People like these have no appreciation for money, you can rent a decent 2bd apartment in SF for far less than 7K, they just CHOOSE to rent in the most overpriced building in the city and squander their earnings. Also they can find a 3bd in many very walkable parts of the city or in nice areas oakland in that budget no problem, they just want the most sought after neighborhoods. Bay Area home prices are bonkers but you just have to manage your expectations and spend smart.

If you didn’t notice while watching the video, it was mentioned that the family is seeking “Silicon Valley dreams”. In case you didn’t know, Silicon Valley is the technology capital in the US... that being said, there is no other state that could offer a job that pays 500k/Year starting off, while doing what you love. With that being said, cost of living in SF reflects from opportunities which surround the area. I’m finding that their problem doesn’t stem from not having enough money, it stems from the fact that they were a little ignorant about the area before moving in. They should have took a little more time to research the essentials which would guarantee them a smooth transition. Not only is San Francisco not a state, like you claim in your comment, but it is one of the only options considering the dreams these people set out to accomplish. Minimum wage in San Francisco is literally more than double, than what it is in most other states. You’re correct, you can get a mansion for a million dollars in other places, but that means they’d have to downgrade their entire lifestyle to something they don’t WANT. When you’re busting your ass for your money, you’re going to go out and get what you want. California is literally, probably the ONLY state in all of US that could be considered a first world state, maybe that’s what they want.

The property tax alone on a $1.2 milllion dollar Bay Area fixer upper is around $15,600 a year. That's $1300 a month. On top of that you have mortgage, water, gas, electric, garbage pickup, fire insurance to pay. Then you have to pay huge bills for contractors to put the plumbing, electrical, heating, drain pipes, roofing in shape and maybe have to do asbestos abatement. If you do a certain dollar amount by building permit, the County may require you to update other things like install double pane windows and do seismic foundation bolting. Something tells me that we are on a speeding bus heading toward a cliff and the driver just died of a heart attack.

Seriously? No one gives AF about these people. Let's shed the stupidest single tear we can for them because they have ONLY a million dollars to spend on a house. The whining in this country has gotten unbearable.

Of course these people are programmers and want to live the high life in SF. I am a programmer myself and its people like this who listen to anything to live in silicon valley. Not worth staying broke i know programmers who make 250k in SF anf they are broke that poverty. Its insane.

making 250k and being broke ?!?! wow thats crazy
@sybrix6 жыл бұрын
How are they broke on 250k? I honestly don't understand how anyone is broke making six figures in SF. Either they have no idea how to budget and go out every single day for lunch/dinner/coffee/drinks or they have a coke problem lol.
@justshady4 жыл бұрын
sybrix simple. 250k - 30% tax = 170k living in a 7k/month condo = 86k let’s not even start with car payments food etc...

Born and raised in SF. This city has lost its way. Techies are to blame. Homeowners are to blame. Lawmakers and their laws are to blame. Foreign buyers are to blame. Everybody's rooting for another major earthquake in SF, myself included. Just don't hit when my family or I are in the city.

First world problems. “Their budget is only $1.1 million. They’ve been looking for more than 4 months. The home ended up selling for well over $2 million.” Oh the struggle for this poor family. Even the news is silly and pretentious in San Francisco. Median home price in US is still $200,000. Move to a different area like Minneapolis, take a lower paying job and live your life. People want to live near water. It’s expensive. Get over it.
@ericcerqueira89004 жыл бұрын
Why don’t they just move outside of San Francisco?
@Bonanzoo4 жыл бұрын
Eric Cerqueira exactly. Buy something for $500k in Sacramento that’s comparable to something for $1 mil in SF. Buy a Tesla and autopilot to work and back everyday 🤷🏽♂️
@hooby70453 жыл бұрын
I mean Seattle is pretty expensive, but if these millionaires are going to come and make the prices high. Then I guess its time to buy a house while its still about $800,000 for an average house. That price is pretty high but give it a couple of years and garbage will start costing 2 million dollars just like in San Francisco.
@Butter-gz4kb4 жыл бұрын
Commute an hour to work; SF is congested, crime riddled etc. Buy a nice home in a nice area to raise your child.

@14thegr86 жыл бұрын
Then don't live in San Francisco for God's sake. Thinking that people should be able to get anything even though they cannot afford it is absurd. I cannot afford to live in a new york apartment with central park views or buy a San Francisco mansion, the answer is simple, I live where I can afford to live. The idea that there is any city that is or will be "the city for everyone" is ludicrous.

I don't feel bad for them. Just like the state, they have a spending problem. It'll get worse when the childcare costs start coming in. "Minnesota is too cold." Put on more layers or work from home. You're gonna subject your kid to this because you can't put more layers on. 🤦♂️ My freaking generation man feels so entitled and are wusses. When I lived in Seattle I worked in a tech company based out of SF doing a non-tech role. Great people to work with, but I was a little shocked that even though these people were well off and were good at what they did, the basic things they had trouble with. Not all of them, but a lot of them. They were intelligent specialists at what they did, but not jack of all trades for sure. One guy like to tinker with stuff and had a hobby with hardware while knowing software and was very modest. He knew what was up.

you should find a place for less than $1 million. go look at the sunset area. as ridiculously high as san francisco is, and it is, you can buy a place for that amount of money. i'd say they have expensive tastes. $7000/month on rent? there are tons of places you can live in sf for less.
@sybrix6 жыл бұрын
Right?? It's like they chose the most out of touch people to inflate the story. Housing in SF is over a million but like... just literally shift your focus in either direction in the bay and I'm sure they'd be able to get a house just fine. Last I checked there were downtown apartments for half that, they must be living in the most expensive apartment in the city.
@acalisweetheart80074 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about the sunset district? Like in the avenues where Abraham Lincoln high school is? Those homes used to be affordable not now I mean I guess if you got 1 mill you might be good

"We need to buy a home to save money". What kind of stupid statement is that? I hope this couple already made some calculations of how much it actually cost to buy a house. Don't be house poor just because you want to "save money". Have emergency funds ready in case something happens, especially with a new born baby. If something in the house breaks, YOU are responsible. Not to mention taxes and other unforeseen maintenance. Good luck!
@kansasthunderman17 жыл бұрын
Most homeowners don't have earthquake insurance and if there is a severe quake, contractors will be charging what the market will bear. That means that many owners will go bankrupt or they'll have to sell at a huge loss.

@richlandzee86866 жыл бұрын
Charlesbjtown - I own my house outright thank you. Renting and buying a house has its advantages and disadvantages. Just stating the fact that a house is one of the most or the most expensive "investment" you will ever make. Make your decision carefully before you sign on the dotted line.
@LucasFernandez-fk8se6 жыл бұрын
Richland Zee that's the truth if u don't buy a house to save money your rent goes up just like what happened to the last tenant of the apartment and they will end up moving back to Minnesota
@4touchdowns1game296 жыл бұрын
a mortgage is a huge loss though if the market crashes. which appears to be the case in san francisco. prices are higher than ever. people are buying properties for the sole purpose and hype of rising prices, this will all come crashing down. yes prices will still be high. but nothing like they are now.
