When you're on your first game through, you might not even know of it. So much better than: "Do you see now, father? The institute is the betterment of mankind." The Master has actual goals that are clear. Actual regrets and most of all humanity left. The Father in Fallout 4 was just... Hollow and empty. He was a good villain in the sense of meeting a criteria, but he was one of the most basic 'for the greater good' villain ever. The most tragic part of The Master is that he simply wanted a place in the world. Richard was banished from his original Vault after being accused of murder, which: after seeing how basically everyone in Vault 8 was a pretentious asshole in Fallout 2, it'd be easy to assume that the charges were complete hogwash. Then he made a new home out of The Hub, only ever going in search of the VATS as a means to protect his people from the very same mutant threat that faced the player character After being horribly mutated by the FEV, he was effectively banished from any settlement in the wasteland. Just look at how almost every single ghoul in the game is effectively living on the fringes of society. So he decides that he needs to create a world in which he would be accepted in, only to come to terms with the fact that his creation would never live past a single lifetime. And what crushes him in the end isn't what had happened, but rather what would never be: That there would never be a place in the world for him.

It’s nice to see a Fallout character, nay, a villain in general, who isn’t necessarily evil. If anything I see it as easy to see him as a VERY flawed Hero. He committed atrocities for what he saw as the greater good, so he isn’t pure, but that’s just science. How many rats or monkeys die for our vaccines, or even people sometimes? I think that’s my favorite part of Fallout characters…even though I have not played any of the games…and am unqualified to say any of this. Their actions allow the player to decide for themselves if the character is evil or not I see it like this, the Master kidnapped people to turn them into mutants so he could perfect the FEV Virus. He wants to perfect it so he can turn everyone into Mutants and bring humanity under one race because he believes so long as there are differences, there will be conflict. You can understand every bit of his logic, Mutants are objectively better equipped to handle the nuclear hellscape Fallout takes place in…which by the way was caused by War that started over a need for fuel as it quickly dried up, it became a war over differences as each country became madly xenophobic. In a way, the Master is right about that because the conflict over differences is exactly what destroyed the world. Now, eugenics is wrong (obviously) so that would normally be the Master’s biggest flaw in morality, except he still allows Normals and Ghouls to live…just not breed. He won’t commit genocide just to ensure his rule, he lets them live but prohibits breeding Of course, is real biggest flaw is the fact Mutants cannot breed. However, in his moment of downfall he reveals his humanity. The sheer realization of how much horror he’s done in the name of progress and peace, it really shows he always had the best intentions, and had them backed up with science and proof, but the inability to get Mutants to breed the the hole that crumbles his whole plan. He’s gone too far, and he knows it, so he self destructs and tells the Vault Dweller to leave while they still have hope

The ending really got to me. He wanted to save the world, but only ended up making it worse. In his eyes, all his years of hard work trying to do something good for the world has been wasted. He probably knew that killing himself at the end of the conversation would be the only good he could do.

I like that he actually stood by his goal instead of just using it as an excuse to be evil, he didn't want an army of murder monsters to control on a whim he wanted everyone to be changed by the FEV so they could survive the harsh environment, he wanted unity because irreconcilable differences led to the first nuclear war and kept continuing further wars down the line, and when he's made aware of a huge flaw in his plan he doesn't deny it he sincerely regrets what he did and realises all the collateral damage of his plan was in vain

As much as I fear the Master, I feel so bad for him. He thought he was doing the right thing and bettering the lives of humanity as well as those who view him as a ray of light in a dark world. But in reality, he was only worsening the situation and causing more harm than good. The poor guy. 😔

@Flyin' Steve true but fallout 3 was good was it not? I mean think about it had a good story a silent protagonist and it was your decision whether you're a hero or villain, the character is you. Also i excluded fallout new Vegas because it was not made by bethesda. Someone else had it bethesda helped
@demochris17863 жыл бұрын
@Flyin' Steve i disagree with you as i played fallout 3 and it is not bullshit excuse my language, fallout 3 was more than bullshit, it was the first game i played and i had a damn good time with it being the hero of the story and sacrificing myself was the best choice to save the world ( until the game of the year edition came up) and i would play it hundred times.

I kind of wish that the Master's plan came to full fruition. Imagine the Unity at full force, taking on all of the large factions in the universe. IE the BOS, Midwest BOS, Enclave, Institute, Mr. House, and all the others. If the Vault Dweller hadn't intervened, I wonder what would've happened. His idea of the Unity is just so dope to me. Amazing and underrated video game character.

Tbh I think The Master, Caesar and Mr.House are incredible personalities. Fallout 4 just ruined an incredible game, but I'll say fallout never failed to give us some incredible personalities and morale questions. I still can't figure out if House is the best ending for the Mojave, or not. Fallout 3 is not calculated lmao *AMERICA GREAT G DRINK SPARLING WATHA*

People are still questioning who'd be the best choice for NV to this day. Incredible for a game made in under a couple years. Here i am replying to a 3 year old comment. I'll admit the RTS aspect of the earlier games kinda' make it a headache for me (along with 4k displays now lol) but yeah, I'm still rather surprised 4 and 76 went the looter shooter route. Bethesda had some great writing in my teens but F4 was really underwhelming, I've happily replayed NV and 3 a bunch but i can't even drive myself to play most the DLC from my first playthrough of 4. My characters still just chilling in far harbour. Bought the special pipboy edition and was really hyped for a new one too. I love a lot of the design in 4 but the rpg elements really suffered a lot more than i imagined. I was expecting a story better than NV with all the time spent on it.

once again proves how vital writing is to a game. in more modern AAA titles the writing takes a backseat to the gameplay. but it all becomes so stale and derivative after a while. the writing here is excellent, actual literature and combined with the marvelous voice acting it turns this game into art

What i find the most and best writing in this whole ordeal, is that the master himself refinds his own humanity after you manage to convince him, that he himself sees his wrongdoings.

I wrote an expository paper, in English class and we got to choose a topic. I chose the evolution of video games, with the intention of shoehorning in a paragraph about this game, and that p paragraph was two pages long. I could easily write a ten page essay about fallout alone.
