Thank you for enlightening everyone about Al Jolson's efforts to recognize the African American community in his life. Many productions only show him in blackface and turn that into something that was not his intention. I never knew what he did to voice the plight of the black community and his aspirations for change and acceptance that all of us are children of God and equal in His sight.

I had the absolute delight of meeting Suzanne Pleshette many years ago in Pittsburgh. We literally walked into each other accidentally. After profuse apologies, we actually chatted for 30 minutes. She was fabulous - friendly, positive, honest to a fault, asked me about my life and career, and also asked me about local real estate prices; apparently she was looking to buy property here. When I told her how much I loved her work in The Birds and The Bob Newhart Show, she smiled with the most radiant beauty - I have never in my life been more impressed by someone as famous as her. And that baritone voice of hers was ohhhhh so sexy. RIP dear one.

It speaks volumes to how important Nimoy was to the Star Trek series that, when they were first starting production on the 2009 film, they straight up told him they couldn’t do it without him. Nimoy was one of the most genuine in Hollywood and we’re lesser without him.

When I met Leonard Nimoy, we discussed the Vulcan hand sign. I told him my pastor said the Jewish blessing at the end of the service-and I was Lutheran then. He smiled and asked, " Where do you think he got that from?" I'm Anglican Catholic and the Jewish blessing is also in our 1928 BCP. His book I Am Not Spock is next to his I Am Spock on my bookshelf. Where is Robert Vaughn buried? He too did not get to see his 84th birthday.

One of my many trips to LA was to visit the cemeteries. It was on of the most moving, interesting and unforgettable times that I had ever spent on the coast. It even beat having meals among many notable actors. Aside from visiting Marilyn Monroe's crypt and seeing where George Raft was interned, there were dozens and dozens of celebrities throughout the various locations. Many more than I could see in one day. Years ago a friend of mine told me to do that tour. I thought the idea was crazy. It definitely was not. I plan to do it again. So many memories.

My dad always used to say that the funniest man who ever lived was Jack Benny. There is a story that back in the late 40's he was invited to the White House by the Trumans. When passing through the front door he was stopped by a couple of Secret Service men who said they had to check his violin case for weapons or anything dangerous. When Benny assured them that it only contained a violin one of the security men dead panned "that's what we were afraid of." Benny reportedly laughed so hard he had to sit down.

I record the Jack Benny Program on ME TV, about everyday. That entire cast was what made that show funny. Mel Blanc (the voice of about ALL Looney Tunes Characters) and Benny we're GREAT friends, and he was on there ALL the time. He was friggin hilarious. So was Frank Nelson....it was a great show...a CLEAN...funny show, with CLASS. Something most of today's comedians would know absolutely NOTHING about. The Burns and Allen Show was awesome too. Hubby and wife George Burns and Gracie Allen. Alot of people don't know much about Gracie, because she passed away from a heart attack in 1964...but she was twice as funny as George. She was great!!

Great video. I grew up directly across the freeway from the Al Jolson monument and watched many funerals from the distance during the 60's and 70's (long before the Howard Hughes Center took up all the nice open space we called the "bean field"). After all these years however, I've never been in that cemetery, so thanks for the visit.

Arthur Dark continues to make the (818) proud with his stupendous creations. The splendor of Al Jolson's resting place is exceeded only by Arthur Dark's beautiful narrative. I continue to be impressed with Arthur Dark's extensive research as demonstrated by the wonderful facts he presents. Also, Arthur Dark has the unique ability to present each person with class and brings out the best from each person's career. Perhaps Al Jolson was the "greatest entertainer of his time." I regard Arthur Dark as the greatest creator of these type of videos. I look forward to Part 2. Shalom.

All people say “Well get back up and try again I do and get knocked down again and again. The Moral of the story is Never give up........ Excellent tour! It's wonderful how you add film clips and information about each person. I was lucky to have been alive when a lot of these people were still performing on t.v. so I guess I grew up with many of them. Your video is very well done and it reminds me of how lucky I was to have been able to see most of these entertainers in their prime.

a very interesting video. thank you for putting so much effort in making it. BTW that "jewish blessing gesture" is performed during "Birkat Cohanim" when the Cohanim (pl. of Cohen) bless the crowd in the synagogue during prayer. Nimoy himself as far as i know wasn't a cohen. I saw an interview with him where he told the story of how his father covered his eyes during the ceremony (it is believed that the spirit of God descends and enshrines the People of Israel during the act and there for it is forbidden to look at them while they perform it). If indeed he was a cohen his father had to be one too and perform the act himself. It is strange to see the symbol on his grave since it is only engraved on a cohen's tomb. Theodore Bikel's Hebrew writing on his graves shows he indeed was a cohen (his fathers name was Meir Ben Yossef HaCohen).
@NicoleCzarnecki
@NicoleCzarnecki 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe he found out that he was a kohen later in life. Also, I notice that Theodore Bikel had the kavod to include on his matzevah what others rarely include on their own: the name of the mother.

Cynthia Thomas I think they recognise the economics as well as an actor’s compulsion to act-you can’t fight nature-what they resent is the modern intrusion of obsessive fans who feel their devotion entitles them to invade the lives of those about whom they obsess.

Yes, Joan Crawford, Malcolm X, Aunt Hagatha from "Bewitched" and formerly Judy Garland who was about twelve feet from my family. Her grave was on floor level and usually always had Roses and a picture on the floor when she played Dorothy. However, I heard the family in 2015, 2016 had her moved to somewhere in California.

The Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. Frank Morgan, Leonard Bernstein, Joey Gallo and the biggest collection of Civil War Generals. The statuary is astounding. No one could afford to place monuments like them any more. It was designed by william Law Olmstead who also designed Central Park in Manhattan and Freedom Park in Charlotte, NC.It has a website and a big coffee table book of photos.

Al Jolson's will made no provision for a cemetery memorial. His last wife (widow) thought an entertainer of his stature needed something very special. She got a court order approving the use of money from his estate to have it designed and constructed. It cost about $75,000 in 1951. It did not include the waterfall. The cemetery itself constructed that, and paid for it out of cemetery funds. The memorial is illuminated at night. It is probably the most elaborate show business grave site in Southern California. When complete, and Jolson's remains transferred to it, Jack Benny was the principal speaker at the dedication.
