False Pagan Religions: Animism, Hinduism, and Buddhism - Apologetics Series - Episode 38

On today’s episode of the SSPX Podcast, we’ll start our last batch of episodes - those dealing with the “why not” questions about what is reasonable to believe. Today we’ll be looking at the basic premise of Paganism - why Polytheism, animism, spiritualism, even if they have been at times very popular in history, and seem to be trendy now, simply don’t make sense to the reasonable person. We’ll see how, based on logic, the ideas inherent in Hinduism, Buddhism, and native or aboriginal spiritualities simply won’t match up to reality.
You can find notes to all these episodes at sspxpodcast.com/apologetics, as well as all our previous episodes. There as well, you can find a link to help support this project. This is free to listen to, as well as all the resources we’re posting, but if you can help with a one time or a small monthly recurring donation, you’ll be making sure that we can continue this work of producing good Catholic content on a regular basis.

+JMJ+ This was one of the clearest and must accurate contrasts of Catholicism with Buddhism thatb I've ever seen (I'd lapsed into Buddhism before reversion). Prominent Buddhists would say that the assessment is accurate. The best part was the prescription of Catholicism

The explanation of Buddhism/Hinduism given here is very specific. The reality is murkier than that. Buddhism has some adherents who are also Hindus. Some treat it merely as a way of thinking/or social mindset about their variety of Hinduism. Many believe in several gods, including Buddha. Others believe in several gods, with Siddhartha being merely a prophet or a holy man. Sikhs in some localities, treat Buddha with reverence as a reincarnation of a holy guru. Then, there are those who combined with Japanese Shinto, which is a whole, long historical/political fight. Now groups of Japanese have a combo of both that they consider to be their religion.

In Turkey I felt a terrible uneasiness outside the Sultanahmet mosque (across from Hagia Sophia) and ultimately decided not to enter it. However, there's still enough Catholicity in the architecture of Hagia Sophia (despite being converted into a mosque), that a Catholic tourist would find peace in that structure. In Japan, the Buddhist temples I visited for artistic pleasure were eerie in that they use the same incense you'd find in a Catholic church. One temple even had almost the same pews of my home parish, which was SUPER weird. The Shinto Temples I visited are absolutely beautiful from the exterior, but the interiors were so creepy to me because they were extremely underlit and moody, with a LOT of fetish items / paraphernalia, compared to the organized decoration in Catholic church interiors.

Not a very accurate representation of hinduism . It is always misrepresented - mainly because it is so vast and it is hard for many people to grasp . Vishishta advaita and dvaita are hindu philosophies where brahman and atman are separate. And life on earth itself isn't torment , but life on earth without devotion and faith and only focus on gifts and materialistic goods is torment . You can live a fulfilling familial life on earth with renounciation not of action but of the fruit of action. Recommend anyone curious to look into this using the srimad bhagavatam - a hindu text which is parallel in a way to the bible (more than the gita which is one conversation). The bhagavatam has the story of creation , god's attributes and forms , devotees , messages from god , apocalypses etc. where a parallel can be drawn to the bible. The main differentiator of hinduism is that we believe that there are different paths to god - as long as they are done with devotion they are acceptable (they have to be pure or sattvic in nature not evil or tamasic) . And lastly I would like to conclude by saying hinduism in its root is monotheistic . One true form - brahman or parabrahma . Each attribute of God manifests as an incarnation.

In my humble opinion, I would not say that Buddhism rejects revelation per se, because as father stated correctly, Buddhism founded by 500 bc, that's before Christ, Buddhism is kinda "pelagianism", the 4th noble truth teaches ways to curb the desires to escape wheel of suffering , more like commandments of Moses, so I reckon if Buddha was to meet Jesus, he would follow Jesus definitely. We just have to bring "revelation" to them, like Paul in Roman 1 or Acts 17. God bless

Well Buddhism is an ancient religion with millions of followers and a very strong belief system which predates Christianity. That some of your friends have chosen to follow the path of Buddhism is a personal one, just as your Christian path is. It doesn't seem like you show much respect or tolerance for others' beliefs which don't align with your own. A world of religious tolerance and peace is one we need to aim for, not sectarianism.

It is pronounced: 'vayda' not: 'veeda' The Vedas were brought to India by the Aryans. What is today called "Hinduism" (accurate name: Sanatana Dharma [The Eternal Religion] ) developed out of the Vedic 'religion' receiving some admixture from Dravidian folk religions. The Vedas today serve (among other things) as the purity test of what might be considered 'orthodox' Hinduism: if a writing or thought does not comport with the Veda's, it is probably not an orthodox Hindu dogma or practice.

This passage against paganism is one of the most beautiful passages in Scripture. All pagans should read. But all men are vain, in whom there is not the knowledge of God: and who by these good things that are seen, could not understand him that is, neither by attending to the works have acknowledged who was the workman: But have imagined either the fire, or the wind, or the swift air, or the circle of the stars, or the great water, or the sun and moon, to be the gods that rule the world. With whose beauty, if they, being delighted, took them to be gods: let them know how much the Lord of them is more beautiful than they: for the first author of beauty made all those things. Or if they admired their power and their effects, let them understand by them, that he that made them, is mightier than they: For by the greatness of the beauty, and of the creature, the creator of them may be seen, so as to be known thereby. (Wisdom 13 1-5)

@alfgand8040 - Only problem is, modern pagans don't believe any of those warnings apply to them. They believe they're enlightened, uncommonly wise, and that we're the fools. If only they knew what awaits them. Pray for conversions! If the former satanist high wizard Zachary King could swim the Tiber, so can these lost souls.

@@miguelatkinson See, we have the experience of exorcists over hundreds of years who inform us that satan always presents himself as a beautiful, luminous being who will grant your every wish. Only later does satan reveal himself. While certainly not all pagans are possessed, you are leaving yourselves open to that condition because the "gods" and idols you worship are only representations of satan. Think I'll skip that part, thank you.

Re: SSPX I always sort of shrink when I hear that society speaking like there are two levels in Catholicism... Their level as being superior and holy (better dressed) and (better postures), and the Holy Catholic Church as being sort of irreverent... At 78, I lived through the Latin Mass, and came out of the Mass not having understood much in that language. I still love to reminisce about those good old days, but since Mother Church is a good mother; she decided that each faithful would be better served hearing the Mass in their own language...I immediately cheered that decision indeed. Please don*t tell me that back in those days that I was receiving Holy Communion in a more reverent way, as one grows in the love of receiving the Body, Blood Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ps One should not even notice if others are receiving on the tongue or in the hand if one is concentrated on who one receives.

The concept of creator God developed from time to time, and the definitions of creator God can't make a creator God. The concept of creator God is illogical, selfish, and childish. The universe is mathematical, and I made an equation to prove the origin of the universe. It is explained in a book called verifying the origin of everything binary mathematical physics and Buddhism. It explains the origin of quantum objects and observers.

A majority of what scientists push is based on nothing more than theory and speculation based on flawed computer models. Sometimes they are right, not always. They are also the ones who would have us believe that there is no such thing as evil, because as is their argument against God, they consider it a human creation.
