As a young guy, you might not realize that when Forrest Gump was released in the early 90's that the vfx were a big deal and everyone knew about it. Yes, they were so good that they were "invisible", but the story of the pioneering vfx by Robert Zemeckis was not a secret. It was just as groundbreaking as Jurassic Park had been the year before it.
@whyjnot4202 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a person born in 1980 who saw both in theaters, I can say that while Jurassic Park's effects were cooler (there is no T-Rex in Forrest Gump), the effects in Forrest Gump have always been more impressive to me. One of the reasons that I have always preferred full animated things, to that which are made of a mix of live action and animation, is that when everything on screen is fake, it looks more real than when half of it is real. That is how I say it anyways. In a little more depth I would say that upon starting something that is 100% animated, you are already committed to a certain level of suspension of disbelief for the purposes of entertainment. Making it so that you are less critical of any one element. Than you are when starting a movie or show that is a mix of live action with realistic CGI animation where you are supposed to believe that it is all just stuff shot on camera. The things that really get away with a mix of live action and animation like Who Framed Roger Rabbit or even Monkeybone, are a different breed. addendum: The kit they used to insert Hanks into old footage was used for even better purposes in the Trials and Tribble-ations episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. To insert DS9 people into classic episodes of the original series. :D caveat: I have always been a giant fan of all forms of animation, so things like the CGI of Jurassic Park or the awesome merging with historical footage like with Forrest Gump, have always been of great interest to me. A part of my brain is always looking at that side of a movie, even as another part is simply loving the experience.

Such a good film. Keep in mind that VFX companies in the 90s (eg. ILM) were always pioneering new technologies and techniques, and often combining old techniques with new (like puppetry with CGI in Terminator 2). The result was a first-time effect, tailor-made for the scene, which blended beautifully and looked incredible. Nowadays most VFX companies do not pioneer new techniques or technologies, because they have so many methods at their disposal already, and effects are often "pre-visualized". It's a cheaper, cookie-cutter approach. Which is why CGI today often looks far less convincing and is easy to spot. Add to that the fact that film budgets are much larger, and main actors in effects-driven films can command a large percentage of the film's budget as their salary, less money remains for experimenting or pioneering techniques

Pretty much. You can actually do something like this yourself with any camera you have kicking around, even your phone, and some video editing software. The trick is, you make sure the camera is "locked off" - cannot move, anywhere, not even a tiny bit - on a tripod or similar mount, and take some shots of the scene with no-one in it. This is your "plate". Now when you move into shot, you can make yourself appear and disappear by dissolving between the two clips - the background remains the same so it just looks like it's you that's fading in and out! Now, if you wrap green or blue cloth around your legs, you can use a chroma keyer to punch that out, or punch a "Death Becomes Her" hole right through your body with a green circle on your shirt...

NO CGi, I had the feather sequence for real. I was setting on a bench at night in a lit area. A feather floated down from overhead. The air was still. This feather floated down till it was even right in front of my face a few inches. There it continued to spin but was totally stationary, hovering as if on an invisible string for a seemingly long moment, neither going up or down or anywhere. Then it continued it's downward path but instead of landing on my lap, it drifted over just in time to land on the bench right beside me. I really can't explain it except this movie came to mind immediately. I still have that feather. I thought it might bring good luck but it is indifferent.

Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. - Revelation 3:20 Revelation 6 1st Seal: White horse = Roman Empire conquering nations under Trajan 98-117 AD & Gospel spreading rapidly. 2nd Seal: Red horse, bloody civil wars with 32 different Emperors, most killed by the sword. 185-284 AD 3rd Seal: Black horse, economic despair from high taxes to pay for wars, farmers stopped growing. 200-250 AD 4th Seal: Pale horse, 1/4th of Romans died from famine, pestilence; at one point 5,000 dying per day. 250-300 AD 5th Seal: Diocletian persecuted Smyrna church era saints for ten years, blood crying out for vengeance. 303-312 AD 6th Seal: Political upheaval in the declining Roman Empire while the leaders battled each other. 313-395 AD Revelation 7 Sealing of 144,000, the saints, before trumpet war judgments, which led to the fall of the Roman Empire. Revelation 8 1st Trumpet: Alaric and the Goths attacked from the north, the path of hail, and set it on fire. 400-410 AD 2nd Trumpet: Genseric and the Vandals attacked the seas and coastlands, the blood of sailors in water. 425-470 AD 3rd Trumpet: Attila and the Huns scourged the Danube, Rhine & Po rivers area, dead bodies made water bitter. 451 AD 4th Trumpet: Odoacer and the Heruli caused the last Western Emperor (sun), Senate (moon) to lose power. 476 AD With the Western Roman Emperor (restrainer of 2 Thes. 2) removed; the son of perdition Popes took power. Revelation 9 Two woe judgments against the central 1/3rd and eastern 1/3rd of the Roman Empire. 612-1453 AD 5th Trumpet: Locust & scorpions point to Arabia, the rise of the Muslim army. Islam hides Gospel from Arabs. 612-762 AD 6th Trumpet: Turks released to attack Constantinople with large cannons (fire, smoke, brimstone). 1062-1453 AD Revelation 10 The little book is the printed Bible, which was needed after the Dark Ages when Scriptures were banned by Popes. Revelation 11 7th Trumpet: Martin Luther measured Roman Church; found that it’s an apostate church, not part of true temple. The two witnesses are the Scriptures and saints who proclaim the pure Gospel and testify against the antichrist Popes. Papal Church pronounced Christendom dead in 1514 AD. Silence for 3.5 years. Then Luther posted his 95 Thesis, which sparked the Protestant Reformation and brought the witnesses back to life. Millions of Catholics were saved. Revelation 12 Satan used the Roman Empire to try to wipe out the early Church, Satan was cast down as the Empire collapsed. Revelation 13 The antichrist beast Popes reigned in power 1,260 years, 538-1798, is the little horn of Daniel 7, son of perdition. The false prophet Jesuit Superior General rose to power from land (earth) of Vatican and has created many deceptions. Revelation 14 Points to great harvest during the Protestant Reformation & wrath on Catholic countries who obey antichrist Pope. Revelation 15 Overcoming saints victorious over the beast. Prelude to 7 vials and judgment on those who support Papal Rome. Revelation 16 1st Vial: The foul sore of atheism was poured out on Catholic France, leaving them with no hope, led to revolution. 2nd Vial: The French Revolution started in 1793, killed 250,000, as France had obeyed the Pope and killed saints. 3rd Vial: The French Revolution spread to rural areas of France, where Protestants had been killed in river areas. 4th Vial: The bloody Napoleonic wars shed the blood of countries who had revered and obeyed the antichrist Pope. 5th Vial: Judgment on the seat of the beast. Papal States invaded in 1798, Pope imprisoned, removed from power. 6th Vial: The Turks vast domain dried up, they were only left with Turkey. They lost control of Palestine in 1917 AD, Israel became a nation again in 1948

When in Savannah, where the square scene was filmed, I was told that the bus that goes by had to reverse as it was on a one-way street and was not permitted to go forwards further down the street The film-makers therefore filmed it reversing past the bench and then reversed the film to show a forward motion.

A few scenes were filmed at USC. I worked in the Telecom Dept at the time. There is a scene where Forrest runs across the street in the rain to wherever it was that Jenny was living. There was a Pacific Bell pay phone pedestal with 3 pay phones on it in front of David Marks Hall (Jennys residence ). The pedestal was in the shot, Pac Bell wouldn’t remove it for the shot so I had the pleasure of removing it. There was a bike rack in the shot as well. USC wouldn’t remove it so I suggested putting period bicycles in it…… memories

I know a lot of people will bring up The Matrix as the best SFX movie of the 90s, but to me there was this time in the early-mid 90s when I was a teenager when I was repeatedly blown away by things we had never seen before. Terminator 2 in 1991, Jurassic Park in 1993, and Forrest Gump in 1994. Nobody had seen effects like this at the time, it was mind blowing. Yeah that wire-fu CGI stuff from The Matrix and of course Star Wars Phantom Menace in 1999 was all nice and cool, but it was not as mind blowing for most mainstream people like what we had had during that 1990-1994 time. I remember in 1994 thinking the Forrest Gump SFX was even more impressive than T2 or Jurassic Park.

