Affordable housing is not a priority for the US. If it was then they would do something. They would rather build high rise buildings and sports stadiums to turn a profit. Its all about money.

The way we treat low income people in the United States is despicable. The lack of affordable housing is so bad that in major cities teachers,police officers, fire fighters and other essential workers can’t afford to own or rent.

Just wait until all these illegals pop preggo with anchor babies! It will be OVER for America and Donald Trump will be POWERLESS to intervene! I hope you realize they are getting popped at this very moment, and Americans will pay the hospital bills!👶👶👶🤱And we can't have all those babies on the streets, so, they will get welfare, food stamps and PERMANENT housing, at taxpayers' expense! Of course, the illegals will be “required” to work, so there will be job programs for them also. In fact, the ONLY taxpayers remaining in America will be the NEW citizen "Supremacists"! My advice is to apply for dual citizenship abroad, at the VERY least! Trump can't save you, though I think he means well. Romans, Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks and countless others never thought their nations would fall, just like American "geniuses". 🕳️

Probably because upward income mobility is extremely difficult. Even more so if you come from an already poor background. Like what are they supposed to do, grow up.and suddenly afford housing and other necessities even though the prices constantly increase and wages mostly stay the same in terms of spending power? We'd have way more homeless than we do now, in that case. Bootstrap philosophy is a meme.

What this news segment didn’t mention is that not only has there not been any public housing built in several decades, but cities have actively been tearing down public housing and not replacing it with anything. This clearly exacerbates the problem.
@mistahkrazy805

Depends on the area. I live in So Cal, and in my city they tore down this huge section of old low income housing and rebuilt on that land, and increased the number of units 5 fold. They've been building new low income/affordable housing buildings over the last decade. There is still a waiting list, and it takes years, but not this long. Before they started the housing projects here the wait list was 7+yrs, now it's down to around 3yrs or so. Hopefully they find a way to help some of these people find a home, even in the private market. My mom was on section 8 when I was growing up. Single mom, 4 kids, 2 jobs. Very thankful that she was able to find homes for us to live in, and I'm thankful for those landlords who willing to rent their homes to someone on section 8. But my mom made sure we took care of those homes, because we knew that they weren't ours, so we need to respect it, and take care of it the way we'd want someone to take care of our belongings.

Public housing is so dangerous. I lived on a bus line that went through it and every place someone was killed there were sidewalk/curb memorials put up. MOST of them were for children, the ones who were hit by cars and drive by shootings. Sometimes there would be so many w stuffed animals, cards, little kids notes, crosses, flowers, and the child's favorite toy, and ppl on the bus would be in tears at seeing so many. I think the cities tear the public housing down bc it becomes a blight and a disgrace in the community. And ppl not in that group feel like there is no purpose to build more bc the ppl don't change so the situation will just repeat itself.

I’m from Philly and yes, the waitlist here is crazy. I’m not on the waitlist, I make too much to qualify. I’ve been living in Media,Pa ( a very nice suburb of Philly) for 11 years. @@kaybee5162 I believe Katrina was almost 2 decades ago. Philly as changed a lot since then. A few years ago Philly was one of the most gentrified cities in the US, followed by San Diego. We now have a ton of New Yorkers moving down here and development is insane in the city. For affordable housing most owners of those buildings are no longer renewing their contract to provide affordable housing. Why? Money. They can simply charge more for rent. There is an affordable housing project in West Philly ( University City) in which the owner has decided not to renew their affordable housing contract. Sparking of course massive protest as affordable housing in the city keeps drying up. If we were still where we were in 2005, I would be happy myself. The two largest booms in homelessness since the Great Depression were in 1980 when Reagan ended free mental healthcare, and second when the Sackler family intentionally got as many Americans addicted to drugs as possible, making them the biggest drug dealers in our history, they only had to pay 5 billion dollars for it. They made 250 billion dollars from it. I think all the cities and towns dealing with the massive boom in homelessness and all the troubles associated with it like crime, arson and cost of social services should also sue. There’s another 250 billion dollars in damages that need fixing. I’m pretty sure that’d really help shrink the homeless population. Most major drug dealers get life in prison. At this point people might as well move and start looking at ways to make a decent living such as getting in the trades, starting a cleaning business or a KZbin channel. Public housing is a trap that will keep people poor and enslaved. I called multiple complexes in according to Wikipedia, the smallest city in NYS and got in after waiting for 2 months. It was hard getting in but I finally got in fast cuz I was in an abusive relationship at the time and the manager at the complex was a good Christian woman and was once in the same boat with her first husband, so she jumped on helping me out fast. Some places we lived when I was younger in the 90s are literally $1600 or $3200. So it’s not these peoples fault that they can’t find a home. It’s systemic. Section 8 destroys middle class communities. As a landlord who actually lives in the community where I rent apartments. I don't accept section8. I not only care about how much they treat my units. I ARE HOW THEY TREAT THE NEIGHBORHOOD. How they will effect the area. Most landlords only care about how they'll effect their units, I care about how theyll effect the area as well. This is why it's so important to keep people who don't live in your area from owning property in areas. PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIVE IN YOUR COMMUNITY DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY. THAT INCLUDES THE GOVERNMENT AND INVESTORS. I used to rent to the elderly section 8. But then their terrible grandkids would come to visit and stay trashing the apartments blasting music, stealing etc.

A social worker friend told me that actually, renters all paid the same rent, but the "affordable" or low income units were subsidized by the govt so the owners were paid much more for renting those units to ppl who couldn't pay hundreds of dollars more. This made no sense bc if you have sufficient income to pay say $500/ month, you wouldn't need to get a govt subsidized apt for wh the govt may have to pay another $700/month for you to live there in the same complex as ppl not subsidized!

