This is for those who don't know: the reason why the Czech Republic is mentioned many times in Hollywood media is that it serves as a cost-effective location for shooting exteriors and interiors of other famous European landmarks and cities, such as Paris, for years.

I think many English speaking people would find the Czech title of Breaking Bad funny, because it was introduced here as "Gingerbread Dad". The caveat is that Czech word for gingerbread, "perník", is a slang term for methamphetamine. It originates from WWII German brand name for meth Pervitin, which was used in the war by Third Reich soldiers.

What they say about the hostel in Prague offering a cell in which Vaclav Have was held is actually true. The key thing, though, is that he was only held there short-term for interrogation before being either released or jailed/imprisoned. The building where he had been held, which btw has an amazing history itself, was repurposed into a hostel after the fall of the iron curtain. The hostel kept a couple former basement cell rooms to rent in mostly original condition and eventually evolved into a very nice and highly rated "Unitas Hotel". I happen to know all this cause I worked there for some years and I gotta say I sometimes kinda miss the eerie feeling I used to get thinking of all the stories that building could tell...

As a czech person I was always really happy about the way they were talking about the Czech Republic in Gilmore girls! I have yet to know any other tv show that seems to have such nice, educated knowledge of our culture and the dialogue about the czech topics was always so dignified, it really seemed to me like the writers like our country and actually know stuff about it. Just a quick note - we didn't rename the country, Czech Republic is still its official name, Czechia is just a shorter version that was introduced way later. It's normal for countries to have two versions of their names, you wouldn't say 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', you'd say the UK. You also wouldn't call Germany the Federal Republic of Germany, because it's too long. TL:DR - both the Czech Republic and Czechia are still the names of our country and you can refer to it as both! The one name that you SHOULDN'T use however is "Czech" since that is an adjective and not a name of a country xD I am in Czechia 👍 I am in the Czech Republic 👍 I am in Czech 🙅‍♀️ Hope that helps!

Well, actually, the name 'Czechia' wasn't introduced later. :) It was an official short geographical name of the country since 1993 and the word itself goes back to 17th century. It just wasn't used for official presentation of our country because of political reasons, but you can look it up in the UN archives from '93.

Well, amazing it was, but not just because of the city itself, the architecture and so on, but mainly due to the reason that in that time we were still occupied by the USSR, turned into a totalitarian, slave and satellite state.. The Velvet revolution happened many years after, in November 1989... There were police (called STB that time), many spies, censors and so on during their whole stay.. So it was not easy for them to shoot under these conditions... But I personally love Amadeus, the movie, it's a briliant work of art..

The 420 is actually supposed to be 4:20 PM. This was the code used by some California high schoolers in the 70’s to set up a time to go to smoke pot. Over a period of time this spread throughout California, and the entire US of A then followed. When you say ‘four twenty’ you are usually talking about time but it could also be April 20 which is considered to be kind of a holiday for potheads.

And the game show is set up so one member of the team (Martha Stewart, in this case) has the answers in front of them, and must describe them (without saying them) in such a way that the other team member (Snoop Dogg here) says the correct ones. Here all of the answers were marijuana-themed (weed, roach, 420). We can instead be impressed that Martha Stewart knows the country calling code for the Czech Republic (which is not beyond the realm of possibility). Within the context of the themed answers, "420" was really the only thing Snoop could have said in reply.

0:22 and 8:13 -- Petra Petrova (Rocky Rock) is likely a veiled reference to Paulina Porizkova, an amazingly attractive Czech woman who defected to America and became a supermodel in the 1980s. She played opposite Tom Selleck in the 1989 movie "Her Alibi." Since the Czech republic was then behind the "Iron Curtain," she represented all Czech women in the mind of most Americans, especially young men.

I was so confused when I first heard about the new Czech name. I had literally just moved back to the U.K after living in Prague for a year (where everyone I met-Czech and tourist alike- had called it the Czech Republic), went on holiday to Costa Rica and had an American correct me and say "it's not the Czech Republic. That's offensive to call them. The country's name is Czechia" and I had literally only been away from the Czech Republic for like a month. I was so confused 😅. But I've since googled it and asked the people I knew and it seems like both names exist simultaneously, neither replacing the other.

