit to me, I honestly do not see the negatives anywhere on turning all Super Mutants back into humans.
