As a teen in the late 60s I was very fortunate to have seen Mitch Mitchell playing with Jimi Hendrix on 2 separate occasions. Hendrix would remain as one of my favorites guitar players and Mitchell was and is still one of my all time favorite drummers.

Mitch Mitchell was a seriously great drummer with a jazz background. I think I remember even seeing Ginger Baker talk positively about him, and Ginger hated just about everybody other drummer in rock.

Mitch Mitchell is one of those drummers that is so incredible in how his style is super flashy but really understated beneath the constant fills and movement around his kit. When I was a kid playing drums I always tried to mimic his fills and use my toms more cause that's all I understood about his playing. The older I get and the more I listen the more I'm amazed at the depth and technical ability that he played with. He's one of the few and first drummers that combined that jazz/fusion style of super solid fundamentals and really technical drumming with the raw sound and chaotic aggressive style of psychedelic rock.

I was always blown away by how Mitch controlled the atmosphere and sound level of his playing. The control it takes, especially while playing a rock based groove, is incredible. Playing low level and gently then just a massive spike in energy and sound levels…while never changing the speed or tempo etc. Mitch Mitchell truly phenomenal

I'm 73 and I saw Mitch when I was home in Cincinnati during spring break 1969. My girlfriend had bought tickets and Hendrix performed at the Xavier University Field House with Soft Machine as opening act. There were maybe 500 people in the audience. I was blown away when they uncovered the wall of speakers, but even more blown away by Mitch Mitchell's playing. He was a phenomenon. Not at all drowned out by the guitars. Hendrix was great, Mitch was greater.

Mitch was a demon behind the kit, and easily makes my top five of all time, but so many others played in that jazz style. Baker and Wyatt to name but two. How many guitar players could elevate you like Hendrix did? Both remarkable at their craft, but Mitch wasn't 'better'!

It’s obvious you weren’t alive in the ‘60’s. Mitchell was held in as much awe as Hendrix. The entire band was highly revered. You’re right about how he was the perfect drummer for Hendrix. No one could have done better. Noel was the perfect bassist as he didn’t compete with Hendrix or Mitch. He just kept the backbone steady so those other two could go wild without the whole thing turning into chaos. It was an amazing thing to see that original band live.

Nowadays he's proportionately very underrated compared to other rock and roll drummers. People will talk about, and argue over, John Bonham, Neil Peart, Ginger Baker..... and Mitch Mitchell's name won't even come up. He's become under-appreciated and nearly forgotten about nowadays.

He was my #1 when I was learning how to play in high school, so creative and tasteful and dynamic and PERFECT for Jimi's endless grooves. Countless monster riffs, I don't think there's one of their songs that you couldn't instantly recognize from the drums alone. He's still in my top 5 (in rock and roll) along with Bonham, Moon, Ringo and Copeland.

I saw them in the summer of 1969 at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport CT, and they played “Are You Experienced”… it was amazing to me because it sounded exactly like the record, which isn’t something I expected or cared about in a live performance, but I thought that song had a lot of overdubs and backward tapes and here was this trio recreating all the sounds, without any (obvious) extra equipment.

@@nets1776 I went there with 3 friends, July or August ‘68: we walked up the road to a diner and the guy behind the counter said, “Yous here to see ‘da Creams’?” He had no idea why we were laughing… I sat alone behind the band so I could watch Ginger Baler’s playing, and held my breath as Jack Bruce (leather jacket with a black fleur de lis on the back) sat across from me during Baker’s solo. Remember the opening act? I can’t remember the band’s name… They did a great version of “A Day in the Life”, including the orchestral crescendo, all with feedback and distortion. Impressive to a 16 year old, anyway…

It was right after "Hush" had become their first big Hit. Those were the very best times for music, the music of today, even Polyphia or anybody just SUCKS by comparison!

I had the privilege to see Mitch play in the Experience Hendrix show at the Paramount in Seattle the night before he passed away. I noticed he struggled to climb the drum riser. He played a short set, but still had the chops!

When I was a teenager I started playing guitar after seeing Gimmie Shelter, but then I found the Jimi Hendrix Experience and said oh hell what's this!! And even though I was focused on Jimi's guitar playing I couldn't help but notice the drumming. I would think this Mitch Mitchell is damned amazing!! It's like he and Jimi were spiritually connected and brought together by the Universe. I'll never forget the first time "I heard I Don't Live Today" those drums just killed me and I've been a fan of Mitch since--and he's definitely at the TOP of my list of drummers!!

