With the line “I believed in God back in ‘09, always f*cking b*tches at the same time,” AJR cleverly comments on religious hypocrisy, in addition to demonstrating a strong sense of self-reflection not seen on their previous projects. Superb. 8.6/10 - Pitchfork

@@coastercraziness or and hear me out dont let people steal other peoples work mess it up and say its better. at this point they took a college paper on the risks of bullying and or ignoring symptoms of abuse and changed it to show that todays people are too soft. it also is an example of how people today think a song needs to cuss and talk about drugs sex violence which isnt the case. so the point is you need to learn the difference between a joke and just insulting and calling it a joke.

I feel like there are ways to bring up politics in songs like this if your politics are actually a part of who you are. I know Pat the Bunny often made it work because his passion and values were core to the struggles he sang about, and he actually had something interesting to say around that. It all fit together well. When AJR does it it feels unfocused, as you said.

Glad someone said it. Genius stuff isn't always accurate. But yeah Ryan talked about how Joe is about someone that is a sort of Godly figure in your life that you look up to and even possibly take parts of your personality from. AJR had Rivers on a track so I reckon they did it in reference to a homage album name that is kinda lesser and odd (Ok Human) and then they come along and water down that line of references by being like we're going to forgo the connection of human or computer, just that not even know that line of thought, and were like Ok OrChEsTrA bEcAuSE wE gOT oRCheStRaL iNsTuMiNts

As someone who usually despises this group, listening to these reactions has been interesting in me trying to figure out what’s at all redeeming about what they do since their production ideas are interesting. Listening to more of their songs, AJR are far more suited to making hip hop beats for other people to rap on than trying to turn those beats into full pop songs on their own. When the drum loop is in and they’ve got their samples in there it can work, but I think how they choose to expand on it leading to a chorus or their verses and stuff just almost never works for me personally.

@@leethepigeon I think the tone is one of the most important parts of making this enjoyable like he's so non self serious. You should react to 16/04/16 by cavetown. It's one of my favorite albums of all time. I don't if it's necessarily something you'd be into but the genre is kind of pop-rock/alternative/indie rock/trap. I don't really know how to explain it but it's a pretty sick album. Cavetown's newer stuff is more indie acoustic/bedroom pop but a lot of his earlier stuff is more pop-rock type stuff.

@@toontales2479 he is though, the overproduction, the tacky samples and voice filters, the questionable lyrics, the lack of originality. Plus he was saying that he thinks this is probably their best work yet, he just still had many problems with it. There is no such thing is an objective view on music but at the same time he isn't just blindly trashing them and not giving the music a chance. I mean there are parts that he likes. Plus it's not just unbiased criticism, it's entertainment and presentation. Presenting requires personality and if he was to talk in the most neutral way about it would kill his personality. Even the projects he loves he shits all over and basically flat out insults parts he doesn't like. I think people just get too easily hurt by hearing brash, unfiltered, played up opinions.

just to address the simularity in the way less sad and bummeland melodies, the album has a motif, which is a melody played throughout different peices in different ways, so its intentional, and is usually what orchestras do, like how the avengers theme plays in every movie but is different but with that same melody

im going to be honest no other music gets me angry like ajr's. i feel they rely too much on trendy production to fix bad musicianship. the result lacks a strong musical foundation and a cohesive aesthetic to their sound. it's like they want to do all of the styles that have been popular within the past decade without considering their sonic compatibility and write lyrics that both clearly describe how they're feeling without going too far into artful songwriting.
