The longer this goes on the more I wonder how anybody thought some of the design decisions made in these games were a good idea at any point.

For a lot of them, I feel like it's a cynical "Those kids will buy anything." There are some where it's likely that someone had an idea, and since you can go from idea to finished game in two or three months, nobody ever stopped to think if they should do that.

“Let’s try a new character!” “Why a bee girl?” “I think she’s cute!” “Intern Taro has a breakout game! Let’s include that!” And so on. Like a stone soup of internal projects that would find their way out into larger games but where Nintendo isn’t going to release a Mario or Zelda game until they have a real statement to make with Hudson it’s “LOL here you go!”

This one is super cute with great presentation. That's where the good points end. Beyond that, it's just a fascinating bit of history. A video game, based on a cartoon, based on video games.

I recently bought this game based on the cover - adventure island but with a bug? Sounds cool! I start playing, get the hang of the controls, make it to the end of the level, and… I can’t get in the door? I find the dragon minibosses, beat all three, and go back to the door. Still locked?? What am I supposed to do? Then I randomly find a hidden egg. I pick it up and Breakout begins. Odd minigame, but ok. I notice some letters falling, so I grab them, and… Game Over??? This game bewilders at every turn. I’m glad I found this video to explain what in god’s name was going on!

I felt the same way, I bought this game on eBay for like $2 the other day because I like adventure island, I like Hudson, and it looks super cute, but wooow not only did I think the game would be something way more straightforward, talk about something that just puts everything in your way oi

I love to see genres mixed together, but this one definitely seems to offer the worst of both worlds (on top of the other bad design decisions).

Man, Hudson loved making games where you have to constantly fire crap at the background to find hidden collectibles

bug girl is very cute. it's a shame there's just this reoccuring pattern of games taking notes from Druaga and SMB in the worst ways possible. secrets and hidden content are exciting, so let's make our game worse, less fun and less cohesive to include them!

I’m amazed I’d never heard of this before, I always love learning about obscure spinoffs of noted characters. But I definitely am glad now I never tried to play it

I'd seen this one on sale online but never actually pulled the trigger on it. sounds like I really dodged a bullet there! also didn't know this was based on a children's series, so go figure. (and I can't imagine what the album sounds like, man the Famicom days in Japan were wild, I'm so glad this series exists!!)
