As a near life long parrot companion since 1988, I can really relate. My first bird, a cherry head conure I found at a feed store. He wasn’t hand tame, so I spent the first 6 months hand taking him. Everyday multiple times a day we’d do one foot on the training stick the other on my finger. Then he got scared of my finger in front so I put one finger behind him asked him 1 foot. He then did that many times a day for another 3 months. Then one day he jumped onto my finger both feet and neither of us ever looked back. I did get him a companion to keep company when I had to work. She was a severe macaw. She lived 27 years and then passed unexpectedly. My then conure was devastated as was I 💔 After she died he started letting me touch him in places he never felt comfortable before and that led to him climbing down my shoulder when I sat in the chair to my elbow, turn around and bury his head in my chest bowing his head, asking me to preen him. 🤷🏼‍♀️ In the end he’d be in my lap most nights getting endless preens! He especially loved his wings rubbed. And he would relax into a zombie mode bird. At bedtime he’d pop his head up and start wichit sounds asking me to put him to roost. He played birdie soccer, peek a boo and lived to sing and dance! He passed after we were together 34 years. He’s sorely missed

Our Umbrella Cockatoo just turned 31. We saw him hatched at a breeder. We rescued him and had his beak deformity repaired by a specialist with a molded plastic appliance glued on for weeks to correct an underbite. He’s perfect ever since. I have photos of him on my shoulder at the Grand Canyon and other fun places. He would travel with us wherever we went in the car. After a couple different boarding issues at vets and private homes he’s never been boarded again. When we’d come home to visit family on commercial flights he was transported in the cabin with his own ticket-in a cat carrier. He’d be fine until until he’d get tired and loud. Then my wife would have to take him out and snuggle him to calm him down. You wouldn’t get away with that these days. Then he started flying off our shoulders when he’d get startled or bored. One time he landed high in a neighbor’s tree. He was scared and I had to climb up and get him. We tried a harness but he never liked it. Back then we were told to @crop his wings.” This means to cut the feathers shorter on one or both sides. He still flew. He’s supposed to fly-but unless you have a safe aviary-this can be very dangerous. Trips outside are now very careful. We are mindful of predatory birds and animals as well as mosquitoes and bugs that could transmit disease. I shudder to think what would have happed if he had flown while we were traveling! A house has many dangerous and potentially expensive items to damage. Our lives have been adapted to our companion’s needs. We love our boy, but at 59 we need a plan for his life. A bird can make a good companion, but after we have learned more about captivity breeding, pet stores, and smuggling…I would NOT choose a bird again. A cage is no place for a bird. It is not fair to them. Please: adopt a rescue if you can, but take the classes and be informed.

I completely relate to how this couple cares and plans for the welfare of this sweet little one. My dogs have always been in my wills (I have had to update each one when a dog passes). My current Yorkie is not only in my most current will, but also travelling with me abroad. Unlike the owner who gave Emma up in order to move to Hawaii, I went through the complicated quarantine process to take my dog to Hawaii, as well as to Japan, where we are now visiting for at least a year. My dogs have always been like my child. I could never voluntarily give them up.

I was so happy that they said to do lots of research and take a class, SO MANY people just go out and get a bird. Birds live for a VERY long time, the most common pet birds, things like budgies and such usually live for around 30 YEARS, things like cockatiels can live for 50, and like they said, lots of parrots and cockatoos live for 80 to 90 years. They are pretty much a lifetime commitment. However, they are not comparable to things like tortoises that also have a long life, they require a very large area, constant attention and socialization and they make a LOT of mess. They require hours of attention every day, they need large areas to fly around, they need a very large variety in their diet, they need lots of enrichment, etc. etc. etc. Along with this, they are very loud and can cause lots and lots of damage, most birds are prone to lots of loud screaming, yelling, chirping, constant talking and singing, as well as banging and clanging other things together to make lots of noise, they also tear everything apart from walls to curtains to cabinets to toys, etc. They are extremely messy, definitely one of, if not the messiest house pet, as mentioned, they have tons and tons of dandruff in their feathers which flies off of them in a dust and spreads everywhere they go and on everything they touch, many, many people are very allergic to this. Like I said above, they tear everything apart, it’s an instinct and should be encouraged through toys and such, although it can and will be drastically heightened if they are under stress or not getting enough enrichment. They also poop very often and it smells terrible, they spill their food all over the place, they lose feathers, they can lay eggs, etc. etc, very, very messy. Finally, they are also very expensive, just the original costs of buying the bird itself is almost always hundreds if not even thousands of dollars. Then you have the huge cages, that’s a few hundred more dollars, toys over the course of a year can easily be a hundred to two hundred dollars even on the cheap end, it’s best to make them yourself out of cardboard and such, food can be very expensive, not only do they need a variety of seeds and nuts in their daily diet but also lots and lots of fresh veggies. Lastly, and definitely the most expensive of all is vet trips, birds are exotic animals which automatically means that any health care for them will be much higher than for cats of dogs and it can be much harder to find a vet that deals with birds. A surgery for a bird will most definitely be thousands of dollars and medications are very expensive. Birds like parrots and cockatoos also need beak and nail trimming, nails can be kept at bay by special perches or filing them yourself but a beak should be done by someone who knows what they are doing. Long story short, birds are a TON of work and are definitely not for everybody, before getting any pet you should always do lots and lots of research, my personal rule is three months because you owe it to this animal to put in everything that you’ve got, it’s not okay to just get an animal willy nilly and then get rid of it after a few months because you find out you can’t take care of it or you get bored, you should be fully prepared to take care of this animal until the end of its life, if you can’t, it’s not the animal for you.