The people who are desperate need to apply for vouchers in the less populated "flyover states". Yes, they'll have to move to the state and live there for a year, but after that year they can take the voucher somewhere else. Also, they might not know that if they *already have a voucher* they can use it to get into housing in their desired city, even while hundreds or thousands of people are still on the waiting list. Why? Because, the waiting list is to GET a voucher, and people who already have one don't need to be on the waitlist. They can port their voucher into the housing authority of the city they want to move to and take any available unit whose rent (and maybe utilities, in some cases) is under their voucher limit. But, I understand that people in survival mode aren't necessarily making the most strategic decisions. But, they need to.

Ms. B. Churchill
@mistahkrazy805
@mistahkrazy805 Жыл бұрын
This honestly goes both ways. If a homeowner accepts Section 8, they have to abide by the laws that go along with the receiving of government funds. So homeowners are required to fix any issues in the home, and if they don't, they can be sued, stop receipt of payment, and may have to pay back money for not keeping their home "up to code" with repairs and such. My landlord is like that, kind of shady, owns a lot of properties. I pay my rent by myself, but I've asked about repairs and he gives me the run around. So I told him that I'll take him to court if he doesn't fix things that need to be fixed. I also said we can do a 2nd option, and that's I will fix things out of my own pocket, but I will give the receipt and pay the difference towards rent. Which he eventually agreed to. 2 units down a lady lived there with her son and was on housing and my landlord was hers as well. He wouldn't fix anything, housing was complaining. Then they stopped his payments, and it happened right when that eviction stuff happened with covid in 2020, so he couldn't evict her. They ended up suing him, housing did, and she did a civil case. They won, and she left. All he had to do was fix the things that needed to be fixed (mind you this was a townhouse thay was built in the early 1970s).

I feel for any families who would have to wait for so long for a home. I feel almost guilty that I was able to buy my own home at age 21 (very old, out of date and needed almost everything ) and still I was amazed to have been able to buy it t that age. I spent the next 20 years remodeling, painting and improving that home. It was one hundred years old buy the time I left that home.

I did the exact same thing, bout a home that was livable but needed a lot of work, paid cash I saved and spent the next 10 years slowly fixing it up, instead of waiting for housing rent 1 room and be uncomfortable but disciplined for as long as it takes, it will pay off in the end

Loophole time! If you are in an area that has a long wait time for Section 8 Vouchers. Do some research and try to find out which Housing Authorities has a shorter Wait List. I live in a area that has a 2 to 3 month Wait List. Once you do that, apply for a voucher for that area. Instead of waiting 5, 8, or 18+ years for a voucher, you can get a voucher as little as 2 to 3 months. Then you could port/transfer the voucher to the area of your choice. There is a catch to port/transfer process. Some Housing Authorities requires you to live on there jurisdiction for 1 year before you could port/transfer. Some areas (like I live) only requires you to live on their jurisdiction at the time you apply for the voucher for in order to port/transfer the voucher. EDIT: I do not know or sure if you could move (temp.) to the Housing Authority jurisdiction, apply for voucher, and moved back after you applied. At least in my area, you have to show them an ID or bills with your current address to start the port/transfer. I would suggest not to do that, otherwise you make be wasting alot of time and money moving.

Waiting more than a decade for public assistance vs. using that time to acquire a new set of skills to improve one's economic outlook sits an opportunity cost. The cost of becoming a chef, truck driver, auto mechanic, aircraft mechanic, elevator mechanic, crane operator, healthcare professional and many more. Community colleges offers lots of short and long-term programs, and for most low income people, some of these programs are nearly free, if not free after financial aid packages.

The government also gives financial aid to help poor people to get additional vocational training or college degrees to help them qualify for higher paying jobs or careers. A woman with children who gets a LOW WAGE job may not be in the position to drop snap benefits and section 8 housing for $12-15 dollars an hour. Government and the people who elect those governments often don't want affordable housing. If developers were allowed to build enough housing based on the demand, the housing supply would increase to meet the demand and that would bring down housing and rent prices tremendously and housing would be much more affordable, then you wouldn't need as much of these special low-income programs or tax breaks to build affordable housing. If enough housing existed, prices would come down on their own. But unfortunately a lot of people don't want the neighborhood changed so they elect officials to local governments who place zoning restrictions on what and how much can be built. There are also other regulations put in place, many times at the state level, which make it more difficult and more expensive to build more housing. All of this contributes to driving up the cost of housing. The situation is particularly bad in California because a lot of people want to live there, and the government entities at all levels have put in place more regulations than exist in most places that prevent the building of enough housing and make housing more expensive than it needs to be. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnfPpJqVot96Y68 kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5XQeKGZobaYe7M kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6nKqaqBo61rr5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipSbiYR9etR4prs

So instead of making smart choices, doing the work to better your life financially, you spend a decade complaining, having more kids, and mad that you cant get free housing?? Whats not being said is that alot of these people know how to game the system, they know that more kids mean more food stamps, the kids become an excuse as to why they cant work full time, why they cant go to school, why they are stressed, etc. The system is broken.

Because, how much rent you pay on Section 8 depends on your income. Once you have the voucher, as long as you follow the rules, you get to keep it. You don't have to worry about getting evicted if you lose your job or get sick and can't work. That's why people stay on the waitlist so long, especially if they're a part of what's considered to be a vulnerable population like the disabled or the working poor.