In the past few years, there's been an actual conspiracy (this is not nearly as debatable as many people think, see "no CGI is invisible CGI" on YT) to smear and devalue VFX artists. It's not some complicated nefarious thing, it's probably just out of touch execs thinking that pouncing on this extreme cultural trend of ignorance is a way to market movies (EG it's easier and cheaper to perpetuate a myth than it is to correct it). CGI has gotten so good that most people who claim they hate CGI are often fooled and praise CGI scenes for being practical (way too funny). Basically, history has been revised, and this is somehow most prevalent among older people who theoretically would be the most likely to know better. For example, Top Gun Maverick uses mostly CGI, but you will have some of the production team outright lie in interviews pretending that what you see in the movie is mostly practical, and have boomers running around praising a film that has over 10 minutes of credits featuring digital VFX artists for having no digital VFX.
@cmiggiani2 жыл бұрын
Not sure where the surprise is coming from. When it was released, the movie was heralded for the amount of VFX used and the groundbreaking techniques used in countless scenes. There were countless specials shown on it. And not only visual FX but audio. It was even a model for the burgeoning "surround sound" tech for home audio and was one if the main movies used to demo it at pretty much every electronics store.
@awesomeferret2 ай бұрын
You must have grown up in the 90s or earlier, before it was common for production teams to lie to people's faces in interviews about how much special effects people use. CGI can be so good that it fools most CGI haters, so you can have execs lie about filming something practical in an interview then see a VFX reel of all the CGI and be like "so, how does a movie with over ten minutes of digital VFX credits get praised by so many boomers for having no digital VFX". Basically, most AAA CGI is truly photorealistic, and so when it's not, it really stands out, and therfore, people are conditioned to think that most CGI is bad, because they don't realize that most of the footage they think is practical contains a lot of CGI too. It's sorta sad when you think about it, how people have been conditioned BY THE MOVIE INDUSTRY to hate one of the most appreciated (make no mistake, real artists love CGI... That's why all your favorite directors use it heavily, even if they try to gaslight you into thinking otherwise), and most artisticly flexible tools ever known to humanity.

On the boat, when Dan swings out over the side of the boat, they removed a piece of the side of the boat, and used CGI to replace it. I saw that shot explained somewhere years ago. I actually thought at the time that the actor had lost his legs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqKkk51-gLRooK8

Funny note about the napalm sequence: Director Robert Zemeckis went to the toilet right before the special effects team was about to make, the one and only, shot of the explosives for the napalm sequence. It's about a mentally challenged man through serendipitous circumstances being involved in some of the biggest events in his lifetime, then at the end the woman he loved is still a piece of crap and he still loves her regardless. The movie really has no underlying moral or lesson to take away. It's somewhat entertaining, but ultimately pointless.

@awesomeferret2 ай бұрын
That's because you saw it in 94, before it was common for CGI haters to mistake CGI scenes for practical effects. People are so ignorant about the VFX in modern movies that when there's a bad CGI shot, they think it's the only CGI shot in the movie. Top Gun Maverick is a famous example in how most of the movie was mostly CGI, yet there were articles on otherwise credible websites praising it for using no CGI (even though there's over ten minutes of digital VFX credits). The VFX doesn't surprise you because you always understood that good digital effects are ones that are not obviously digital effects. It's really sad how many people haven't realized that CGI is so good now that Hollywood is using myths to market really good CGI as practical effects (which of course, usually requires lying), because they know that it's easier to lean into the "CGI is bad" myths that it is to educate people and help them realize that the reason bad CGI stands out so much in modern movies is because the rest of the CGI in the movie (AKA the majority) is so good that it's mistaken for practical effects.
