It’s crazy how connected by blood all these people are. Cool to see Harold’s bloodline has made it this far.

Fun fact : Harold Godwinson is an ancestor of Ivan IV « the terrible » and Constantine XI, byzantine emperor who died in Constantinople during the siege of this one. Knowing this, we realise the huge and global impact of the Battle of Hastings. History is fascinating sometimes. 😀

Where did you learn this

Brilliant! I love royal genealogy, but I'm familiar with the basic stuff from William I onwards, & it's fascinating to follow more obscure & tangential lines, & to hear that the modern royals are descended from Harold, whom I've always thought of as unconnected to the main line of descent.

You really nail it with these videos. The story of English/Norman royalty would make a fascinating movie if done properly.

Very big project. We definitely need a trilogy of big budget movies on 1066, the Year of Three Battles. :D

Since Henry VII's queen, Elizabeth of York also descended from Edward III and their daughter, Margaret married James IV of Scotland through whom George I claimed the throne through his mother, Sophia of Hanover, her mother Elizabeth of Bohemia and her father James I, he being Margaret's great grandson, the present queen has at least one, and probably two, further descents from Harold Godwinson. (I have not looked into it, but she may also descend from him through her mother).

Very interesting, my father's name is Harold Goodwin, interesting to see how far back his first name actually goes back.

I've read that Queen Elizabeth & every monarch from Edward III to the present was descended via Harold Godwinson via his daughter Gytha of Wessex via her descendant, Isabella of France- mother of Edward III...

The Royal family is also related to the House of Cerdic through Henry Beauclerc’s wife - Matilda of Scotland, who was a granddaughter of Aethelred II.

My family's bloodline goes back directly to Aethelred the unready. I am slowly learning about our history.

It's pretty distant going through a female line into other ethnic groups etc Are there any more English relatives of Godwinson or any others with claims to the thrown from back in 1066 that missed out maybe?

Fascinating. One thing I've never been able to get into my little brain: how is Harold known as an "Anglo-Saxon" king? He seems to have no Angle or Saxon ancestry.
@HistoryHubChannel Жыл бұрын
He was half-Dane through his mother. Godwin was Anglo-Saxon, though he was heavily associated with Canute and rose to his powerful position through him.

In old english c by an e or i is a ch sound so Wulfnoth /Cheeld/ and /Eadrich/ Streona
@thevenbede7672 жыл бұрын
Other weird quirks of old english spelling is g by an e or i becomes a y sound while cg makes a hard j sound like in judge. So Grantabrycge (modern Cambridge) would be pronounced pretty close to its modern name
