When i was a little 8 year old white girl in 1967, i was taken to the Houston Colesseum by my parents. Harry Belafonte was the emcee; we had front row seats and the stage was a boxing ring. A woman was carried to the stage, a microphone was placed in her hand and she became Aretha Franklin; she belted out a few songs, collapsed and was carried away. Then the most amazing thing happened: Dr Martin Luther King came out. i was only 8 but i knew he was Someone Special. The KKK had put a noxious, horrible, nightmare stink bomb in the AC, then they patrolled the streets outside the Colesseum with rifles, they had hoped to incite a riot which would give them a reason to shoot people however NO ONE left. people were vomiting but no one left. Harry Belafonte and Dr King held that crowd of thousands of people together. That's quite a powerful thing when one thinks about it. Aretha Franklin did eventually get clean and sober. Dr. King loved Star Trek, and when Nichelle Nichols wanted to leave the show because she was treated badly, it was he who asked her stay because her influence was very important.

Me, being an active entertainer at 76 years young, I appreciate the reminder of the fragility of life. I love the lack of embellishments. So many of these artists showed impressive weathering. Their skin, their eyes, their hair (if they had any), and their attachment to clothing styles. The most notable issue was the age range.

@@michelle-qh8ll At 16, I had already shown noticeable prowess in 4 sports. I played almost every position in soccer (I had a lot of energy and football was far too boring). I was already doing very well with the breaststroke and relays on the swimming team. In track, I was also showing very good numbers in sprinting, broad-jumping, and relay divisions. I was actually getting trophies and medals in wrestling. I heard a song on the radio just before I turned 16, and practiced 3 nights in the dark on the piano after which I could pick up and play any song just by hearing it super quickly. The ease of learning piano and more than ten other instruments quickly became an unexpected curve in my life which culminated in a life of performance and entertainment. A shame we lost Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino both in one year! They were two of my favorite actors of all time. Liotta especially brought such amazing qualities to any role he inhabited, he seemed to live and breath the character regardless of who it was. I recall his guest shot on SNL where he played David Caruso (with Darrel Hammond as Regis and Amy Poehler as Kelly Ripa) in one skit...and Liotta stole the show just by walking onstage. And in the film "Unlawful entry" with Kurt Russell, that I saw in theater. Liotta was the villain the audience refused to hate. At the ending, Russell has to kill Liotta's character LAPD Officer Pete Davis. In other movies of the time the audience cheered the villain's demise but not this time. The audience didn't cheer, I think that was all because of the tremendous acting job by Ray Liotta. Liotta played Davis as a fundamentally bad and twisted man trying hard to hide it, and to be good instead, and failing at it. Goodfellas was only the tip of the iceberg of Ray Liotta's talent. A supremely gifted actor, and human being.