My parents had an Umbrella named Pearl who just adored me when I visited my folks between business trips. My folks also had two hilarious talking African Grays, who along with Pearl were the best talkers and did not just parrot our language, they used words to ask for things. Every time we had Spaghetti, the African Gray's and Pearl's favorite food, one of them would say "Here" meaning they wanted it too. Pearl just loved me to death but would scare away my parent's cat Shelly, a Tortoise Shell Cat who crushed on me the very first moment my parents rescued her from a rescue center. Even my fiance then said she was jealous of Shelly's affection to me. As my parents passed on, ten years apart, their birds and my Mom's final home was willed to me, my wife and widowed sister in law. Managing her small estate, I found a bird club woman with experience and care in handling birds, who came and gathered them all for us to pass them on to forever homes. Since my wife, sister in law and I worked long hours, we could not care for the birds the way my retired folks did--they are indeed a life long investment and I did not want to sell them--they were like family to me and my wife and daughter. A few weeks after one of the African Grays was given to a single young woman, she called me and said "I have a bird that knows naughty language, she uses it when I hurt myself while cooking" and I laughingly told her she learned that from my Mom...

My first umbrella cockatoo was 16 weeks old when I got him. I got him without knowing a thing about parrots and cockatoos in particular. I got him for the same reason most people get cockatoos. They’re cute, cuddly, charming and funny. Fortunately I was willing to educate myself about them. Most people, when the novelty wears off, discover they just aren’t willing to put the work and time in it takes to look after cockatoos. That’s how I ended up with two more umbrella cockatoos. They came to me with all sorts of bad behaviours due to neglect and, in one case, abuse. One was a year old and the other 4 years old. That was 30 years ago. I adore my noisy, destructive birds but I worry about their future. I’m 60 years old now and these birds have another 40-50 years in them and I don’t. I live on the prairies in western Canada and there aren’t any rescues I can will them to nor do I have any children or relatives who would take them. They are very social animals and need a lot of attention. They are so darn cute and adorable too. I love them.

What a beautiful family. I'm glad they are young which means Emma could live the rest of her life with them. I have two lovebirds and the reason I decided to adopt them was because I am already in my 60s and their life span is much shorter than bigger parrots and other birds. My cockatoo was not even 2 years old when we got her from a pet shop, she already had the bumble foot on her feet so we took her back where the disease was not able to be treated, so they had to put her to sleep.... My heart was broken! Coco was just like your bird. A loving happy go lucky gal. Wish you all to have many many happy years with her...

Totally agree parrots of any sub species has it's own special requirements along with their natural behaviour. They are not naughty birds and you need to be able to control and redirect their behaviour in a way that you can accept

This is such a sweet story. I can totally understand why they are going to will her. I'm only in my mid-30s, and there's a chance my umbrella cockatoo will outlive me as well. He's 24 years old, so I'm planning to put them in my will too. I agree that people who want these type of birds need to take classes. I've had others see him and tell me they want a bird like him, and I don't sugar coat it. I tell them to really do their research if they're serious about getting one of these guys. They require a lot of attention and are a lifelong commitment. You have to be prepared to devote all the time you have available to them.

That very last couple of seconds shows how responsible and knowledgeable these bird parents are. The baby gets excited and mum immediately and instinctively blocks Emmas face for her safety and babys safety. People dont realise how dangerous a birds beak and talons can be (not with malice but out of fear or defense). These guys are great role models for anyone who wants to own a bird, especially an umbrella cockatoo which are arguably the parrots that take the most commitment and training.
