I love this my daughter now is 41 but when she was a teen I always found bodies sleeping in my living room or raiding the fridge her friends always knew they had a safe place to stay and eat and they all called me mom

Wish those would understand the difference in “Spoiling” to “Comforting” for these kids .. as a once a Foster kid myself 10-15 years ago, the trauma stays with you forever when you see being taking away from your mom(or parents).. and that is why This mother “Comforts” these kids by letting them get whatever they Like

THIS!! As someone who was in the system from 14-18, even when ppl try really hard there is an emptiness and tbh an Uncomfortableness that’s just human nature when you are in somebody else’s home but in all my time I met one lady ONE who truly made me feel at home (even though it was only 1 night) & I’ll never forget her. I’m 37 now & I think about her often.

It’s true about foods, a child I taught who didn’t have a good home life is now an adult. She sees rice crispies cereal as a comfort because that’s what she usually chose from the breakfast cereals I always had on hand for hungry children. I refused to buy chocolate cereals for them, that was reserved for the week before Christmas only. Amazing what we find as comforting 💙

I mentored a kid in foster care from 12-18 years old. The foster care system totally sucks. When they need to shuffle kids to other homes they can show up unannounced to pick up the kids. They have a few minutes to grab their belongings. If clothes are still in the laundry, under their beds, back of a closet items get left behind. So a favorite book, teddy bear, shirt can get left behind. Kids can show up with belongings stuffed in plastic garbage bags and paper grocery bags. She went to four homes and constantly lost clothes shoes jackets. For an early birthday I bought her toiletries of her own in a plastic carrier like dorm students use when they use common bathrooms. So shampoos, conditioner, deodorants, brushes, combs, hairspray makeup etc. I told her to store in her bedroom so other kids didn’t use it or hide in their bedroom. You can’t believe how happy she was with a big bottle of her favorite shampoo! On her second move I let her choose a duffel bag so she didn’t look like a homeless person dragging a garbage bag around.
