This is the first tutorial in a series about false cord distortion. This video is intended for people who can't find or haven't yet found their false vocal folds. The video will walk you through some basic anatomy and will guide you through an exercise to locate your false cords.
If you'd like a lesson please visit my website www.aliki.katriou.com :)
If you'd like to sign up to my ACCs: landing.mailerlite.com/webfor...
I'm a metal singer and singing teacher. I specialize in distortions - what people would call false cord, vocal fry, screaming, growling, grunting, grit, rasp, yelling. Basically, vocal texture!

If you've already watched the video and are just coming back to practice, here are the sample exercises only! 4:00 -- Clearing your throat, tongue out 6:03 -- Sing all 5 basic vowels with tongue out, from "normal" to throat clear to false cords on each sound. a-a, e-e, etc. 6:52 -- Smooth transition from your best vowel to your worst. 7:17 -- String all vowels together Don't allow your false cords to remain engaged for more than 3 seconds without resting them.

For anyone struggling with the same thing, which kept me back for a year: By "clearing your throat", the video seems to refer to the lowest possible / initial part when you really intensely clear your throat. When I "clear my throat", I do so at various points and when doing it thoroughly or "hard", I move upwards from low in the throat until right behind the mouth. I think my standard "throat clearing", no matter of intensity, is with the epiglottis. What helped me was looking at an anatomy chart to differentiate the two.

Yes!!!! I hear so much epiglottis from people! When I first tried it, I just went into a breath distortion with some erratic epiglottic movement and I kept complaining about it and everyone kept telling me that I'm doing false folds... I went to a laryngologist and got a scope to prove I wasn't moving my false vocal folds and then I reached out to Alexander Glenfield who does Mongolian throat singing for help :)

After watching this, I’ve realized I’ve been using my epiglottis for my “false chord” vocals and I just didn’t know. After activating my false chords and trying a high, it actually worked. I’m so happy to have this information. I have to teach myself all over again but it will be worth it. Thank you so much for this 🖤

This is more common than people think - loads of people use either the epiglottis or arytenoids instead of the false vocal folds. I attribute a small part of this to the broad advise of "it shouldn't hurt" - it makes people more likely to aim for higher anatomical structures that are lighter to vibrate :)
@BlommaBaumbart
@BlommaBaumbart Жыл бұрын
@@AlikiKatriou Should I feel anything while doing it? I heard conflicting statements from singers, namely "you cannot feel your false folds vibrate" and "try until you feel the vibration". When I'm currently trying it, I feel a sort of rolling sensation down in my throat.

Bless you. Everybody who speaks about distortion always tells you to use your false cords, but they never tell us where they are or seem to know where. Like I know they’re supposed to be on top of the vocal cords, but how exactly do you find them inside of you in order to use them? Just the fact that you’re tackling this subject makes you worthy of a like and a subscription.

Hey, just wanted to say that this method, pretty extreme on the first glance, turned out to be really effective! I spent few hours trying to produce similar sound, it was harder because I've tried this so many times with all kinds of sounds. Lil bit painful, because I was pushing too hard. But in the end, yay, it worked, no pain(despite slight dry feeling in throat-nose area). I can go in and out without squeezing! Also, I can't tell if you're a brilliant actor, or you're just the way you act in videos, but I absolutely love it! So much positive energy and so many smiles! You have a truly bright personality.

This was a really good way of explaining the what, where and how on false chords. I've been trying to do false chord screams for a while now and it's been hard. Being able to feel where the false chords are and when they activate was a really good sign for me that i was doing it right. When i did this before it kinda hurt so i assumed i was doing something wrong, so it's nice to know that i'm on the right track and just have to practice (carefully ofc). Great video

probably using too much throat. when you do this exaggerated cough, you feel your diaphragm kicking your entire chest upwards. you will have the most powerful breath and sound using that exact feeling. Tall '0' mouth, tongue down. When you realize the distinct difference between using your delicate throat over your diaphragm is when a lot of the breakthroughs happen. If you're trying to growl, you don't really use that much of like... your own voice? It's kinda just a phenomenon caused by the shape of your mouth and the hefty supply of air youre able to push out with your diaphragm. Rather, you use the hollow sound of a sigh amplified by an open throat and a strong diaphragm! dont tighten up in the neck.

In fact, since you use those exact words, if a teacher is doing it exactly right, you're bound either fall in love with them or wish to become like them. Thank you :) If you're playing around with the tongue being extended in order to address the tongue root as well, I might suggest placing the tip of the tongue behind the lower teeth to stabilize the tongue and pushing the middle of the tongue outside (so the tongue is almost forming a "reverse" 'C' shape). This can stretch the root a bit further...

