So appreciate the share, we are now buying meat that is raised grass fed and grass finished. Eyes are open in all that goes into meat sold in stores compared to homegrown. We live in town so not able to raise our own but totally support those who do. Thank you for a great video

Happy Thanksgiving glad to see some of them made it. Home raised turkeys are the best. I hate the butchering but after the first one we did it proved worth it. And yes, grit is super important to turkeys because they will swallow everything they can get in their mouths. Also as a side note, not that it bothered me or that I don't do it too but a male, under a year old is called a Jake, over a year and it is a Tom. Females under a year are called Jenny, over a year and they are just hens.

Well done! Thanks so much for showing all of that! I want to raise my first turkeys next year and I'm going to try the Blue Slates. I really like how you make your own propane heater and turkey cone...amongst so many other things. I didn't know about those small refrigerators. Cool! I have been a vegetarian most of my life but have slowly started to eat meat and am starting my own farm. I have cows, pigs and chickens so far. My first piglets will be born right before Christmas. I only mention that because I really enjoyed bringing them Thanksgiving treats like you did, too. I cooked and ate my first turkey since I was ten or eleven years old (I'm 44 now). I got a 5.76 lb heritage turkey from the farmers market. Can you believe how small it was?!! But it was just right for this year and me learning everything. I think you got great weights on your birds. They looked beautiful and healthy. I also used a roaster like you did. Lots of fat came off my bird...the gravy has a big fat cap on it today. So interesting! It was a great experience for me and I can't wait to raise my own. Thanks so much for your beautiful examples always!

What a terrific video!! I live in an apartment but I sourced a 14-16lb heritage breed Turkey that was organic pasture raised and raised not far from where we live(despite us living in the big city) did I pay more for it? I sure did $95 and I had to pre-order it to be certain we got one and that’s why the pound isn’t exact because they don’t know exactly what each end weight will be. Was it worth it?!? OMG!! YES!!! Since I was a young kid every time my parents would cook a Turkey my allergies would go crazy from the minute you could smell the Turkey cooking I used to love the smell and the entire house would smell of the bird roasting all day in the oven but my allergies would plague me with difficulty breathing and runny eyes and nose. To the point I would have to go outside in the cold air to just be able to breathe even with allergy pills and ended up one year needing to use the EPi pen on me. My entire life was like that and even into adulthood. I could never eat the Turkey because I would always have a anaphylactic reaction. I was the only one in my family that suffered like this so I’d always get an All-beef weiner boiled up and that would be my meat(I know of all things!) I had the same allergy to chicken but it wasn’t as severe and on occasion I could eat chicken wit just getting hives in my mouth. One day we were at a local grocery store and they had these cooked chickens that were organic, pasture raised no antibiotics and just sounded and looked amazing so I picked one up because hubby loves his chicken! Well I tried it and much to my amazement I didn’t have any allergic reaction to it no swollen lips or runny nose or eyes, no throat closing nothing I was perfectly fine and the meat was incredible it didn’t even taste like what I thought chicken tasted like! So we repeatedly bought these special chickens and I never once had any reaction to them. I was blown away thinking I was over my chicken allergy finally at the age of 56! Then one day hubby was cooking some chicken wings in the air fryer and I was having an allergic reaction, we didn’t even think it was the chicken wings at first. It wasn’t until I was baking chicken breasts from the grocery store and I began having a reaction just to the smell my eyes and nose were running and I was sneezing it was awful. Since then we’ve had both grocery store chicken in our freezer and pasture raised organic no antibiotic raised chicken and they are packaged differently so I can tell them apart when I take them out of the freezer but when hubby does it I have no idea which kind he’s cooking because honestly I was beginning to think this allergy thing was all in my head! Nope it’s not it’s actually something that’s in the grocery store chicken either in the feed that the chickens are given when alive or something in the water when they are processed or something that’s in contact with them. I’ve got a severe anaphylactic allergy to fish and seafood so perhaps there could be some cross contamination?? Or maybe the chickens are fed fish parts? I don’t know but I can tell you I’ve never once had an allergic reaction to any of the chicken that is sourced from a reputable seller that sells or organic pasture raised chicken soooo we decided to pre-order a Turkey from Beretta Farms which is a family run farm north of where we live. Yes $95 may seem expensive but they delivered it to my door and I cooked it and I did something very similar to you with sage butter under the skin and in just three hours the bird was fall off the bones ready!! I have roasting forks that you slide under the Turkey and just lift but when I did that the entire bird just fell apart! I thought oh it’s going to be super dried out! But this Turkey was hands down the best Turkey I’ve ever eaten!! Absolutely no comparison to the dry sandpaper like slices that we used to cut off the turkeys when I was growing up. We got three dinner plates heaped with meat. One plate with dark meat and each breast was a plate heaped up plus the wings and legs! It was an incredible Turkey and I made more then a dozen individual meals plus there were an additional two sets of meals for a family of five. Then I used all the bones and made turkey broth and I turned it into the most incredible Turkey soup and I had 18 litres of Turkey soup! So for $95 we stretched that Turkey to its limits!! Tons and tons of food for our family and for all those people that I share the individual Turkey frozen meals with. My daughter said it was the best turkey she’s ever eaten and couldn’t believe how incredibly moist it was and that was after reheating it! I highly recommend if you are not able to raise a turkey yourself then try your best to find a farm in your area that just might be raising them and NEVER question the price they give you because trust me after watching what goes into raising and feeding these animals(thanks to your channel and homesteading channels) whatever the price is will never ever cover the energy and time the farmer puts in to it and you will feel sooo blessed and appreciative of that meat that you will make it stretch as far as you can. I think when you use every single morsel it’s a way to be truly thankful for that food. Anyway sorry just wanted to share that and just fyi I had no allergic reaction whatsoever when that Turkey was in the oven and when I ate it I had no reaction then either it was amazing. I didn’t even realize it 😂 until the next day when I said to hubby wow we cooked that bird and didn’t have to open all the windows and doors and air the place out (and freeze because it’s so cold here)when I cooked that Turkey!! No allergic reaction at all! So I’m thinking it’s gotta be something that they are feeding the birds or the antibiotics or growth hormones that’s causing my allergies. I may never know but we know for certain it’s only organic pasture raised chickens and Turkeys for us from now on regardless the price even if we have to eat a lot less to afford them. 🥰❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦

We harvested some Bourbon red turkeys this season. It was our first time we had someone come and show us how for future reference. I have to say that the turkey size was a little disappointing. I believe they were six month old males. And they weighed in at 13 pounds. We did have one white female. No idea what breed was. She weighed in 26 pounds. Much happier with that one. Next year it will be all whites. FYI we just hung them with zip ties to a cattle panel in the garden. No cones necessary. Actually the whole process was much more simple than I thought it would be. Needless to say we will be raising our own chickens and turkeys in the spring.

You need to be commended for your generosity. I noticed that your friends at Hollar Homestead that you gave one of your turkeys to them for their thanksgiving. Hopefully your feast was filled with gratitude and your Christmas will be filled with the hope that Jesus brings. For generations there was no such thing as a kill cone. As a kid we let them flop and our neighbor tied their feet together and hung them over a clothesline before cutting off their heads.

Question do you have any concerns of any chemicals leaching from whatever is applied to the barrel once it heats up? I’m just curious we thought about using a galvanized garbage barrel and use that barrel for only harvesting. My concern is is it gonna leak any chemicals once is heated. FYI we plucked by hand. It was very easy to do.

I do really think you are some beautiful turkeys even though we’re going to eat them I really appreciated your beauty. I wasn’t expecting their feet to be So-o black.. that was a bit of a surprise for me. I have great respect for your ingenuity and making the turkey cone❣️❣️I didn’t think it was going to hold off to be honest but it did and I didn’t give you any trouble throughout the “fixing” process of six turkeys!! VERY IMPRESSIVE❣️ I was also very happy to see your daughter helping both of you to clean and harvest the turkeys. There’s something about doing that as a family and, she in fact probably has been doing it for years but I just liked knowing that all of you were working together for Thanksgiving as well as future meals with turkey. I could tell when you took that first bite of turkey that it was super tender. The only thing that I think a lot of people would miss by cooking it in the large”Cooker” VS. in the oven and getting a nice crispy skin that is Golden brown…That’s for me I’ll take moisture over color any day. You look like you guys had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal and I’m like you I like to save my pie/dessert for later after the meal has had time to settle. My mom always has opinion that you have the desert right now WITH the Neil, but I was always too stuffed in my stomach doesn’t like to mix sweets and savory. I’d like to wish you all a successful turkey harvesting event that was unique on this farm and I think you did a superb job and I want to wish you a belated happy Thanksgiving. I’m only sorry I didn’t get to see this before Thanksgiving day. I love your channel and keep doing what you do so well. My father did a lot of repurposing on his farm to instead of just going out and buying things. The people that even if you have the money and just go and pay $80-$100 for the Turkey cone, to me you just prove to the world that it wasn’t necessary and you could have that $80 for something else!!!! God bless you all🙏♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Yes. I was told that the new algorithm is closing out subs and actually cancelled some channels that the AI deemed ' hate speech' don't know if it's true but I lost quite a few channels😕

Mr Jason, This was a very good Turkey video. That big turkey cone worked great for you. 👍👍

We raised our first turkeys this year too. We just had two female turkeys but we raised them for 6 months just because we were busy and we were enjoying them. One was 18 lbs and one is 20lbs. We had the little one for thanksgiving and it was amazing! Delicious! So much lovely fat and flavor. We would do it again for sure. Love from Cali! 🤙🏼
