Texas has become a joke. The property and sales taxes are insane. Check it out before moving to Texas. Abbott tried to do something about property taxes, but it was still a crazy bill in the end.

I agree that you should look into the tax situation before moving anywhere. That being said no state income tax is a definite plus. We found Texas offers many great amenities, and wonderful people definitely worth a look!

@@WhereNextBoomers the high rate of property taxes in the state of Texas will leave some people homeless. In a 400,000 home you will pay almost 9,000 dollars because some towns have a 2% property tax. For a conservative state that sort of tax is unheard of, but you get your "services." Texas stopped being fiscally conservative when old families started giving relatives (Nepotism) government jobs. Every voting season brings an increase for schools, police, fire departments. People will soon be moving out of Texas if the greed doesn't subside.

@@Chillipep You're correct that the property tax rate in Texas is high at 1.83%. The national average rat for property tax is 1.08%. (Smart Asset.com) There are Homestead Exemptions available for those 65 and over that freeze school property taxes.

@@WhereNextBoomers You forgot to include local property tax which can get you up to 2% or more. Then you have an 8% sales tax...getting close to 9%. The reality is people want all the services for nothing. You might be able to put off the property tax, but you can't leave the property to your children because you will still have to pay the tax. The homestead act exemption very low and really doesn't make a dent in a person's tax bill that does not qualify for the other exemptions. Texas is not family friendly because you have to live in a dive to afford the taxes and your family.
