Dedicated to my late older sister. I love you. (This video is not AI, it is solely original Joshua Graham voicelines compiled into a unique speech. More information in pinned comment.)
Joshua Graham is a character I look fondly upon. In the end, he showcases a glimmer of hope in even the most horrific circumstances of being burned alive. There is light in the darkness, we know this to be true. You always have family, and your family always has tribe

This video is made in honor of my late older sister. I dug into the Fallout: New Vegas voice registry & cut, spliced, merged, and mixed Joshua Graham to sound as though he's speaking a single coherent monologue not found in the game back in December. Took 6+ hours to get his voice intonation just right, although there's still inconsistencies. (Edit May 10th 2023: This wasn't made using an AI.) I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. I feel so lost in what I make. EDIT: Thank you all very kindly. I’m glad we all share the admiration of his gentle words presented here. Subscribe for more content, I plan to make more sentimental videos in the future. @@bonk2910 I imagine a life without faith in god would be inherently lonelier. Not to say that it’s wrong or anything. But the idea that god is always with me through all the hardships in life, has always been a comfort. My faith brought me through some of the hardest parts of my life because I felt like I had someone there, alongside me. Maybe it wasn’t true, but it brought and still does bring me comfort in this harsh world. Faith may not be for everyone , but it brings comfort and happiness in a world filled with pain and sorrow.

there you go, thats the point of Joshua. I believe his character is supposed to be a reflection on and a hard counter to the attitude of many "Christians" in America, and the world even. They talk about God's goodness, they pray for those who suffer, but they don't take it upon themselves to let God's goodness pour forth from their own hands. He fights for his home and these people who can't defend themselves. Perhaps he goes too far, and it is up to the player to rein him in, but he is nonetheless a man of action. A man who sees that something needs to be done and does not wait and beg for an invisible hand to do it.

What it means is "And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not" which in my understanding just depends on what bible you read. For example The King James Bible says at John 1:5 "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." while the American standard's interpretation "And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not.

Especially because he isn't purely good. Not just because of his sordid past, but by the time he met the Courier, he was still a very angry man. Even then, he can still direct this immense hatred to some good, even if it ends up corrupting those who follow him. That is, unless he is made to realize that he is simply justifying his actions when he turns to butchery against the White Legs, to wipe them out completely. He states that he was baptised twice, once in water, once in fire, but he was also given a path to redemption twice. First by his fellow mormons, then by a Good Karma, High Speech Courier 6.

I always found it fascinating playing Honest Hearts as an actual skeptic because Joshua and Daniel were both devout in their beliefs but amazingly- the brutal warrior was the one who more accommodating, spiritual and actually showed me WHY someone would want to believe at all. Daniel was preachy while Joshua was a preacher, Daniel quoted sculpture while Joshua acted biblically. Daniel was defensive about his flaws while Joshua wore his scars everyday, Daniel talked about God but Joshua showed me his Mercy.

One must have a capacity or even familiarity with evil to understand and speak against it. Not to support the actions of Joshua before his burning, but there is something more authentic and commanding about a man who has done evil, and suffered for it, asking without commanding for someone he encounters to be good. And something rewarding in saving him from his own potential relapse into evil, if only because we are all of us flawed. Man does not respect the naive or unexperienced, and for good reason. A man who has touched hell has more to speak of in matters of heaven, than one who has never seen or experienced either.

There's so many errors in this grotesque pile of words I'm disgusted to call a paraphrase that I went back to elementary school to make sure that it isn't the teachers that are responsible for this fuck up. Funny interaction in the end cause the gatekeeper of my local school wouldn't let me through because I was too old while ironically he was 64 years old and had the nasty reputation of smelling the girls' hair as they went through. What really caught me about Joshua was how he never spoke with judgment on those who couldn’t defend themselves, he didn’t look at those he was protecting as “weak” he looked at their circumstances and understood why they do not fair well, and why he can help them. A man who struggles with his own personal demons every day, and chooses the hard path and doesn’t run from his sins. That to me is why he doesn’t judge others, because he’s not in denial of his sins, he knows they are a part of him just like everyone else has their own battles with sin.

