They do an amazing amount of marketing research. They know exactly what gamers want. THEN THEY IGNORE IT. We tell them we don't want heavy-handed, current world politics. So they give it to us. We don't want gender and sexual politics, so they give it to us in spades. We tell them we want fidelity to the core of intellectual property, so they gender and race swap IPs that have been around for 50+ years. We want good-looking heroic avatars, so they give fat, ugly characters. Worst of all, we want challenges and now you can't fail. Are there any modern CRPGs where your companion can end up with permadeath? Lydia died to a giant in Skyrim. I lost Minsc in a Baldur's Gate run. I've had other companions in various CRPGs end-up permanently killed. Now they mere 'get knocked out' and revive when combat is over. That''s just ONE ASPECT of the 'You cannot fail' design of these games. It makes them dull.

As a game dev from the 90s and early 2000s, I remember when games were NOT designed by committee. There was a visionary who knew what they wanted, and got it made with disciples of said vision. HOPING it would gel with the market. I think Tim is being obtuse and pedantic because he's forgotten the old ways. When I worked at Sony my producers BRAGGED saying: " The customer doesn't know what it wants...we tell them." They were right in comparison. I think I speak for most gamers when I say that what we want most. We want developers that don't allow their employees to go on social media and insult us when we say we don't like something about a game. Any employee that does this should be fired! We want games that are finished and not full of inexcusable bugs on day one or require a massive day one patch. We want games that don't go out of their way to push a real life social or political agenda. No game should feel like propaganda for a real life movement. We want games that aren't full of paywalls, loot boxes, or other heavy monetization. If there is paid DLC, it had better be worth it.

Tim Cain has a point though, unironically. The fact that I hated Veilguard for example doesn't mean that the game is not what the developers wanted. It means that I am not the target audience. And even when I feel that I can give constructive feedback (in a way what Tim Cain mentioned), and I _feel_ that my opinion is the majority (which is a false assumption), Bioware could simply decide that "okay dude, feedback registered, but you are not our target niche" The issue here, I think, is when bioware decided to abandon the crpg grognards like me, they didn't think that their new target audience (who want "life is strange: cozy café the veilguard") is even smaller than what they had in the past (crpg fans).
