We love Farmer Boy! It it also one of the most convicting books I’ve ever read on how lazy I am compared to Almanzo’s mother. We did the first Penderwicks together and then my kids listened to the others on audio books. My son has learned Latin and about Tolstoy just from those books.

A wise, homeschooling mother of 12 told me just a couple of weeks ago that all I need to do is listen to classical music. I know nothing about music, I don't play an instrument. So I was telling her I feel unqualified to teach about it to my kids. She said that explanation is not necessary, that we need only to listen to it regularly. So my plan is to play classical music every morning during waking up/breakfast time. If we become interested in a certain composer, I may see if there is a picture book at the library about him. 🤷 Mine will take piano lessons this year, but I think it's good enough to just listen to it! That may take you on learning rabbit trails you all enjoy!

Aaaaahhhh I LOVED All of a Kind Family as a kid! One of my all time favorites! Love Farmer Boy too! All the little house books are delightful! I've read them so many times and never tire of them! Reading them aloud to my kids now, too!

For music we have loved Music Appreciation by Zeezok. They have two levels, one for elementary and one for middle school. It is a bit pricey, but my boys enjoy doing the lapbooks, listening to the story of each composer, and all the little activities and compositions we get to listen to. I can understand that it might not be for everyone, but it fits well for our family. Other than that we do violin and banjo lessons with an actual teacher.

We've been using that Not Consumed curriculum as a part of our Morning Basket for 3 years! We LOVE it so much- but we go through it at much slower pace than we thought we would! And also, we signed our boys up for a homeschool music academy near us, because same. 😂

Great picks! I think you’ll have a great year. We love the new TGTB science units.- they are perfect for science if you want unit studies. We’re currently doing marine biology and my kids really like it. We’re also doing Our Star Spangled Story from Notgrass!

I'm doing the good and the beautiful science this year as well. I did not want to do it in the past because it was just way too much for me. Evan though I don't usually mine prep work, It was just too overwhelming for me, but this year since they revamped it, it seems much more manageable, especially when you have multiple children.

Looks like some great picks. We are using Notgrass also, we are doing America the Beautiful. Love your read aloud picks! Something simple you could do for music is read them “A Child’s Introduction to the Orchestra” by Robert Levine, it’s part of a series of books with fun topics for kids. I am currently reading the Art version with my son and we are enjoying it and I plan to read the orchestra one next. It’s something that’s fun and not a lot of pressure, but exposes children to the topic in a fun way.

I have a 1st and 3rd grader. I also have a music degree….and I don’t teach music 🤦‍♀️🤪🤣 but we do listen to music if all sorts, have some picture books about instruments and some composers, and have used little Einsteins dvds and did prodigies music online classes two years ago to teach some basic rhythm and time. I like the idea of doing more, but I’m also trying to go with the interest of my kiddos. No stress mamas! Unless your state requires it, there’s no reason to stress if you have curriculum or just play music from time to time. 😅
