@@d.e.b.b5788 Possibly. Also, African Greys tend to be very picky when it comes to choosing friends. @Robert Ray. It’s ok. I’m feeling better now after some time has passed. I know now after the autopsy he would not have lived much longer. Despite popular belief many African Greys do not live much past 25 years in the wild nor captivity. In the wild they fall pray to predators both animal and human. In captivity they do not live any longer than that sometimes because they are genetically prone to hardening of the arteries which chokes of blood supply to the liver or or their organs and they die of heart attack or stroke. Even Einstein the famous African Grey who had great care did not have long life. An African Grey can live longer if they can be prevented from eating nuts and seeds which are candy to them and cause fatty liver or hardening of arteries. I am very glad mine did not have fatty liver because that is painful to them and a slow death. Im glad mine died quickly and without pain. To live long African Greys need to be flighted for optimal exercise to thwart of the fattty diet diseases. Not sure how it is working out but some authorities are presently recommending only a teaspoon of seeds or 1 walnut sized nut per day perhaps given as a treat and the rest to be vegetable and whole grain pellets, much fresh vegetables and some fruit. African Greys usually hate pellets or mine did. Sometimes can trick them into eating them by making bird health friendly baked items and bake them into it for them to pick out like a “seed” and eat for fun. I did not know the importance of this seed seeking foraging behavior when I got my bird and the internet wasn’t perfected then. No youtube or anything. My bird could not be flighted when I got them because the pet store had clipped his wings, I never clipped him but he never learned to fly. If I ever had a bird again I’d try to rehab it to fly while young for the exercise. So much to lean and know and even the scientists still don’t know a lot. I kept my bird a little skinny thinking I was avoiding fatty liver disease which I did. But I was unaware African Greays will still get a fatty disorder calledhardening if of the arteries anyway if given more than a teaspoon of seed mix in a day. My seed mix had pellets but African Greys always gravitate toward eating as much seed as they can get away with. Nothing brings more joy than a well cared for very interactive bird. Even when my bird was beginning to not feel as well he still hid it and played, talked a lot and had a good time,

They're pretty brilliant. I remember seeing a doc on PBS about a bird who they were trying to make do his really smart "tricks". And he said, "Don't want to. Wanna go home. Hungry." And it was so contextual, I knew right then and there that they really do learn to understand words and use them appropriately.
@patchdavis352 жыл бұрын
Dr. Pepperberg's Alex (unfortunately, he was essentially a lab rat) would say "Wanna go back" when he didn't want to "work" any longer. His life could have been more emotionally fulfilling, but he did prove to the scientific community how intelligent his species really is. He changed our definition of "bird brain" forever. Thank you, dear Alex, RIP.

They share a similar part in their brain like us that allows them to do that. Just shows how big that part really is. It's small but big. They have to learn how to talk by a certain age or they won't grasp it just like us. 🤷 and to say humans aren't genetically mutated is a lie because animals walk the earth before humans and look at all the similarities we have to some of them

His voice is so « human » 😮 Usually, the other birds' voices are higher than his own. He really has a very human voice. And on top of that, he speaks perfectly and looks like he understand what he is saying, so it accentuates even more this impression of humanity. Incredible bird

I’m so glad you talked about African Greys using English - CORRECTLY and IN CONTEXT. My cousin has a grey, Buddy, and it is absolutely true that greys can communicate in English just like people do. One day, we were standing outside the house but Buddy could hear us, and he said ‘you’re talking too loud". My cousin had a dog Buddy didn’t like. The dogs name was Max. My cousin pulled a turkey out of the oven, and Buddy said, "Awwww Max!” Then made a laughing sound. There’s so many more examples with Buddy. People who don’t know greys, or even animals, think I’m nuts when I tell them greys can speak human language and are complicated as humans are - but it’s so true. And Gizmo shows that too.

Amazing 🤩 I inherited mum’s Grey. He said things in her voice and spoke to us in context. Extremely intelligent! We could never handle him though, unfortunately, he could bite real bad! He died last year aged 54, and I still find myself listening out for him. His last words to me after his final fit were ‘alright Pol’? Poor old boy😢. Enjoy your birdie!! ❤

An old former GF inherited her grandmother's grey. Which I had taught to curse using a cue, he knew two of them. Which I taught to the old former GF. Saw her the other day and said Roscoe now knows quite a few more. I think he's probably got another 20 years in him. Was a cool bird.

I love this little guy! He’s such a character! Experts will probably tell you that these birds don’t understand what they are saying, but these folks live with him 24/7 and hear him talking all the time. I can understand that a bird in the wild doesn’t understand what he is mimicking, but it would appear that this guy has learned a lot by living with humans and through some parrot magic has learned the context of when to say them, like a child does when they are learning to talk. It’s not just about food rewards, because he talks plenty when he doesn’t have to, I think he understands what these people did to give him a home and make him comfortable and healthy, and it’s his way of giving back some love!

I'm sure it's true, most of the time, that talking birds are just mimicking sounds without understanding. But we know that some animals can learn to understand key words when we speak to them, so it shouldn't be any surprise at all that an animal that both knows those words, and can speak them, might sometimes intentionally use them appropriately. And this is an African Gray, probably the smartest of all bird species.
@codahighland Жыл бұрын
@@chrisc6857 Anyone who says parrots don't understand isn't an expert. The actual experts that research parrot intelligence know that it isn't JUST mimicry. It's proper communication, and parrots are perfectly capable of learning what kinds of sounds line up with the concepts they care about. The misconception comes from it not being a LANGUAGE. They don't understand the individual words, and they aren't sophisticated enough in using them to be able to synthesize new ideas with them. They don't have grammar. So when you hear that a parrot doesn't understand what they're saying, it actually means they aren't processing the words you're saying the way a human would. They still understand how the sounds associate with context and will mimic those sounds to get the responses they want. By contrast, songbirds ARE just blind mimics. They don't associate meaning with the songs they learn. Anecdotally: My cockatiel says "pretty bird" and I'm pretty sure he thinks it just means "bird" because he only says it when he's interacting with another bird (or his own reflection) even if he's angry at the other bird.

African Greys are absolutely the smartest of all the parrot species in my opinion. Years ago I saw a news report about Alex, an African Gray who was part of a research project at a major university in Arizona. His profound intelligence and ability to carry on an interactive conversation just amazed me and I have been a fan of his ilk ever since. Gizmo is another stellar example of the extreme intelligence of these birds.

@cher lynne I feel like you do. It hurts my heart. I live in Stockholm, Sweden. I found a city pigeon that was injured and evil kids wanted to hurt her. I said "you'll have to fight me first and I'll kick all of your asses so better run kids" I was so angry. I put the innocent bird in a box with soft material, breathing holes and took her home. Gave her unsalted sunflower seeds and water. Talked kindly and quietly from outside the box cos nice people talk to birds when they feed them, where I live. At night I sneak peeked inside. She was a little ball and put her beak in her feathers. She felt safe I hope so she could relax and it was nice and warm and had food and drink. Next day, animal ambulance came and took her to rehabbers. It made me so happy that they don't see city doves as less worth than other birds. Thank you and take care
