Speaking from a program where we warm-up every rehearsal with Long Tones, Lips Slurs, Chorales, and 7 marches.......I salute FAMU because they have ALWAYS been the advocators for playing a varied repertoire!!!

@krbrown...The band is playing Rolling Thunder by memory, on the football field, and marching as they play. You were probably sitting down with a music stand in front of you in a concert hall. There is a marked difference. I would love to see your band march and play Rolling Thunder at 180 mm. LOL

HBCUs condition their players to be heard loud and clear across packed stadiums. they are way better suited for football games than any other style.

One of my favorite marches. A little slow, but for a marching band, not bad. Instead of focusing on certain sections, would rather hear the whole march with proper balance.
@georgiareb112 жыл бұрын
My friend, I AM a real musician. I was a member of the University of Georgia Redcoat band trumpet line when I was in school, and I also have, not that I need to justify my opinion to you, a great deal of respect for the musical traditions of the HBCUs. Other traditions, such as rampant brutal hazing, not so much. But the point here was not that I was dissing the band's rendition, but merely that i was not being played at the written tempo. I have played RT. It is a chop-buster at any speed.

I've read all of the posted comments and there seems to be a consensus of two basic musical points; one, the trombones were misplaced thus making them appear to be out of balance with the rest of the band and two, the march was performed at a slow tempo. I would agree with both logical criticisms. Most march enthusiasts would agree that the Rolling Thunder March should always be played up-tempo. Finally, the trombone melody is a part of the whole and not the whole piece by itself. Balance!

@krbrown76 Marching by memory with NO music in front of you? on a field TOTALLY by memory???? and MARCHING?????
@BlackLightning2010114 жыл бұрын
@aristocratify This is no easy march. At it's original tempo, it's a trombone player's worst nightmare. That said, I have to agree. It is too slow. As for the sound, it just goes to prove that A) trombones are the loudest instrument in the band, B) because of A, trombones should never be at the front and C) you shouldn't put microphones in front of trombones. But then again, it is Henry Fillmore. Woodwinds played well. Would've liked to hear more horns. Were there any 2nd or 3rd trumpets?

is their a band behind those bones? lol

@Bobofwestoregonusa Sure, but it's not just melody and harmony here. It's melody and countermelody. I would've like to hear the countermelody a bit more.

@tubatrumpboy8612 жыл бұрын
I don't care how fast or slow they play it because fast doesn't mean good and slow doesn't mean bad. But they announcer needs to take public speaking lessons and I have never heard that trombone part and also I know there is more than one part as well. Maybe I'm wrong but they added to the trombone part. PLAT WHATS ON THE MUSIC!!!
@badoc1015 жыл бұрын
Nice.LOL, this would explain why the lowbrass is in the back of bands most of the time. Trombones and tubas drowned everything out. n

oh my gosh.... the microphones are in the front... so are the trombones... common sense would tell you that ... for when the trombones move from the front then the trumpets become loud...

@Whales198715 жыл бұрын
Hubba Prof! Recording doesn't do the performance justice. This is a standard that is played well by the 100 just about everytime.
@aristocratify14 жыл бұрын
The point that was missed is that it is futile to place 30 trombones out front when the essence of the march requires all parts to be heard in harmonic tandem. I have followed FAMU more years then you have lived on this Earth. Hater I am not, music observer I am. It would have been more musically effective to keep the shape of the trombone with the trombone section embedded in the band. The slower tempo for this piece served no purpose but to provide assistance to the musically inept.
@Bobofwestoregonusa15 жыл бұрын
Actually, they play out, because it's the melody, and everyone plays softer. Common sense and basic musical concepts would tell you that.
