Sunsoft debuts its new mascots and then never does anything this cool with them again.

Great game - awesome soundtrack, fun maps and enemies... and my favourite genre, Metroidvania; what's not to love? Speaking of Sunsoft, they're back. They just announced it - for now it's Trip World in colour and a remake of Ikki (because of course). This one might get a rerelease soon, as a result (UPDATE: They JUST announced it - remake time, it seems!). Remarkably good time for this video. We'll see what they come up with next.

If the gameplay is mostly untouched/improved a bit, it's probably gonna be enjoyable all the same... though I gotta say that I'd rather have a sequel/a new game in the franchise in the 8-bit/16-bit style instead.

Just got done playing this version on my Switch. Was so happy when I saw they released this too not long after the Sequel came out. So happy to be able to take my favorite Famicom Game with me legally anytime & anywhere.

Yeah, this is the best Famicom "metroidvania"! It's way better than Rygar or Clash at Demonhead (which are also far from bad). Well, maybe the last ever officially released FC game is on par with Hebereke 😉

@@RndStranger I'm definitely not in the market but pricing was probably due to location (Surugaya) - although to be fair to the store, they did have some very well priced stuff too. I've seen much worse (relative to the game's usual value)!

This is def one of my fav games that never made it to the US! The pressing down thing is weird at first, but if you think about it, Ducktales is the same way using the pogostick!

I think this might be my favourite Sunsoft game on the Famicom, mainly because it comes off like a more refined take on the Blaster Master gameplay without the top down areas. I'm not a fan of their next 3 games being covered (Super Spy Hunter and Gimmick just aren't to my tastes, sorry), but I am now intrigued to see the video on Batman RotJ because I've always thought of it as a very flawed run n gun with some top tier presentation to mask it.

I get that metroidvania as a term is easy to define and understand when describing a game. I use the term a lot but actually I don’t like it. But I totally agree with you, this is a great game and not surprised to see why it has so inflated prices. Until this day still can’t understand why they never did a sequel/remake on the 16bit instead of those other gamestyles they chose. For me this is the best action exploration game in the nes/famicom. At least is in the top 5.

I managed to play this game on my everdrive, using savestates, and almost no guide. It's not very intuitive, but you can get through it with some guessing. Would I love to have this game in my Famicom collection? Absolutely! Can I get it? No way in hell. It will forever be just beyond my grasp. EDIT: HOLY SHIT THE TIMING!!! Congrats on your amazingly coincidental post today!

Man that why nintendo create Kirby, have Envy, but sunsoft was best because group Fluffy heroes, Kirby most alone, like movie Home Alone adventure(movie inspiration)😅😅😅

1:30 gekka no yasoukyoku, or symphony of the night yes i'm going to nitpick pronunciation the kk was just a k, you need a stop in there, before the k sound the ou in yasou should be a bit longer, i feel the k in kyoku was not pronounced at all the final u shouldn't be devoiced

Which Sunsoft game was it that coined "kusoge"? Super Arabian? Ikki?

Ikki is the game that's usually referenced here; there was an article about how bad the game was and that's what's pointed to as where kusoge as a term takes root.

Ikki - the irony is that they're remaking this game nowadays, because it sold 'really' well in Japan back then... unlike Blaster Master for example. They're even advertising it as the legendary kusoge. >_>
