I don't know if I did notice the item inventory juggling issue when I played it years ago.

Cool game, but I tended to get pretty lost in the cave areas since they all look the same and have really long hallways and many branching paths. Had that same problem with Lagoon on SNES.

I absolutely love this game, though god did it every need a better control scheme (or more buttons). Also some more dungeon tilesets would be nice so it's not always the same cave. One other note about the grinding: if it's like the NES version, some enemies (particularly bosses) will have a minimum level before you can hurt them so grinding is unavoidable. Good thing the combat is a lot of fun and the soundtrack is a banger.

I'm pretty sure the Famicom version has the level gatekeeping as well, though I didn't test it.

This one was available in my local game store last week and I actually passed on it. I'm still burned out from chronic inventory switcheroo due to some playthroughs of the original Link's Awakening. My brother had the GB version of Crystalis and I would like to pick up that version one day as the nostalgia helps me overlook its issues.

It's still wild to me that FC games were still being released regularly by the time the Neo Geo was released. But, when the games are this good, there's no reason to complain

Very good game. My only gripe is the sword/orb juggling, other than that it's still neat. Hope we see a sequel/remake at some point, but who knows how things turn out; there's still some room for improvement on this concept, after all.

I tried to play this one when I got the SNK 40th anniversary collection on the Switch. I accidentally found the boss room before being given a chance to explore the rest of the area, then promptly died and lost most of my progress and then I quit at that point. If it is worth playing beyond that point then I'm definitely using a strategy guide for it instead of playing it blind 😠

I heard a lot of good things about this one back in the day, but I never got my hands on a copy. More recently I have heard it doesn't hold up super well, but is still fun.

I never realized how close the release of the NEO*GEO was to this! rented it when I was younger then some many years later finally got a hold of a copy of my own! Yeah there's definitely a lot of issues with this one (one that I found out in my last attempt was if you're not high enough level you just will not damage the bosses!) but the rest of it is very enjoyable, for sure. Thought I heard something about a sequel actually for the NEO*GEO but of course it never materialized. shame they didn't do another one to address all those issues in the first game.

You forgot to mention that SNK would release Mechanized Attack, but only in the US on the NES and not on the Famicom in Japan.

This is a really good game and the best SNK release for the system, that's for sure. But for me God Slayer slightly falls behind two ARPG masterpieces, one's from Tecmo in 91 and another is from Konami in 92. Also Mashin Eyuuden Wataru Gaiden and Super Chinese games can be considered as contenders for the best Famicom ARPG :)

I haven't played Tecmo's yet since it was a late pick up for me, I couldn't get into the Konami game but it'll get a fair shake when we reach that point, and there's a Varie(!) game along these lines that I think is pretty neat in 1991.

@@RndStranger oh, I'm gonna look up for that Varie game!

This game looks indeed really good to me, however Dr Sparkle of Chrontendo totally hated on this one in his 59th video

I won't begrudge anyone for liking or not liking a game. I certainly have liked a lot of these games that people aren't fond of and disliked some beloved classics.
