It's retro-futurism. It's how people in the 50s-60s imagined the future would look like. The games were very inspired by 50s sci-fi b-movies, mad max, a boy and his dog and such. The series really captured the atmosphere, humor and violence of the games! Almost all the songs in the show are also in the games.

It is but I like that they tried to explain it as a what if scenario. What if the transistor and hence the microchip and hence computers and all other things that rely on microchips weren't invented until something like 100 years after they should. No computers, no internet until much later. Alternate tech having more focus, etc...
@friescustomfabriction30165 ай бұрын
@mattp6089 I don't know if the transistor was ever invented in the fallout universe. They still use vacuum tube terminals for computers. And the pip boy originally had small vacuum tubes in it. They focused on nuclear and miniaturized it. I guess maybe institute developed some after the bombs fell. But pre war I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be all analog 🤷♂️

@@AFMountaineer2000 Pretty much what danielk highlighted. The history of the Fallout universe was pretty much a reflection of our own history up until 1969 when things started to Diverge. For example in 1969 the United States reorganizes into thirteen commonwealths adopting a new flag that we see throughout all the Fallout games. The same year Valiant 11 lands on the moon with USSA astronauts Richard Wade, Mark Garris, and Michael Hagen become the first humans to walk on the Moon. I should point out that in 1961 Captain Carl Bell of the United States Space Agency becomes the first human in space (according to the U.S Government) but his capsule crashed while returning to Earth killing him. This could be scene as the divergence as well but 1969 is when a bunch of historical events happened that differ from our own history.

Great reaction like always love the "Please Remain Calm" because these standard turrets can't hit shit, even if a target stands still. It's a meme from the games. The name of the Bear thing is a "Yao Gui" A lot of the songs you are hearing, are actual songs that play in the game. It's a real treat for us that adore the game. The knight turning out to be a freaked out and cowardly Michael Rappaport had me cracking up. That last weapon that lucy cut the doctor's head is the ripper from the games lol So a bit of non-spoiler-y background information that doesn't really get explained in the show: The Fallout world basically diverges from ours in the 1940s. Transistor-based technology (specifically micro-transistors, the things that make computers and any compact advanced electronics possible) is never invented. This is why everything is big and chunky and looks like it was designed in the 50s. Instead nuclear technology advances rapidly and becomes part of many everyday household items (the cars, for example, are all nuclear powered). This is why everything has a 1950s retro sci-fi look (and because it evokes that weird 1950s vintage optimism mixed with the ever present threat of nuclear war). Lucy is modelled on a prototypical player character from the franchise. In many of the games you start out as a vault dweller who has to venture to the surface for one plot contrivance or another (in the very first game it was because the water purification system was broken and you had to go find a part, so the show did a bit of a nod to that). The montage of her explaining her skills is kind of like the character setup where you choose your stats and skills. The syringes you see in the show are Stim-paks which are the game's major source of healing. This is one thing that I like in the show. It treats itself like it is the game. When you use a Stim-pak in the game, it heals every thing instantly. Even broken bones. Thus, when you see the Ghoul use it on the dog who is on on death's doorstep, the dog instantly gets up and is 100% healed. The Brotherhood of Steel is a faction that was born out of remnants of the US military based around a pseudo-religious, militaristic tech cult. That's probably kind of obvious given their organization, but there is a direct connection back to the pre-war era, and most of their tech is ex-military from that era, just salvaged and maintained. Depending on the game/location (the games are set in several different locations around the US, with the originals set on the west coast, and the newer games on the east coast, and New Vegas set in, well, Vegas) they can range from fascistic antagonists to chivalric allies depending on the chapter. Much like the medieval knights they're based on. The other big faction to get a mention in this episode was The Enclave. Where the BoS are remnants of the US military, The Enclave are the remnants of the US government along with anyone else they deemed worthy of surviving the apocalypse - the best and brightest of science and industry. They're a tad... elitist, as you can probably imagine, looking down on most of the other survivors, and preferring to interact and manipulate events from the shadows or a distance. Unlike the BoS who focus on collecting and preserving old world tech, The Enclave continued to innovate and advance. Stimpaks, the thing Lucy injects herself with, are the main healing item in the game. So you'll see a bit of video game logic here where a shot will cure any basic wound. And unlike a bunch of other video game adaptations, this show is actually considered canon within the same world as the games. So that's just kinda neat. Keep up the good work.