The English name Czechia (pronounced 'Che-ki-ya' btw) is completely fine and logical, because in many languages, our country has been well-known by its short-form name for some time already. E.g. @Kobylkavpyzamu theres no we, you may, just like guys in the vid, personally dislike it but theres no we in sense we, Czechs. lots of Czechs prefer shorter Czechia over the long Czech Republic( just like most of Slovaks speaks usually about Slovakia and aren't anal about using Slovak Republic all the time or most of French usually call France France and not French Republic) cos to them it makes sense, its correct Czech and its been used in past, it has no political connotations and they dont think just cos they personally dont like someones name it gives them right to demand someone to be renamed and others stop using it. My Grandma wouldn't like it cos it'd remind her Tschechei used by Germans during war, which is valid opinion- for her to dislike it but she wouldn't have right to push her own opinion on every Czech cos she wasn't narcissist and knew she can not speak for all Czechs but only for herself. how would you like it if I speak for all of Czechs and been talking about how we Czechs all think that anyone and any tourist who doesn't use Czechia has IQ of room temperature and any Czech who meet them will dislike them automatically just cos I personally think that reasons like "Czechia is similar to Chechnya so its wrong to use the name" are stupid and equally moronic like to demand Austria shouldn't be called Austria anymore cos its too similar to Australia?

Here in Brazil, Prague has actually shown up as a location in several telenovelas. The most notable is the 2001 novela "Um Anjo Caiu do Céu" ("An Angel Fell from Heaven"), where it's the location to the big events that act as the catalyst to the plot of the show. The main character is a photographer who's in town holding an exhibition of his photographs showcasing how much people suffered under the Nazi regime. After that exhibition, he ends up taking a picture of a Neo-Nazi terrorist leader in an intimate moment (mourning the loss of his wife) and that ends up getting him pursued by the terrorists, culminating in his car getting hijacked and exploding with him inside it. This, in turn, causes the angel from the title to swoop in and save the main character's life, and while the main character is in surgery, the angel comes to him and strikes up a deal to help him make amends with his family within six months.

Oh wow! That is so interesting considering that for us Czechs Prague is kind of a meme for being so cheap to film in, that even Netflix producers come here to use Prague as pretend-Paris, pretend-Venice, and pretend-all-of-Europe kind of in general (for example The Grey Man re-used a few Prague streets to pretend the main guy traveled all over Europe and Asia). So the fact that they faked Prague in Montreal when they could've had the real thing for quite cheap is unexpected and quite funny to me. 😆 Now I'm really curious to see what their recreation of Prague made in Montreal looked like 🙂

'Cos they used a lot of specific details that were kinda accurate yet very off, like picking up koruna coin, but using much older Czechoslovak one (and the whole Miloš throwing acid was just weird), Petra's "traditional" wedding dress, the accents...but the show was just all over the top, so I forgive them :D. Though I would've happily consulted for them 😂

I'm sorry for pointing it out, but I can't help but be amused by the differences (like thumbnails and video titles) between this channel and the Czech one (Kluci z Prahy/Guys from Prague). For this one, the Czech version was more direct about how you were upset about the bad reputation (the title was "Alcohol! Drugs! How are we talked about in Hollywood?"). It's understandable, though: different approaches for different audiences. Still (as someone who likes insider insights from other cultures/countries), I'm always interested about how natives of a certain country talk about national issues with each other (there's usual some degree of national pride that "dictates" you shouldn't point out national flaws to foreigners). I know dirty laundry is washed at home, but boy am I curious to see that being washed 😂

2:50 Here’s the explanation for this part with Snoop Dogg: April 20 (or 4/20) is celebrated by marijuana enthusiasts around the world as a day to gather and smoke together. According to1 and2 , the holiday originated with five students at San Rafael High School in California who met at 4:20 p.m. by the campus’ statue of chemist Louis Pasteur to partake in marijuana. The term "420" was popularized by the Grateful Dead and High Times magazine, and the date has become an annual gathering of pot smokers in states where marijuana has been legalized, such as Colorado and California.

It's kinda funny that Plzeň , the City Pilsener comes from, is in the Czech Republic and not in Germany, the country that is now most known for Pils. At least here in the Ruhr Valley, everyone drinks it, even though export is way better because it's less acidic and has more horse power. Czechs have the best dark beer though, and their beer-brewing culture is even better preserved than in Germany ( apart from Bavaria maybe. Sadly I only visited Prague, so it may be the same over there, in that it's mostly preserved for tourists). It's so striking to me, that this city has burned itself into my mind so much, that I recognize many places in the videos, despite having been there only once for a week, when I was in the 12th or 13th year of school. The best place to be, is behind the castle. There is a chasm with ruins, where you are shielded from views, it looks beautiful and for some reason almost noone goes there. There where also some narrow ways with hanging bridges, that where more slippy than the stones in front of the never ending stairs. Edit: Ok, so this is not confusing at all. Czechia and Chechnia. Tschechien, Tschetschenien. At least the thing with the republic was easy to remember. 😑