From the first time I heard him on the "Are You Experienced" album, Mitch was my favorite drummer. I think that Hendrix played his best with Mitch; they fed off of each other to build the energy and excitement level of the music. Saw him in 68 with Hendrix and they tore the roof off. I never saw another show that blew me away like that one. I don't think Jimi would have busted onto to the scene like he did without Mitch. He had been around for a while with other guys, but without Mitch pushing him, he would have just been another guitar player making wild sounds. They were a perfect pair.

In my opinion, the best coin toss "win" of all time was Mitch Mitchell. The other side of the coin was Ansley Dunbar, which is a very respectable choice, but Mitch just complemented Jimi's style of playing perfectly. Good video, thanks!

Ansley Dunbar was a far better drummer than Mitch Mitchell. I saw Journey Open up for ELP in 1976 when Journey was still a progressive rock band. Next to Carl Palmer Ansley Dunbar was probably the greatest drummer I've ever seen.

I was a drummer years ago and Mitch Mitchell was one of my favorites. I discovered the Elvin Jones connection when I saw a crazy film, Zacharia (An Electric Western). In the film Elvin Jones played the part of a Sheriff. He has a gunfight in a saloon then jumps on a stage and plays a drum solo.. Hearing his solo I said that sounds just like Mitch Mitchell

I Bought the 'Are You Experienced' album during May 1967. For me it was jaw dropping I had never heard anything like it. Apart from Jimi's Guitar work I was immensely impressed by the drumming. Mitch was instantly promoted as my favourite drummer. My other co favourite Drummer is Ian Paice of deep Purple, one of the few left handed drummers around. Also should mention Trevor Morais of the Peddlers. I only saw the Hendrix Experience once November 1967 unfortunately. My favourite Hendrix track, too many to name. My favourite Mitch tracks would be Manic Depression, 3rd sone from the sun and fire. Other tracks that come to mind where Mitch stood out are, Stone free using a cow bell to supplement the beat, Burning of the midnight Lamp, intro to Little Wing and Voodoo chile slight return. Probably others that dont come to mind straight away.

Yes, I did see Mitch play with the Jimi Hendrix Experience on a rotating stage in the Spectrum in Philadelphia. What amazed me was when they came out Mitch started playing and never stopped the entire set which meant that even in between songs he jammed by himself. He played a solid 2 hours without stopping. It was amazing to see. Ill never forget it.

I remember growing up my father always saying "Jimi Hendrix's drummer was just as great as Jimi" and into my teens I picked up the guitar and have been obsessed with Jimi and the Experience ever since. I 100% believe Mitch was one of if not the greatest drummer of his time and still to this day one of the greatest of all time. His ability to mold the song with his drumming and launch Jimi into other dimension and his ability to follow Jimi like a shadow all just some of his greatest strengths. I highly recommend anyone interested in hearing Mitch's full range and musicality to listen to "1983 (A Merman I shall Turn to Be...)" off of Electric Ladyland. Listen to this song and just hyper focus on Mitch thru the whole journey the song takes you on. Mitch's musicality is on full display and just as impressive as Jimi's guitar work, Mitch doesn't play the drums like a simple percussion/rhythm instrument, his plays his kit like a piano or any melodic instrument... His ability to perfectly compliment the mood, the energy, the direction and destination of the overall song is imo incredible. RIP Mitch ❤ RIP Jimi ❤ RIP Noel ❤

I saw Mitch with The Experience in New York in 1968, I also went to see Ramatam in Asbury Park New Jersey back in 71 ( ( I think). He was great to watch live back then. Very influenced by Jazz especially Elvin Jones. Mitch was great to watch and a great part of the Experience sound. He brought the Jazz style to the Experience. Mitch and Jimi and Noel will live forever on those first three albums. Buddy was a different drummer for Jimi and equally as good of a Drummer but in my book Mitch was Jimi's Drummer.

Mitch lived near us in Sussex. He sometimes played the guest slot at our village hall, and would solo for 20 minutes. His playing was phenomenal. A friend was learning the drums and Mitch gave him a very well used Ludwig Drumskin which I now have, after it was split. I have kept it since 1972, but it will sadly be in the bin soon.

My grandmother let me use her front room and I would play and the people would dance on the sidewalk in front of the house. All of the albums were my favorite. Still are.

Yes. I was right in front of Jimi, July 30 or 31, 1968, Baton Rouge, La. I could watch Mitch to my right. He was very laid back that night and didn’t play all the stuff I knew he could play. No mics on the drums! I hated that!!! The natural maple Ludwig’s. What struck me as a drummer is that he played within himself, ie, not trying to “fight” Jimi’s amps…..he would have lost…….but just very smooth and natural and relaxed. Such a great, fantastic drummer……an inspiration for sure! Thanks so much for the post.