“In such times we can turn to the Lord… but it’s good to have friends.” I don’t know why, but this line always makes me tear up a little. The sincerity with which he says it really does sound like it comes from a man who has well and truly drowned in loneliness, and then found companions to walk life’s journey with and saw it as so beautiful that it was akin to salvation for him. God is good, yes. But it’s nice to have friends.

Joshua Graham presents a very accurate, though often misunderstood, portrait of christianity. As you'll find in John 14, 15 and 16, the mission of Jesus Christ isn't to say that if you follow him, life will be good and easy. In fact it's the complete opposite, he promises that life will be difficult, even more so if you take up your cross and follow him. But what he does promise is meaning, it's the light in the darkness, it's the hope that not a single moment of suffering, of your suffering, will be in vain... Without that hope, life becomes mere luck of the draw. If it goes well, carry on, if it goes badly, yield. Thing is, none of us ever want to yield, and when our loved ones do they take a piece of our soul with them. But if life is suffering and if there's no ultimate meaning to any of it, why continue to exist? If you are suffering so much, and the end goal is the same either way, why not just pack it in and go gentle into that good night? The suffering of the world is what leads most people to abandon God, and in that you're certainly not alone. But a world without God isn't a world without suffering, it's just a world where suffering doesn't matter.

Religion in the end teaches us harmony as everything around is the creation of the omnipotent being or beings. Even if we dont believe in their existence its just comfy to know that you are existing and connected to everything around you, and it includes all the good things even if they are sunk in the depths of the bad ones. This mindset can exist without dogmas and names and even without realizition of one who follows it.

I've been listening to this video for over a year now, back then I was depressed thinking I wasn't going anywhere in life. I relapsed and decided to just push to be happier, and it worked. Now, a year later, I'm 31, fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I watched my parents both cry and breakdown, my sister calling me her baby brother and asking why she had to watch me suffer, as well as many friends grieving for me. I was close to death since it had spread to my liver and there were severe lesions and whatnot. However...I made it. Its been almost 7 months, I finish my last 2 chemo treatments, and the tumor that killed my pancreas which was 7 cm, the size of a peach, has now been reduced to scar tissue. When my oncologist told me, her and her staff said I was one of the toughest most humble patients they ever treated, and that I would be able to live a nice long comfortable life, even though I can never work again. My coworkers and boss have been constantly checking on me...even as far as raising almost 1k just for me to have. I cried and felt so loved and appreciated not just for my hard work, but for the kindness I gave to everyone. I'm still battling depression, and my mom has watched and heard me cry asking why did this have to happen. She reminded me that I survived, that I can help others fight who didn't get to have others to support them like what I had. And that's what I wanna do with my life. I wanna be a shoulder and strength for those who have no one who are fighting chronic illnesses like me. No one should have to fight alone, ever. Hearing Graham say "The fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me" reminds me of how hard I've been fighting without even realizing it. I beat one of the deadliest cancers, and now, as my mother has reminded me, my life is meant for a new path. I hope that when you read this, that you do not feel sorry for me, but that you find the strength deep within you to keep fighting, no matter how dark it gets, that you will find the light, and if not, I will come to you with fire to help illuminate the way with you, and I will call you my friend. This world is very cruel, but it doesn't mean we have to give in to its cruelty. You are stronger than that, and I believe in you. -Matthew

I’m a Mormon myself, and oftentimes I see us depicted inaccurately in media, and frankly that’s fine. But Joshua…jeez, man. I remember running into him in Vegas, and I don’t think I’ve ever met a character I can emphasize more with. So much of what he says I believe and is apart of my life, and everything about him seems so…I don’t know, heart touching? This is a character that isn’t real and has never existed, and yet I feel bad for him, admire him, understand him. In a lot of ways Joshua is who I hope to become, really. Someone who’s made mistakes and knows that, and is trying to repent for them. And yet at the same time doesn’t crush themselves with self doubt or hatred, that loves others and knows they love him. He even has the compassion to care for his enemies; I remember finding out that if you tell Joshua you’ll harm the Dead Horses, he first threatens you, but finishes with a warning about how murdering good people is bad for the soul, and how it’s the most important reason why you shouldn’t. It sounds awesome, but if you think about it, isn’t that some kind of compassion? By telling you it’s the most important reason, he sets aside his own threat and appreciation for the Dead Horses, and instead thinks about YOU. He doesn’t want you to harm yourself. Maybe he doesn’t want you to make the same mistakes he did when he helped Caesar.