Goggins was amazing as the Ghoul, and his "subtle" hints at his emotions and inner humanity still being there throughout the episodes were expertly hinted at through his actions and his voice. Definitely my favorite character, and I love the pre-bombing scenes. Lucy played by Ella Purnell (also did Jinx in Arcane) had the right amount of annoying optimism, but also like, devolving into disappointment as the world isn't what she thought it would be, even if she found a knight in shining armor Speaking of the Knight, I absolutely loved that interrogation scene with Maximus in the first episode! Aaron Moten killed it as Maximus, easy to see the choices a player has to do either the moral OR immoral thing and I think he portrayed those emotions well. Getting a cool set of armor like that in the games IS a pretty fun switch up, but doing so by letting the knight die is one of those "what to do" situations

The Fallout games, specially 3, New Vegas and 4 are actually very story-driven, but also very non-linear, because there is so much to, so many quest lines and side quests, all with their own little dramas. But the main arc is always very story driven and compelling. As the fans usually say: no one plays Fallout for the graphics.
@mercb3ast5 ай бұрын
Tell me you haven't played 1 and 2 without telling me you you haven't played 1 and 2. They were also story driven. In fact, they were entirely story driven, and very much linear compared to the standard Bethesda gaming experience. Also, despite the fact they are quite old now. In relative terms, they are both better games than what any of the Bethesda fallout games were. That is to say, if you judge them in the time they released, they stood out more than when the Bethesda games released. The only one that really comes close to them is New Vegas, and Bethesda didn't make that one.
@Stubbies20035 ай бұрын

@jhmi78775 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was going to say, who thinks Fallout is not story-driven? It sometimes tells stories a bit differently from many story-driven games out there, sure. Such as using the environment heavily for providing information to where heaps of trash or old posters on the wall give you details about events and characters (much like how anthropologists piece together human history through similar means, probably part of why I love the Fallout world so much). Or, like you said, the story is also non-linear so it again doesn't follow a lot of what other RPGs do. But all that definitely adds to its story-driven nature instead of away from it. Just a bit confused why anyone would say that who say they're a fan of the games XD I guess they can just be a fan of the themes and not pay attention to the narrative at all.

The show did a great job showing the retro-futurism, the humor and such of the game, I love that they used a lot of the same songs that they use in the game, so much fun walking around in a post-apocalyptic world listening to Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire and The Ink Spots' - I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire.which imo is the most iconic from the games. The Fall Out games were the first that got me to buy figurines and such based off the game, a have a few Nuka-Cola's and some Vault Boy's in my room to this day. The aesthetic is just great. Some nice little...Easter Eggs? That are from the show are the turret that was shooting the Dr, they are TERRIBLE in game and they showed it in the show by him just basically walking without a scratch and the Stim-Pak's just magically healing terrible wounds, like the dog getting stabbed.
@wanderingidle48485 ай бұрын
This has to be the best video game adaptation ever made. Fallout is an open world RPG, so while each game is set in the same world, the choices you make determine how the story unfolds for your unique character. There are often dialogue choices where you're given options of how to respond, which will send your character down a different story path, and in the show this is really subtly represented by how how each of the characters pause for a few seconds any time they're faced with a big decision. Every time Lucy says "okey dokie" that's her having just made one of those narrative decisions. Each character also begins with certain stats that you choose at the beginning, and which increase the more you use them, and that's shown by Lucy going over her different hobbies and jobs when applying for marriage. You can kind of guess the other characters' stats. Maximus has high endurance and HP because he always gets beat up but can still get back up, but he has low charisma (e.g. he tries to haggle for a lower price but has to go sell a tooth instead). The ghoul basically has maxed out stats because he's been alive for so long (i.e. played the game longer than everyone else). It's also funny you pointing out how unrealistic it is that the Santa Monica pier would still be standing. That's one of the things in the games that always made me laugh. Obviously they need to have recognizable landmarks in whatever city each game is set in, but sometimes it's so comically absurd that some of these things are still standing that it's basically a self-aware joke.