As a lead guitarist.. I always thought Mitchell as my favorite drummer of all time - my opinion.. I may get crushed by modern drummers or drummers in general but what a radical and unique approach to the instrument

That’s what made the best English drummers from the 60’s so good. They all grew up during the Jazz era when it was still the most popular form of music. Bonham, Moon, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Charlie Watts all had roots in Jazz

Mitch is the best. I saw a drummer called John Hummel at the 100 Club in London many years ago. He is the nearest to Mitch I have ever heard.

As a kid, not really knowing all that much about music apart from what I liked I always thought Mitch was spectacular. Decades later, knowing a bit more about music in general I’d say my earlier inclinations were spot on. He was very captivating and to be that on a stage with Jimmi? Wow.

I grew up in the '60s, as a young drummer when I heard Mitch I recognized he was doing something different, the difference was Mitch could swing his ass off. Listen to anything he did with Hendrix "Hey Joe" is a perfect example. Mitch swings Hey Joe so hard, it's so inspiring. As great and innovative as Jimi was, I don't think there was another drummer who was as complimentary to Hendrix as Mitch. I think they were the original fusion band.

I think it was in Downbeat magazine that I read Hendrix’s response when Mitch played him “A Love Supreme”: referring to Elvin Jones’ drumming, Hendrix said, to Mitch: “That’s YOU!”

Have to keep in mind those days they didn’t have KZbin and social media to copy other drummers, getting 10x as good in half the amount of time. These guys put in hard sweat and labor on their own to get that good. Mitch deserves more credit than he gets!

I dig Mich too. My favorite Mitch moments are him wildly banging away when playing Wild Thing at Monterey. His playing on Machine Gun is rally good too at the Isle of Wight show.

Mitch was the first jazz drummer that ever left an impression on me. I, of course, had heard jazz in passing before Hendrix, but it wasn’t until I was older that I paid any attention to it.

For decades, my favorite "rock" drummers have been Mitch Mitchell and Clive Bunker (and yes I love Buddy Rich, John Bonham and countless others). But to hear that Mitch was the favorite drummer of Stewart Copeland and Nick Mason validates my adoration! I mean, the drummers of Pink Floyd and The Police? I guess I was spot on!

Back then all the great rock drummers had a jazz background Bonham, Mitchell, Palmer, Bruford, Collins. I remember someone saying to me you are always going to limit yourself if you can only play 4/4 rock and this can open you up to the greats like Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Papa Jo Jones, Philly Jo Jones, Joe Morello etc. All of a sudden Moby Dick and Manic Depression become a little easier to understand.

Mitch was Jimi's "pulse" if you will, the background drive behind Jimi's energy and musical visions. They were truly hand and glove. Was lucky to see/hear/feel the Experience twice in Chicago. Simply amazing.

I am not a famous drummer, but I am a drummer and Mitch Mitchell is one of my favorite drummers of ALL time. As an 8-year-old boy in the summer of 1967 my older brother came home from college with the Are You Experienced album. WOW! His drumming on Fire and Manic Depression hooked me forever. Still one of my favorite albums of ALL time. People that attempt to compare Double Trouble with the Experience are definitely not musicians. Chris Layton is not even worthy to carry Mitch Mitchell's jock.

In the extended live version of Spanish Castle Magic on the Hendrix in the West album Mitch sounds exactly like Buddy Rich and Gene Kruper at times.

One of the other great things about Mitch Mitchell is introducing James Marshall Hendrix...to James Marshall of Marshall Electric Guitar Amplifier's! Mitch worked at Marshall Amplifire's before and Jimi was wanting a larger sound. In Jimi's words when they got there "now it's time to meet the man who has my name!" Thanks to Mitch, James Marshall said "no other musician did more for the 'Marshall' Brand (Jimi's middle name coincidentally)...than Jimi Hendrix! Footnote: back pedaling to Mitchell's audition to fill 'Experience' was an equal nemesis of these last two drummers before the eyes of the management. He came by the name of Aynsley Dunbar ( later of Zappa, first drummer for Jefferson 'Starship', and I believe first drummer for Journey and studio sessions). Anyway everyone agreed these two drummers were so much alike someone made a comment like "you'd have to flip a coin!"...'AND'...that's exactly what they ended up doing! "Peace and love everybody"...as Ringo (82yrs looking 40) would say! Peace and love!

I saw Mitch with Jimi once 1968. Nick Mason 14 times with Pink Floyd ( 1970/77). Stewart Copeland once 1983. I had a ticket to see Stevie Ray in 1986 but I burned my hand that same day and was in the E R during the concert ( fireworks mishap). Thanks for posting this.
