I was molested from a very young age...I can't remember when it started, but I sure remember when it stopped. I was five, realized I didn't LIKE what my molester was doing, so I started saying no. He said "I bet your sister will be nicer to me than you're being." My sister was ONE YEAR OLD. I made it a point to never be alone with him, and I made sure my little sister was never alone with him. My mom realized it, and one day while pulling clothes out of the dryer, she asked me why I didn't like being around him anymore as she took the clothes into the house. I told her flat out, "because when he kisses me, he sticks his tongue in my mouth." I'm 58 years old now, and I still remember the way she dropped the laundry basket. Best thing was she didn't question me at all. (When I was an adult, I asked her why she believed me right off, she said, there are things a five year old doesn't say. That was one of them.) She told my dad, who didn't question it at all. Long story short, my molester ended up dumped in the parking lot of the charity ER, beaten to a pulp. Having parents that believe you is so important to a child, boy or girl. Pedos rarely discriminate.

But when they told my grandmother she handled it the exact wrong way by telling them to stop lying. And she stayed with him until he left her for a younger woman. That black cloud is still hanging over the family today, even though the man has been dead for about12 years, and my grandmother for 37 years. Things like that you just don't forget.

This is really good writing as it is hard to have a scene that covers a very serious subject, and yet still have enough humor that it isn’t too serious where it comes off awkward. Family Ties did this a lot on the show and usually succeeded when they wanted to broach a serious subject.
@Nati4Truth3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! That what I have been thinking too, since I ve discovered this show just 6months ago.. Family Ties also has its Heart in everything in every issue they bring up. Alex is Ctually quite sensitive caring brother but doesn't show it often, and Mallory isn't dumb as people think or see, she is just more lazy on subjects she doesn't concern about, but also very empathetic, caring and hardworking when its needed. Everyone is so multidimensional, the same way the whole show! Its funny, it makes you cry, and honest, bringing up sensitive issues people don't talk about, and kindness, it teaches you a lot! This Show is a Treasure, which is so underrated and lost in years.. I'm happy I found out about this one. Low budget of the show, using few actors for different roles even don't spoil a bit or make less of a quality of the show. Because the content, the heart and mind, and giving performance of each actors - what matters the most. Its unique show, sadly not many people know about it or appreciate it. Its not a glamorous Hollywood show, maybe that's why. Anyways, grateful for the show and happy to see our lovely community 💗

Honestly I strongly disagree, there’s nothing funny about sexual harassment involving a minor. But somehow the writers made jokes where Mallory getting harassed is the punchline. Like when Mallory goes to Alex for help and he pretty much gaslights her and says she’s overreacting. He tells her Arthur used to bathe her when she was little and Mallory says “I think he wants his old job back”. The laugh track makes it even more uncomfortable. It doesn’t help that Arthur basically got no damn punishment either. Elise doesn’t tell Steven about it until it’s being broadcasted live and they have some half assed talk with Arthur back stage. No one calls the cops or even tries to kick his ass it’s just “oh I only did it twice idk what I was doing”. Whole episode was just uncomfortable asf and they didn’t do a good job covering the subject
@ladennayoung2939 Жыл бұрын
@frankjames1955 Well, acting as if certain things never happen and shouldn't ever be addressed is not good for anyone. People want to choose to stick their head in the sand like an ostrich and act as if something isn't an issue won't solve things either.
@CatEyedGoddess11 ай бұрын
This is still true today, I remember when a great uncle passed away and it turned out he was touching little girls in family for years, in ways they felt uncomfortable with. But ppl still brought their kids over his house. I myself was sexually harassed at work and talked to my supervisor about it. He dismissed my feelings, any female employee put in a complaint about the same coworker and she was ostracized and called a liar. When I said no he was inappropriate with women. I was dismissed as saying it only because we are both women. I learned that although corporate America has sexual harassment policies, you as the woman will be vilified if you speak out and most of the time nothing happens to the person who is inappropriate. I started my own business because of this culture.

A perfect example of how girls are taught not to trust their natural instincts. Uncle Arther did exactly what she said and meant exactly what she thought. True, this reaction is exactly what you can expect, human emotions are like this. She made the mistake to doubt herself, when you present doubt to another person they will doubt you as well. Maybe that should change, but it never really will if we are honest with ourselves. People choose to see the best in people, they pick the story they believe is true and want to be true. People also need time to deal with what they were told, too often people assume the other person can instantly draw the same conclusions. They cannot. It just does not happen. Best message is, you owe the world nothing. You feel uncomfortable, get out. Ditch the friend, avoid the family member or avoid the person that makes you feel this way.

Not true. Alex is in denial. Yes. Because this is someone he has known his whole life, and now he's being told something TERRIBLE about that person. No. We're shown in this episode that everyone in the family supports Mallory the moment they realize that it's true. Including Alex.

For those jumping on Alex on how he reacted, keep in mind that in episodes like this, TV writers often use characters to convey conventional attitudes/views. In this case, they likely used Alex to convey how relatives traditionally might react if another relative told them Uncle Joe was getting handsy: “Oh, well, you know that’s just how he is/it’s no big deal/you know he’s always been this way/etc.” It’s a common device. If you watch police procedurals, when they do episodes about social issues, if a lawyer or a cop suddenly gives a long speech that presents all the boilerplate on one side of abortion/guns/immigration, it’s likely the writers are using them as a delivery system.

Tom Hanks was not considered anything like "an all around god guy type actor" then. In fact, in his review of Splash, Roger Ebert said his and John Candy's roles should have been reversed since he was more likable. similarly, with Money Pit he said it would have been more funny if Hanks and Long were more likeable. It wasn't until Big that he got that reputation.

I completely agree. I was no Alex P. Keaton but I was a gifted kid born in 78 to very educated parents. I'm the youngest of 8 kids and my dad was in his mid 50s when I was born, wanted his kids to be world wise. We watched local and world news every night and discussed what was going on. We were well off but never raised that way and to this day I'm thankful as I actually know political history better than most politicians. Sometimes I think my dad passed at a good time (10 yrs) because he would be horrified at the world now.

Obviously the meaning of the clip was “See how everyone use to tell the woman she was making it up in their heads” Or “See how women used to misinterpret sexual advances, no matter what lines were crossed” Bottom line; just stop touching women without announcing intentions. Unless both parties acknowledge that’s what they want? I don’t know, it’s still a freaked up situation.
