this video is a little bit different than my normal ones because it isn't ha ha funny falsettos but shows a little bit more of the serious side to this musical. i decided not to over-edit this video in order to preserve the seriousness. if this makes you too sad go watch my other videos (that's what i'm doing)

marvin’s double “i never wanted to love you” hurts so much, especially to me as a member of the repressed gay community. he never wanted to love trina, he didn’t want to love women. he was made to love women. and he just as equally didn’t want to love whizzer, someone who he was forbidden to love during his time period. he was stuck in the middle, and no matter how much of a jerk he was to begin with, that’s pain that many people dont get over.
@free_siobhan
@free_siobhan 5 жыл бұрын
I feel like it also shows how Marvin is so obsessed with being right in the beginning that he says this to Trina to I guess make her feel worse? But honestly your interpretation makes a lot more sense and also adds to the emotion. Either way, William Finn is a lyrical genius and should have his own holiday.

Trina never hated Whizzer, she hated how Happy Marvin was with someone that wasn’t her especially seeing how miserable she and him were together. She didn’t know how to vent that frustration and that’s where her pain comes from. She’s one of the most complex characters in the show and oh my god SJB is so talented too.

DonnaRink ASMR i agree, it’s more than just that. whizzer knows he’s sick, is admitting to marvin that he had other partners, is afraid for marvin, doesn’t want to leave the man he loves alone, feels guilty for leaving marvin. that line just has so much weight.

@alildaisy2180
@alildaisy2180 2 жыл бұрын
As someone who’s been through some similar shit, it breaks me everytime too. In that moment, Jason must have realized so much. How much he loved his mom and wanted to protect her, but the most painful part is this: what happened has happened. There’s no taking that slap back, there’s no stopping Marvin from doing it, and all the hate he had for Marvin before it and after it doesn’t make a _drop_ of difference. He can’t change his dad, he can’t hit him back, he can’t make Trina, Mendel, Marvin, and Whizzed happy. The discourse will continue no matter what he does, so there is nothing left. The only thing that is left is disbelief, and the sound of Trina crying.

I feel like Marvin’s tiny scared “what” at 6:41 is very unnoticed and it’s a really huge and sad moment displayed so minimally. I’m assuming it’s when he either learned what could be wrong, or at least that whizzer would have to stay in the hospital for a while, and either way it’s really sad.

the sad knowledge that trina FELL IN LOVE with Marvin,, then he broke her heart,, then she found a family in the disfunction,, only to have it to be torn to pieces by hiv,, (because not only did whizzer die to it,, marvin will too,, and he STILL IS THE MAN TRINA LOVES) -not saying she doesn't love mendel,, it's just that you don't fall out of love with someone,, u CAN move on,, but the love is ALWAYS there- i say this because the pain SHE went through is often overlooked or simplified..
@maxaustin3377
@maxaustin3377 4 жыл бұрын
gracenoelle idk why that pain would be simplified. even if she wasn’t in love with marvin, she married him in the 60s and then found out he’d never been hers even when she thought he was and unlike him (who always knew he was gay) she was totally blindsided and just found out her marriage had been a lie the whole time. and in the 70s she really had no other option than to marry the first man who showed any interest in her bc she was a single stay at home mother with a kid 😢

@emeraldraburn5987 5 жыл бұрын
You need to take into consideration though that Marvin probably had it to during the end. And little Jason went from having three dads to eventually only having one, because damn it if Whizzer wasn't apart of their family, damn it if Tina didn't love him at least a little bit; Because those were her boys. And when he died, Marvin went shortly after. And suddenly their family was growing smaller.

Sophia Lisa he was the only one who didn’t cheat and steal like all the other men around him who would tell him not to and then go do it themselves. He needed a good example, that it’s possible to live a amazing life without those things. and what sucks is that whizzer didn’t deserve what he got, and now Jason will not only be lacking of a good role model, but wonder if that’s not the way to live cause look what happened.

I saw a local production shortly after seeing the broadcast of this and it really made me doubly appreciate how rich and nuanced these roles are and how difficult it is to do them justice. Also after Marvin tells him “anything you do is alright, yes it’s alright. Yes it is.” (Possibly referring to the person he slept with to contract AIDS before he slept with Marvin) Whizzer says “no it’s not.” He feels guilty. On and unrelated note I’m actually bawling.

I’m so sorry, I know this is supposed to sad and heartbreaking but at 3:23 Trina is having her little sweet ending and then someone’s just making high squeaky noises for March of the Falsettos and you see them just climbing over the blocks and it’s too much for me.

OKAY I'm late but I'm so glad you included Trina's song because it's SO underappreciated. I could talk about it for days. The men in this show all have ongoing themes about life being a game (see The Chess Game esp for this), but Trina's RIGHT, life isn't a game. It really emphasises how obsessed they all are with their own lives and completely don't realise the impact their actions have??? Trina's given up her whole life to the men around her (Marrying Marvin? Her father's idea. Getting divorced? Marvin. it goes on) and she's just TIRED of them not respecting that. SORRY I could go off about this song for days. I'm kinda mad March of the Falsettos is straight after. I know it's important symbolically, but I feel like it's weirdness takes away from the impact of this song and how good it is??

8:06 I always start broken-sobbing when Charlotte says “something bad is happening” and Christian, without having any lines, manages to convey SO MUCH in response. His face and slight shrug says “yeah, no shit, something awful is happening to the love of my life, please, how do we fix it??” and then Charlotte delivers the final blow 😭😭😭

To make you all sadder, I have a theory of the end of the musical. Obviously Marvin has HIV, I’m not sure if it’s canon but it’s implied during the show and most people assume he does. So, Marvin dies. Remember, Trina still loves him even though she’s married to Mendel, she needed a husband to help raise Jason and Mendel seemed like her best option at the time. Since she lost the man she truly loves I go with the theory that she committed because she was already shown to be mentally unstable. So, now we have Mendel, Jason, Charlotte, and Cordelia. This is when my theories begin. Mendel truly loves Trina, but I don’t think he would commit. My theory is he quits his career after becoming severely depressed and possibly a substance abuser. Jason also develops depression after losing his mother and three father figures (Whizzer and Marvin to HIV, Mendel to his substance abuse). This is where the lesbians from next door come in. Even though they lost their friends, they’ll most likely come out just a bit sad but not deeply affected like the rest. Jason seeks them out for comfort and they end up practically raising him while Mendel falls into deeper depression. Mendel either eventually commits or dies of overdosing leaving Jason with his godparents, Charlotte and Cordelia. Jason will grow up with major issues but will go on to be an HIV activist and a great LGBT+ allie, all in memory of his best friend and his father. But that’s just a theory, a musical theory.

I recently found Falsettos for the first time, and on my first watch, I did so well not to cry. A couple of tears here and there, especially seeing Whizzer's face when he looks at Jason in Days Like This, but nothing major. Then Jason put the chess piece on the gravestone and I was in floods. That part broke me.
