This video was SO funny, but you actually made a solid point with “I don’t understand how someone could have so little going on in their life,” like that’s literally it! You cracked the code! So many of these “experimental” pop bands are devoid of ideas, themes, and anything else that good storytelling requires. It’s like they’re making songs without knowing what a song is, or at the very least, what makes a song good. I love that you can make entertaining reviews while still dropping lines that make me think!! Keep it up, man!

It’s a common thing among young, amateur creatives without much life experience to misunderstand originality and throw together random ideas from other stuff they’ve seen/heard instead of drawing on life experience, and the result is art that’s distractingly haphazard in the details, but ultimately boring because the only experience they have to draw on is completely mundane. This is totally forgivable from amateurs, but it’s just so strange to see it from experienced musicians in their 30s

It kinda feels like hes purposely missing the point on some of these songs. Like he seriously says "who wants a song about blank" like I would rather have a song I can relate to rather than some random shit about partying and drugs and fucking. A more personal approach to the songs is more interesting than the general pop songs I normally here.
@michaelpowers4502

@@andrewrussell5312 That's true....BUT, they could at least make the personal songs more original. They keep making songs about mundane things that don't make anybody think of anything new, they're just relatable songs for basic things that everybody thinks about. It's fine if that's what people are in to, it just isn't very creative.
@crouton7297

@@andrewrussell5312 The moment that stood out to me was when he broke down the lyrics of Ordinaryish People and was sarcastically like “Wow, this is so profound.” I felt they did an alright job of explaining a feeling everyone faces at some point in their life. Not every song needs to be profound or can be profound. Sometimes a song about not feeling like you fit in is what you need to hear, even if it’s not an entirely unique or personalized perspective.

Their music has sounded the same since The Click. As a former fan the band is popular amongst people who haven’t listened to any other music besides mainstream stuff. Basically people who haven’t taken a deep dive into music and can’t really notice how horrible this is. I can thankfully say I’m a changed man… PRAISE THE LORD FOR GIVING ME BETTER TASTE

I think he'd appreciate Half•Alive's music much more. He may not love it, but they actually have something to say in their music and each song feels unique. Personally, I feel like even comparing AJR to Half•Alive is legitimately insulting to Half•Alive.

I feel like for Bang, they were drinking that energy drink. My spouse thinks this sing is premade to close a set. The spouse is currently addicted to AJR, and every time I have to fucking hear Bang, I want to bang their heads into concrete. But at least it keeps my spouse mentally on an even keel, and I can always put my headphones on and listen to whatever I want, which recently has been binging of Yungblud.

Unsolicited suggestion, but IMO a good song about "am I good enough to be doing what I'm doing?" is Hazy by Red Vox. A sligthly Tame Impala-ish mellow rocker about Vinny's genuine self-doubt about his musical project and entire career as an entertainer, it not only feels genuine, but also resolves rather positively. It's from their first album, What Could Go Wrong, you could check it out on stream or on your own time if you're interested.