Those who seek the Lord will find him. I've done what you did many times, and when I've really needed it, what I've opened up to has been so on point, that it was essentially a two way conversation, much like how bumblebee (in transformers) takes audio clips to form his responses. With 31,000 verses in the Bible, opening up to the one that is the inspiration for this video could just be a coincidence. But I prefer to call such things divine winks. 😉

I picture Joshua seeing you sitting there, broken, lost, and heartbroken, lost in a moment of darkness, and deep within his searing, tortured body, his heart throbs with sympathy. He just comes to sit next to you, his Bible in his hand, and starts saying this. Maybe, as much as it agonizes him to do so, he puts his other bandaged hand on your shoulder to give it a reassuring squeeze. Finally, knowing he has said what he can, he stands up, gripping his cherished bible, and with a parting "God be with you" he leaves to attend to other things.

Dont grieve, as your brother will be sad when be sees you like that but rather continue to do good deeds, to help this world. One more thing, if he is in better place, why go feel sad? One that taught me how many, people and animals alike, are desperate for affection. A dog whose euthanasia caused me to cry like a child thirteen times in one day. I loved my dog. When I think back on him, I feel pain. I cannot imagine his face without pain. I imagine you feel the same. Hold on to the pain. But don't let it define you. Allow your heart to feel joy. That's how you know characters have depth and purpose in their actions. It is sad to see games like Outer Worlds throw it back in our faces. I stopped playing the game after I took the priest on his vision quest, only for him to leave with no answers and for everything in his life to still be a charade. When you pigeonhole characters into positions where they never change, and gain no convictions or do not build a foundation for existing convictions...they feel empty. It is a shame they don't make games like they used to.

A couple years ago, April 30th, 2022, my stepfather suddenly passed away at three in the morning from a heart attack. A couple weeks went by, and while I was in my VoTech class (as this was still during high school when my stepdad had passed), I found this video in my recommended feed while I was looking for music to listen to while I worked. By the time the video ended when I first watched, I was on the verge of tears because of how close to home that it really hit. A couple of days ago...and now, at the time I'm writing up this comment in hopes KZbin doesn't take it down (May 13th, 2024), I realize that Joshua reminds me a lot of my stepdad, which is probably why I connect with Joshua so positively. In fact...sometimes when I listen to this video, out of the number of times I have since I found this video, I don't necessarily hear just Joshua Graham talking...sometimes I hear my stepdad saying all of these things to me, through Joshua's voice. So...for you, the creator of this video...thank you. And I wish you the best, wherever you may be right now. To everyone else...be there for your loved ones. Tell them you love them. Cherish the moments you have with them. Because you never know when they can be taken away from you. Much love.

