What’s crazy is that the “German Bedtime story” at 21:00 is actually real. It’s from a collection of German stories known as “Der Struwwelpeter”. The only difference is that it’s not the mother who cuts of the boys thumbs in the actual story, but rather some random insane scissor man.

20:59 I was astonished that the "German bedtime story" was based, in content and style, on the real, existing, turn-of-last-century picture book, _Der Struwwelpeter_ ("Scruffy Peter"), and in particular the story that was designed to make children scared of sucking their thumbs, by inventing a terrifying "Scissor man", who just _bursts_ into your home and cuts off the thumbs of disobedient children. The entire lavishly illustrated book was chock full of these gruesome "morality tales" that all essentially boil down to "Child is disobedient/does socially unacceptable thing - child comes to a horrifying end." I'm old enough that my grandparents still raised my parents on that shit… and my parents are old and senile enough to start talking that "We must return to the good old days when young people were taught _proper_ values," referring to _this_ fucked-up shit.