Geography: Lucy's vault is in what is now known as The Boneyard (LA ruins). Filly was built from a landfill in the area, unclear which one. The Hub may or may not be still standing in present day Barstow (origin of bottle caps as a clean water-backed currency), and Junktown may still be there in the ruins of Ridgecrest. Shady Sands was originally around Darwin CA in Fallout 1, but then its location was retconed in Fallout 2 to somewhere in NorCal, but in the show it seems to be back in its Fallout 1 location. Or possibly President Tandi may have founded a second settlement in NorCal and also named it Shady Sands. The Commonwealth referenced by the Brotherhood is in Massachusetts (setting of Fallout 4), where the East Coast chapter of the Brotherhood is located.

According to the New Vegas citizen test, the capitol wasn't called Shady Sands anymore during that time: "What was the original name of the NCR Capitol?" And in Fallout 2, the retconned capitol closer to San Francisco (around Fresno) was called just NCR. So they probably just renamed another town Shady Sands (probably at the Darwin location from Fallout 1). Also, the scale of the Fallout world is 1/25 the size of ours, hence how the protagonists of the games can walk the distances they do each game.

Los Angeles isnt on the coast. Vault 33 is 100% in Santa Monica, about 30 minutes drive outside LA....or 2-6 hours with traffic lmao
@swissarmyknight43065 ай бұрын
@@mxviii Well there's no traffic in Fallout, and yes 33 is in Santa Monica, which no longer exists. The Boneyard extends far beyond the LA city limits. The Boneyard is almost the "LA county ruins".

Fallout is my favourite game series. The show was excellent and did the lore perfect justice. Natalie your hair is awarded prettiest in reaction channel awards. You should play fallout 4 and upload. It’s the best one to start with if it’s new to you

Not a complaint at all because I know the full length reactions are available elsewhere - but this is one I would have loved to see full video for each episode. For some reason I have a harder time watching reactions while watching the original content on another screen. Either way awesome to see Natalie react to this one - it's been my favorite series this year thus far. Could end up being that my favorite tv series of the year ends up being a video game adoption two years in a row.

Some factions of the Brotherhood reward raw ambition more than brute force or skill. That’s how situations like Maximus’ happens. Also becoming a Squire is not the promotion most would want. Anything that requires Power Armor to deal with can likely kill light armored solders in seconds so Squires are consistently around super dangerous situations.

Some Fallout factoids for you Nat: That turret at the beginning of episode 2 canonically can't aim worth a shit and tries to make up for it with volume of fire Dogmeat (the dog's actual name) is basically indestructible, which is also canon to the games, so you can rest easy The Ghoul actually has better filtration than most of the other characters precisely because he's been on the surface for so long

I think open world nature of the games allows for good adaptation because writers have more freedom to make whatever story they want in that world.

The producers built a mock-up wasteland village for "Filly" in Austin, TX in March for the SXSW Festival. I got real Nuka-Cola and a Vault 33 pin. It seemed to have all the authentic props. For anyone who wants to check it out, many pics are online.

Books. Covers. And Judgments..... I seem to recall... We have a few sayin's about such matters. 🤔 Fallout is so good at telegraphing to you "A thing" is about to happen, Leading you to it by your nose, Then slapping your assumptions and preconceptions with a twist. 😁👍