Time flied I began to realize things and I lost hope, in the face of fear I built hatred, I told myself that no one is there to help me, and no one will feel sorry for me. But then I prayed, I asked for his guidance and he helped me, God helped me. Its a long Quarantine being alone but I survived, Thank God. I made it to my friends the friends who left me, I wanted to get my revenge but I know God would not like it, maybe he did it for me so I embraced it. Thing is, that sort of thing is what the fourth commandment really covers. The problem is, those real-life preachers use fear to guide their followers, not love or anything they purport God to truly be about. And, also, you're not allowed to question them. Meanwhile, it's clear that Joshua is more interested in helping your relationship with God, rather than using God's name to inflate his own ego or gain power. He also never raises his voice at you or derides you for having questions or denying his faith. Never once does he condescend you, even when you choose the nasty dialogue options. Unfortunately, in modern days, a lot of people take God's name in vain that way because they don't know any better, because it's what they were brought up with. There are still people out there who know better, but it's hard to find. "There are many who do not know the truth because they know not where to find it." I'm not trying to push religion on you or anything, but that's my take.
@HotTaiCurry
@HotTaiCurry 3 жыл бұрын
I feel like that is why it hits. In this world, its hard to find somebody who has a combination of charisma and genuine intention of belief to feel truth behind his words instead of malice. It is hard to find somebody that is charismatic that doesn't use it for malice and hard to find somebody with genuine unfaltering belief in something that can communicate that passion to somebody else without feeling alienating. The person that has both of those traits is "practically" fictional due to their unnatural scarcity. I won't lie, I have charisma. I know me saying it makes me seem like an arrogant asshole, but that is kinda the point. Everyone has some type of charisma, but only the people with top tier charisma can really pull off that feat. I do not have the type that lets me say "you are gonna like me!" to your face and somehow fall in love with my arrogance, but the type that can subtly shift the room or at least what is around me to feel very positive and welcoming without ever being the center of all attention. I can say without a shadow of a doubt I have used my charisma for malicious and mischievous things just as much as I have for good things. It is the principle of a man able have the power to mold hearts and lead people en masse and also not use that power for something they know is bad even if that bad has immense benefit that is truly immaculate to me. Joshua knows he can never wipe away the sins he has committed, such is the reason his baptism does not absolve him but instead sets him on the path of redemption, a point many religious people never point out. Baptism is never meant to allow you to commit infinite atrocity and never be in trouble, baptism is meant to be you turning over a new leaf as if being reborn into life as a form of a road to redemption, but your past deeds will remain on record for as long as history continues.

@@josephsshitpostemporium4325 Actually, it depends, I may be lucky, but except once time, in my experience, Christians are very open to talking about it and being questioned without losing their peace. I think they enjoy it, it's just that like any group or idea, people's maturity plays an important role. I have known atheists like me, completely arrogant and intolerant, and who enjoy provoking the religious with "scientific" arguments that they do not even understand, and even so they proclaim themselves people of "Science" (as if it were something to which they belong or Christians deny it), and who act like jerks when the other person counteracts them and exposes them as ignorant that they really are (In fact, to study theology you must also take and pass science).

Science has ruled out to alot of people that a being like God can't exist to most people when this "magic" does exist and it's hard to believe this type of stuff when you're told by everyone in your life and in books that there's no way a God can exist. I asked for answers and he gave them to me when I gave in. That's what I mean it's more than just a coping mechanism cuz it's very real even I can't give you a Google source or go back and time and show you the stuff happening. If you'd like I'd love to tell you more cuz as a Christan it's my duty to help you learn but not force you which is how it's supposed to be not forcing people into it like with slavery.

I was raised by an extremely anti-religion father. He hated Christianity entirely because of his childhood spent attending a Catholic school, on top of resenting my grandfather for very petty reasons along with his religious beliefs. He was also a horribly abusive narcissist who always had a front of being a funny approachable guy, but in reality was a horribly violent and angry drunk who saw his children as money leeches. Having moved away from him and the rest of my toxic family, I feel lost and scared knowing that my entire childhood was spent wasting away trying to appease a man that couldn't ever be happy with anything I did to please him. It's left me feeling resentful and angry with myself, that 2 decades of my life are gone. While Fallout New Vegas was a game I played and didn't pay much attention to, Joshua Graham was always something that stood out to me. He was a man of such power and presence, yet never felt like a threat to me when I tried out Honest Hearts. Bandaged up like a mummy SWAT officer, I expected him to be a somewhat violent person. And while he can be, he never lets that side of him control him. In every interaction with the player, he seemed to always be as respectful and welcoming as I'd imagine most Mormons were. And when I discovered that he was a Mormon when I was still living with my abusive father, it caused a great deal of confusion within me. I had always been told that "Religion is evil and exists only to start wars! Christians are bigoted monsters!". But here was a man, in a game set in a post-apocalyptic Nevada with all manner of monsters and savages, respectfully explaining himself and his beliefs while inspecting and cleaning a pile of 1911's, sharing with me his words of faith and wisdom, and treating me as an equal when I only just met him. I've been away from my family for about a year now, and while I don't regret leaving them behind, I do feel lost knowing that I don't have my family with me anymore. But with the help of the close friends I've made in my life, along with the heartwarming stories that others have shared here, I do feel that I am on the right path to a better future. And without the presence of my family, I've found myself feeling comfort from the teachings of Christianity, especially the teachings shared by Joshua Graham. He has been a figure of redemption and second chances in my eyes, and I truly am grateful to Obsidian for creating a character that is a true symbol of light and safety in a franchise known for being a horrifying wasteland. So thank you, Joshua Graham. May God be with you as well.

