I always wanted this game when I saw it shown in Nintendo Power. I called it "Mega Girl" or "Mega Man, except a girl." It just really appealed to me. I never saw it for sale. That north american box art kinda made it blend in with other games.

I'd describe this one as "Megaman for people who found the first game to be too easy" 😛

If it's as hard as you say, I find it especially vexing that the NA version removed the continue feature, according to TCRF. No continues, you gotta 1CC it to finish! The arcade gamer in me appreciates that change, but that probably wasn't a good idea for a home release. There's a fanlation of the original for those that want to see (and understand) all the cutscenes.

Sadly, this game got 'Karnov'd'; they took out most of the cutscenes for the Western release (the credits literally start rolling on the final boss screen) and made the game harder, too (continues are finite, I believe). Still, it's fine regardless, but the Japanese version is a bit more playable. Watching your footage, you were pretty much at the end of the game, so good luck finishing it!

I think the U.S. version was an early build of the game. Same thing happened with Metal Storm and Journey to Silius, and there's evidence that Contra on the Famicom was also a revision from the NES version (as opposed to the other way around as it is usually thought of).

@@JohnnyUndaunted I thought of that too, though the NA release came out later (in 1991) in this case, so there's a chance they made those changes due to the rental market... but I haven't really looked into that, so it's just guesswork on my part. Perhaps there's more on the Japanese side of the internet on that.

Let us not forget how insanely stingy this gave is with life, at least in the US release. I just killed an enemy over 200 times without it dropping anything.

Weird to hear a positive take on this one, Krion Conquest has a bad rap in the states as an also-ran Megaman clone. I own it but have barely played it. Time to rectify that!

would it surprise y'all that I've only ever emulated this one? yeah a lot of the retro reviews I've seen on this one make the rockman comparison, but they definitely don't share a ton in common. didn't know about those codes though! may be worth revisiting someday.
