Yep, you have to identify some relatives on each side, but then it can identify others for you.

Thank You for your Videos!! I have just gotten my Y test back and I am totally stumped! I first did my Ancestry DNA which pointed towards an NPE a few generations back (yet recent enough that I knew one involved)... I had several close unknown matches..yet none on a line that I had researched for 30 years. All of these unknown matches were related to each other. This and other info supported the NPE event theory. Now my dilemma. Today I got back my Y DNA results hoping to prove or disprove the NPE theory. Yet none of the Y matches seemed to match the NPE surname, although of the 15 Y matches.. there were 3 different surnames that showed up more than once. Of these, two were at the 1 Genetic Distance rating. I am really stumped by the results of the Y DNA!! Any thoughts or Ideas would be greatly appreciated. These tests have called into question 30 years of research!

What you may have is a series of NPE events within a group of people. The actual surname, may or may not be one of the ones in your list.

You need to use their chromosome browser and then download the segment data as a csv file.

Hi, i am coming from Balkan, actually Bosnia and Herzegovina. And i made some research on the net about DNA results that are offered on the market. Some of them are offering very basic infos and your company is offering a lot more. For example, i see people from Balkan and their results at myharitage and that is 80-90% Balkan, rest is North Europe, and that is end of story. I mean that is not satisfaction. And interesting to mention is that Balkan has old genetics, so Europe is having matching with us but people think they had grandma on the North. So i like to see deeper look into it. For our countries i would like to find some affordable solution, because we had war. And still today we have a lot of discussion between people because they think they are different, mostly because of religion belief. Our faces are similar, so i think we have same genetics, religion is brought to us. That information would be crucial if can make some collective testing in former Yugoslavia countries.

I transferred raw data from Myheritage to Family tree dna. The numbers seem a little off and some of the countries are different

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. If you're trying to determine how you're related, that involves using triangulation and a variety of other tools. If you're trying to do something more technical, then you'll want to reach out to the FTDNA support staff.

I had my father’s Y-DNA tested and at the 67 marker test he has a genetic distance of 1 with one person. We have a brick wall for the my 2nd ggfather of my male line. The person my father’s 66 of 67 markers match is a family whose farm was very near my 3rd ggmother (the mother of my unknown 2nd ggfather). My hypothesis is that my 3rd ggfather is from this family line. How do I prove or disprove this hypothesis?

A mtDNA test might show a known native american haplogroup as long as the ancestry continued to follow the matrilineal line.

Hi Andy, I’ve just received back my FTDNA 111 marker test and have nobody who match with me. However, at 67 markers I have matches but don’t share the name surname as me. One of the matches matched with me who had taken the 111 marker test but now don’t match with me and my 111 marker test...why is this? Hope you can answer this question for me. There must have been enough differences in the extra 44 markers to make it so that your match at 67 was not a match at 111

FT DNA has certainly done some drastic changes. The Page that Andy is on (0:55) has been changed - a lot!!!! The Family tree link is no longer at the top. Now it is at the Bottom!!!!

Ancestry is said to have the largest database for North America, and My Heritage for Europe and Jewish ancestry.

MyHeritage does have a different market and customer base that Ancestry. However, I would recommend people be in both since it's easy. Test with Ancestry and transfer your DNA to MyHeritage (for less than the cost of a DNA test). Then you can be in both.

It means that you have no differences between yourself and the match. A genetic distance of 0.

I have watched hours of HFH videos and there is something that I just don't understand. The tools are kind of fun, colorful, and interesting; but they don't really help me build my own Family Tree. Are people engaged in DNA research primarily interested in identifying their closest "cousins" and grabbing their email addresses? I want help building my Family Tree.

DNA is a tool that can be used to help build a family tree. It is rarely useful without traditional genealogical records.

I recently got the results of a Y DNA test which had been requested on behalf of a relation or mine. I have offered to administer the results by linking them to my own FTDNA tree. The email gives the following instructions: Login to myFTDNA account Click on myFTDNA in top left corner and find Y-DNA menu From Y-DNA menu select matches WHEN IF DO ALL THAT I JUST GET THROUGH TO ADVERTISEMENTS FOR BUYING MORE TESTS Could you possibly help me with this? I have also tried to upload the results to GEDMATCH but it asks for a file from my computer??? How do I use the kit number to create a file on my pc??? Thank you in advance for any assistance....it is a long time since I did my own test so I have forgotten what procedure I used.

How come in Chromosome Painter there are two sides to each chromosome, but in Chromosome Browser there is only one?

In Painter, it is showing you both your maternal and paternal chromosomes and the ethnic distribution estimate between them. In Browser, you are comparing yourself to another person and likely you only share DNA on one side of the family, so only need to show 1 chromosome.

I started on Ancestry before I found out years later about Family Tree DNA. Wish I'd known about FTD beforehand. Ancestry doesn't really show you a whole lot, def not in comparison.

Great video, but one comment about the earliest "known" ancestor. I'd take those listed ancestors with a block of salt; a big chunk of those are wrong. Too bad people aren't required (or even allowed) to document how they reached their conclusions.

Actually, that is not grammatically accurate across all English speaking cultures. The words “great” and “grand” are synonymous when you go that far down your family line, so it’s possible to hear “grand-uncle” used as well as "great-uncle."