My father was the same and the opposite, he was a nacassitic, abusive pastor. But unlike my siblings, somehow I knew how he was didn't negate God. For whatever reason, I always knew God existed, and he was good. Even so, I hated my parents for what they had done, and by 12, I was certain that I would move out and never look back as soon as possible. Despite stellar entrance exams that netted me a full scholarship, I was home schooled, academically neglected, socially awkward, emotionally broken, and not in particularly good health. I got hooked on alcohol at my first exposure, and promptly flunked out. Eventually, I managed to go back, and finish my degree. My dream was to understand how to help others be better parents, and help people heal from bad parenting. I graduated with a degree in psychology. I was not able to get a job with it. Yet again, it seemed I had no idea what I was doing in life. My health was worsening. The girl I loved pointed out I wasn't even better than the people who had hurt me, and I saw she was right. I saw no hope or reason to continue fighting; I wrote my goodbyes, pulled out my .45, and shot myself in the chest. As the blood filled my lungs, everything else in the world faded into nothingness. I wasn't unconscious, it was just suddenly like nobody and nothing else mattered. It was just me, and this presence I had always known. I was terrified. What had I accomplished in life? Nothing. And who was I? A pretty shitty person. I wasn't ready to meet my maker. "What do I know? What do I know? What do I know?" the question rang desperately in my head. "God, I know you're real, and Jesus died for my sins, and if this, right now, is the only good thing I've ever done.. I know that's enough. I'm ready to see you." As dumb and clichéd as that may sound, I immediately felt something come over me like I've never felt before or since. Total peace. Love. Forgiveness. Not just for me, but for everyone.. For the first time, I felt love for my dad, not a hint of bitterness. For the first time, I actually felt like I myself was loved. Obviously, I survived that day. I could say a lot more, but this is already a book. The presence I met then speaks in many different ways, but I definitely hear him in this video. Every time I feel down, I play this message and feel comfort. I'm glad I'm not the only one. If anyone needs a friend or to talk about tough things, please add me on Facebook. Jesse Gunn. We don't have to be alone, and there are people who care.

In places where the church holds much power over people’s lives, it begins to attract those who seek that power, rather than those who seek to spread wisdom, love, and tolerance. Tolerance is an often forgotten tenet of Christianity, and of numerous other religions. Yet it is one of the most important teachings of Jesus. We cannot control others’ beliefs, and we should never strive to. It is not our business to impose upon others our way of life, but rather to simply live as we feel is right, in our own eyes and the eyes of God. I find it difficult to believe that a being of infinite power and the combined wisdom of the universe would send his people to suffer for such petty things as not going to church, being skeptical of its existence, or anything else the preacher on the side of the road might have told you shall earn you everlasting torment. God’s mercy is everlasting. If asked for forgiveness, it shall give it. And if someone refuses to ask for it, then perhaps it is us who should ask in their stead.

Spoiler warning: As someone who found God through pain and despair, Honest Hearts broke me. The ending especially. My first time playing it, I chose to fight rather than flee, but convinced Joshua to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds. I related so much to how Daniel wanted to preserve the Sorrows' innocence. I was robbed of mine and wanted nothing more than to mentor the younger generation to find peace amongst themselves. However, I too grew up in a world where fighting was the only way to ensure that others would stop taking from you and threatening you. It made me lose my faith, but after all the fighting, I experienced incomprehensible miracles. I felt the warmth and love of the creator. It purged me like fire. Ironically, I believe it's what will save me from the fire come judgement. Now I tell all those that seek my advice to have a warrior spirit, but a heart of gold. God isn't fake just because some magical force doesn't reach down and solve all of our problems and prevent tragedy. It's our responsibility to use what God gave us to make the world a better place. So, my brothers and sisters, there is much work to be done.
