That's because plastic wrap isn't the same as it used to be. The original material was polyvinylidene chloride, under the trademark "Saran Wrap". But the material was discontinued in 2004 due to environmental pollution concerns about liberated chlorine. There just isn't a good substitute for it, so plastic wrap since then has been a total waste of time.