Your movements and how you act remind me of a boyinaband a lot. Interesting, you are so alike to me. BTW should've watched the video from the beginning. I'm not singing, just interested in it and wanted to know how to growl and couldn't figure it out by myself, your video helped a lot (I do know that nothing should be stressed or hurt, that's how I make sure to not to damage anything in the throat accidentally). 5:08 Oh, hey, that's Russian vowels

LMAOOOO I'm pretty okay with false cord but I was NOT expecting the crazy larynx side to side thing and I did go and look in the mirror and OMG WHAAAAT!!! XD That's crazy!! I can't get that aeiou thing sounding quite so clean and throat-singy though, I naturally end up with some grumbly gritty tones. I think I originally learned false cord coming more from the direction you said not to hahahaha "imagine being a dog" advice by Angela Gossow lol... But I can do aeiou and transition between them with the grittier tone... Hope that's not too naughty of me! ^_^; Eeheehee I love your presentation style, gimme a bit of sugar overdose and that's me 100% XD

Got a bit carried away haha, messing with pitch and overtones as well lol, my poor Snapchat peeps just got the weirdest spam ehehehe! Wow, apart from Western overtone singing, I wasn't making any progress with throat singy type stuff. It's finally clicking, yay, thank you so much :D Been trying to get my head around throat singing for a while since seeing these clips kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3-phHVqhdOJhqs & kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5m2dn6uhs-Cprs but everyone's so bad at explaining lol. @@DestroyerMariko Yes, it can be rougher than the typical way that metalheads use their false folds but, in the end, it gives you more control and better breath management so it's worth the effort to go this route. There are some great people who teach overtone singing and throat singing but it's difficult to find good information online.
@DestroyerMariko
@DestroyerMariko 4 жыл бұрын
I think possibly this also has answered my previous question about my false chord + grit thing I commented on the other video actually! Maybe what I've been doing has more of this type of control in it? I did notice when I was playing with the lower throat singy sound, it was easier to get into it from my low gritty growl first before cleaning it up. Coz yeah like you're saying, I do feel like that gritty growl gives me more control and breath management compared to my "pure" false cord growl. That's so awesome, definitely gonna work harder at mastering it, so frustrating when you wanna write vocals but don't have enough breath to deliver it the right way haha, glad I seem to be on the right track! ^_^ I know you don't wanna be "a KZbinr" but eeee more peeps need to know about your channel! This stuff's so helpful already!

Your videos are amazing! I think I finally figured out how to get the throat singing but I'm not sure. It's way more relaxed than I thought and almost feels like when I'm adding vocal fry to a clean note. I start on a clean "ee" and think backward and then the buzzing comes on. Is this what it's supposed to feel like? What's the difference between adding fry to a clean note and throat singing? And is it possible to active false cords and fry at the same time?
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 жыл бұрын
Oooo, ok, one by one. Vocal fry is a vibratory pattern on the vocal folds and the vocal folds can only perform 1 vibratory pattern at a time. Therefore, it is unlikely any human being will be adding fry to a clean tone. Vocal fry happens directly on the vocal folds and it feels effortless and relaxed. False fold vibration happens on your second set of vocal folds. So you'll have 2 vibrations happening at the same time: your true vocal folds & the false vocal folds. So, make sure you are maintaining a stable volume on your true vocal folds to prevent them from dipping into vocal fry. Yes, it is possible to do false fold and vocal fry at the same time. 8/10 online videos of people demonstrating "fry" distortions are actually demonstrations of a fry + false fold combo distortion :) Hope that answers everything ^^
@julii.screams
@julii.screams 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. Finally someone on youtube who knows what they're talking about!! That makes absolute sense!! Besides false cord screaming I've also been trying to learn how to sing with grit. I heard a lot of "add vocal fry on top of a clean note" and it never made sense to me how my vocal folds are supposed to do two things at once. So that distortion must be coming from somewhere else as well... 🤔 Looking forward to more videos, this channel is amazing & thank you for everything you do for us.
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 жыл бұрын
@@julii.screams Yes! Depending on the type of distortion you're hearing added on to a clean tone, it could be light false fold, ary-epiglottic, arytenoid, breathiness and sometimes it can be the vocal folds changing vibratory pattern quickly from vocal fry to falsetto typically but this wouldn't be a perfectly sustained distorted tone. (I feel the need to mention though that very often singers will sing phrases, words etc with no distortion and many people mishear them and think there is distortion)

Hi! I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this but I'm asking anyway! Do you think that smoking regularly has an adverse effect on a person's ability to perform this style of vocals? I'm a 22yo male and I generally find it quite difficult to attempt techniques like this, or vocal fry. Cheers!
@AlikiKatriou
@AlikiKatriou 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! The boring, standard answer is yes. The issue with smoking (any substance) is that you have to inhale it, which means it physically has to pass/make contact with your vocal folds. This causes inflammation and can affect agility. If you consistently irritate the vocal folds they start to remain inflamed because the body anticipates the presence of the irritant. So, in an ideal universe, it would be best not to smoke at all. That being said, smoking can be very addictive and quitting can be difficult, so it isn't always as easy as just realising it's bad for you and deciding to quit. If you are really addicted, just try to slowly minimise over time and make sure to let any singing teachers/coaches you're working with know that you smoke etc. It's part of your reality and therefore needs to be acknowledged. If you can quit, you're awesome XD
