If you're ever in a country bar and this song gets played, ... when he sings Hank why do you drink ..............the crowd yells "TO GET DRUNK" Why do you roll smoke ..................... "TO GET STONED" Why must you live out the songs that you wrote ................ TO GET LAID It's just one of those songs.

He is the son of the first outlaw of country music, Hank Williams Sr. Hank Jr. started his career off by singing his daddy's songs and songs that had the same sound and he got a lot os shit when he started to play is own style of music.
@robertanderson69292 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I remember the battle within Country Music and Hank Jr. was right at the middle of it. There was the old guard that held that you didn't smoke pot or at least you didn't admit to it. And you didn't sing anti-Viet Nam War or protest songs. Remember Merle Haggard singing "Okie from Muskogee" which starts out with "We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee" and talks about not having long hair and not burning draft cards and not protesting on campus. And I remember it was a big deal and the Grand Ole Opry refused to let a bunch of acts on during that time trying to hold the line against guys like Hank, Willie, Waylon and others. If you can find it on YT there's a clip of Merle Haggard singing "Okie from Muskogee" only this time he's singing it tongue in cheek and Willie Nelson comes out to help him sing. It shows how people and standards changed over time.

Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson are the most well known of the Outlaw County scene that got popular in the 60s and 70s. It tended to deal in the grittier side of life: drink, drugs, guns, murder. Both well worth a deep dive into, along with other outlaw artists. My favorite Waylon song is "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean".

He was alluding to two family traditions. The first being the well behaved proper way, the second being a bit the same as his father who was notorious for being loaded. Partially from partying, partially from serious pain. There is also great fan participation in this song. After each of the three lines in the chorus there is a fan response: Why do you drink? Fans: To get drunk! Why do you roll smoke? Fans: To get high Why must you live out the songs that you wrote? Fans: To get laid!

I love watching raw reaction, because it underscores things we don't know about one another's cultural backgrounds & places in our hearts & minds that've left room for assumptions & stereotypes & judgements (both ways); when really, if we took the time to get to know each other we'd find we have more in common than we thought. I think your assessment is true, the only important element that's missing IMHO, is that I think when H.W. Jr is singing about carrying on a "family tradition" he's referencing the fact that substance abuse is a "tradition" that was passed down by his father Hank Williams Sr. an alcoholic & country music legend, revered by country music traditionalists & his (father's) substance abuse in many ways was enabled by the same industry that's criticizing him.

Hank JR., called Bocephus by his dad and his fans, was/is a rebel in the Country music. Maybe not so much now, but in the 70s and 80s a lot of those in Nashville thought he should conform to certain standards, sing his daddy’s songs, but he did his own thing. Another Country rebel is Waylon Jennings and he was classified as Outlaw Country, as well as Hank JR.

@@peddytendergrass6845 The other way around , it was so successful , BECAUSE it was Outlaw . This was before the internet , and before the rise of Indie labels , and the major studios totally controlled the content . And Countrypolitian aka The Nashville Sound was the order of the day . Both the styles later known as Outlaw , and more Traditional , closer to Bluegrass roots were shunned . ( Insert long story about Willie Nelson walking away from RCA and ending up at Atlantic , and Waylon begrudgingly being given creative control to keep him from walking .) Wanted The Outlaws wasn't a Waylon album per se , it was group project of Waylon, Willie, Jessi Colter, and Tom Paul Glaser , individually and in various combinations .) It was not only popular with Country audiences , but heard on mainstream stations and popular with audiences that previously didn't listen to Country . Its success brought major changes to the record industry . Partly " Outlaw " became a new pigeon hole , but also partly more openness to more variety of styles within Country Music . As a matter of fine print and semantics , Wanted The Outlaws was the first Country Album that * Went * Platinum . 1975's Redheaded Stranger by Willie initially went Gold , but by 1986 was Double Platinum . But Wanted ! The Outlaws had a more imeadate impact . It had Four hit Singles , 2 Number 1 , a Number 2 , plus another in Top 40 . Stranger has enduring popularity to this day as an Iconic Concept Album , but only had one hit single , Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain ( #1- Country , #62- Pop ) .

Jr. used to be the spitting image of Sr. In 1973, the year he references in the song, he got drunk and fell off a cliff in Montana. Many surgeries later, plastic as well as medical, he looks like he does (quite a bit different than his dad), and grew that beard to cover some of the scars. By the mid-80s, he was one of the mainstays in what was called 'outlaw country,' along with Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. A few years later, they were perceived as the country music establishment. I remember an interview I saw once with Willie Nelson in which he was asked about that transition, and he said he was too high to notice it even happened, lol. Anyway, it didn't last long. By the early '90s, it was over.

He also covered Toy Caldwell's "Can't You See" on that album. There is a line in the song; goin' to find a mountain; highest mountain; goin' to jump off; nobody goin' to know. After the Fall, he had the greatest musical career come back in history, but they didn't dwell on those kind of stories much back then.
