Spirit (Matt Damon) is able to connect with a human for the first time ever after meeting Little Creek (Daniel Studi). This is the story of him bonding with Little Creek's Native American family and friends.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002) follows the adventures of a wild and rambunctious mustang stallion as he journeys through the untamed American frontier. Encountering man for the first time, Spirit defies being broken, even as he develops a remarkable friendship with a young Lakota brave. The courageous young stallion also finds love with a beautiful paint mare named Rain on his way to becoming one of the greatest unsung heroes of the Old West.

One thing I absolutely love about this movie is how they contrast the cruel methods of riding done by the Americans versus the Natives. They don't demonize horseback riding in itself, but highlight how there needs to be love and care put into it so the rider can bond with their horse rather than use it like a tool.

They are not English men they are Americans, this is The US cavalry of the long war against the natives and this is set between the 1860s and 1870s probably a few years after The American Civil War and during the times of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, not the 1760s and 1770s during the time of The French Indian War and The American Revolution.

Stereotypes were part of the propoganda. You can't empathize with a people if you paint them as "savages" and "brutal". All atrocities toward natives everywhere in the world stemmed from greed first, which mmade them want to justify it by a sense of superiority: they are "savages" and we are "educating" them, making their lives "better". I won't deny that colonialism didn't have its own benefits; but instead of wiping away the native culture and beliefs, and making them feel shun away their own roots, it would have been better to have a healthy give and take of culture and beliefs.

This movie has so much deepness, from the native Americans being accepting and knowing best for the animal, to spirit being ornery/untrusting at first and becoming obedient, he stood up for others, wanted to be apart of things that reminded him of family (which helped him become more obedient) He has trauma from being ridden, so of course spirit accepting little creek was always a huge moment / from the sound to the facial expressions. The fact they never talk- very expressive , FREE! This movie is something so so special- The fact he was closed minded before, then learned about rain and her life, all so brilliant. Forever first favourite movie fr

I have a copy of the movie and have seen the extras...the animators were really struggling with how to make the horses emote and the eyebrows were their solution. it's really clever actually, I use this movie as a reference for my own way of drawing horses because the anatomy is accurate and simplified. Slow paced part of the movie. but also really enjoyable, if you think about the significance of this whole section of the movie. Aside from the obvious were spirit grows to love rain, Little Creak and the tiny toddler also teaches spirit not all humans are bad, and some will even respect his wishes of wanting to be free. And him spending time with the natives also sort of taught him the concept of patience more so. The closest thing the newer properties involving the Spirit franchise has come to inclusion of Native Americans, would be the occasional hinting, or at least rare evidence that Free natives are still around during timeline of spirit riding free. And I suppose you could argue the main character herself, considering I think she’s white/Mexican. Which depending on who you ask does count as Native American inclusion. Also we do have some inclusion of Mexican culture periodically. But as I say, depending on who you ask her character is hit or miss as it relates to whether or not she’s acceptable as Native representation. April 27 2023

They did such a great job on this movie, as a horse person the ears tell everything and the animators also did great on the facial expressions of the horses, you know exactly what they are saying without thr horses even talking. My only complaint is when baby Spirit licks the water (horses suction when they drink, they dont lap like a dog). Other than that its a great movie and depicts Natives in a positive way. Love it ❤

Because Natives tamed horses as well. The way we did it and how we made them live was considerably different than Americans but we did capture and break wild horses all the time. It was a very lucrative market. Horses would be sold or traded mostly to Americans, Canadians or the Northern tribes cuz it's too cold for baby horses to survive up north during the winter

They are endemic, in that they are found throughout the continent. Endemic is not the word you want. Better to ask if they are native or introduced. The answer is not clear. Horses seem to have first evolved in the Americas before spreading to Asia. It was thought they died out in America and was reintroduced by Europeans, but there is evidence for them in some places before white explorers arrived.

Am I the only one who at least didn't like Rain when she got mad at Spirit even thought it was to defend Little Creek because Spirit was aggressive towards Little Creek and why wasn't Spirit mad at Rain in return? Spirit had a good exuse to not trust Little Creek at first and only wanted to be free again after his first human experience with the colonel and his men and had a herd and mother he missed and wanted to return back to, wouldn't Rain acted wild like Spirit if she was a wild as well and atleast had the same experiences with other humans like the colonel and his men. That the indian village kept Spirit in the indian village and won't let him go yet reminds me of when the Radiator Spring townsfolk wouldn't let Lighting McQueen go before he had fixed the road he accidentily destroyed and Lighting McQueen and Rain reminds of Spirit and Rain from Pixar's Cars.

Horses are not native to the Americas, Horses are native to Eurasia. However, Europeans brought horses to the Americas where they traded with Natives who did not have any other rideable animal.

it says in the movie that they’re Lakota… just saying “native americans” is erasure

how is this erasure? if you read the description, it gives the movie description and has the word "Lakota" in it. its a KZbin video, they use buzz words in the title to get views?? shocking. Lakota ARE Native American people! they fall under the Native American umbrella?! hello? my family is Cherokee, I dont tell them the specifics unless they ask. I just say "I have Native American family". go be mad somewhere else.

@mikeyquinn2254 yes! most people who watch this are not going to remember the specific tribe, and how is it erasure when Lakota people also fall under the category of Native American?? thats like getting mad at me for calling a python a snake. yes, a phyton IS a subset of snake, but just because i broadened my diction doesnt mean i changed the meaning entirely like, bruh.
