I remember this one Filipino superstition regarding to funerals (I'm Canadian Filipino). My mom would tell my brother and me that once we get home from a funeral, we would have to enter the house through the back door so as not to bring the spirit of the deceased we had just seen. As soon as we get in the house, we take off all of our clothes (because apparently the "essence" of the dead were stuck to them while we were in the funeral parlour), and take a shower (again, with the "essence" of the dead). I've never really questioned as to why its like that, but I've never gotten the chance to because funerals occurred rarely with me.

My grandma and mom told me not to whistle at night because it calls the ghosts and demons. Another one is to not let babies or toddlers, or children look outside the window at night, or they'll see a ghost. And the last one, is to not play hide and seek at night or else you'll see a shadow or figure around the house while you're hiding, or while you're looking. They sound ridiculous, but I still don't whistle at night, and I don't let my little brother play hide and seek at night.

in bulgaria we also have this thing with the shoes but it's not just for high heels but for any shoes and not only for girls. like, if you buy someone shoes, they will leave you. and also, a very funny one - if someone's cleaning with a broom around you and the broom accidentally touches you, you won't get married (refers just to girls). my mum and my grandma always used this so i would get out of their way while cleaning. :D and another weird one - if a cat or a hen jumps over your dead body, you'll turn into a vampire.

Im from the US (Texas to be exact) & I think these are southern supersistions, but one from childhood is that you must hold your breath when driving past a graveyard. another is if the traffic light turns yellow while you are passing through an intersection, you kiss your hand then touch the roof of your car for protection.

In France there goes a saying that you should never have 13 people dinning together, never walk under a ladder, crossing path with a black cat is bad luck, if you spilt salt on the table you have to throw some behind your back to avoid bad luck, breaking a mirror brings you 7 years of bad luck. well, these are the most commune. But very few people believe in them...

I'm pretty sure that someone already said this BUT, in fact the number 4 does sound like the word death. The use of Chinese characters is deeply rooted in the Korean language and the Korean pronunciation of the Chinese character '死(which means death)' is 'Sa'. Which is exactly one of the ways that Koreans say the number four.

In Russia, if you break a plate or cup or any other piece of china it's considered to be foreshadowing good luck/happiness! Also if you say something that you don't want to happen, you spit over your left shoulder three times (it's kind of the equivalent of knocking on wood). One that I find weird is to not hand over anything through your main doorway, so like if you want to give someone a hat when you're in the house and the person is outside. My favourite one is if you have two people with the same names, you stand in between them and hold their hands and your wish will come true!

In the middle of the night (on our first day), the teacher woke everyone up, knocking on doors loudly and making sure that our windows were open if we were using the electric fan. My grandma's Filipina and she had a couple superstitions I observed growing up: 1) When you enter a new house, salt and rice should be the first things to enter for good luck. 2) Don't sleep with your hair wet or you'll go blind. 3) For New Year's, it's good luck to have 21 (I think? I can't remember the exact number) different fruits in a bowl. 4) For New Year's, my grandparents also throw coins all around the house for good luck and to banish bad spirits. 5) She never liked me opening up umbrellas in the house 'cause she told me centipedes would fall out of it onto me. When I asked her where she heard it too, she just said "Idk, that's what my mom told me" like she didn't even really believe it. xD

I'm a Malaysian but I lived overseas for a while when I was younger and came back when I started highschool so that made me very aware of all the superstitions and habits Malaysians have that I didnt notice when I was younger like: To cancel off something bad someone/you said, that you don't want to happen e.g. "We're gonna fail this test" etc. etc. someone will be like "quick, touch wood" and then everyone just touches something wooden. It's usually the person who said the bad thing that has to touch wood. -but if there is no wood around you can touch your head as a substitute. The next one is suuuuper weird. This one has to do with malay culture that has many ghost related superstitions and the religion Islam. They believe that when you have your period, if you do not wash the blood off your pad before disposing it, the dirty blood will attract bad genies and satans to the house and they will feed off your dirty period blood. At first my family thought this legit was a religion thing but i was like "WTF NO WAAYY I dont believe that shit" so I never followed it but they would scold me but then my aunty did some extensive research on the it and it turns out it was just a superstition. so YAY ME

So +thegrudgesensation, what you're trying to say is that other countries have their own version of the 4th of July that isn't necessarily on the 4th of July and isn't a holiday representing that country's independence?

spiesvsidiots It might as well be a superstition since it's based on pseudoscience (meaning in this case that it twists what the actual science literature says and tries to make it seem like it's actually saying what they want it to) this is often used to sell diet books and programs. Exercise and eating right are important of course, but pairing two truths and a lie doesn't make the lie any more true. Eating at night doesn't *make* you fat anymore than not eating at night will *make* you skinny. Your entire lifestyle contributes.

Puerto Ricans have Tuesday the 13th (ooh spoopy) thought with Americanization we include Friday the 13th as well. Just as well, no black cats, don't go under ladders, and brooms hold mighty powers, like upside down behind a door to get rid of unwelcomed guests, and some cases leaving you single for a while. For the new year, we throw a bucket of water out the door, letting out the old and welcoming the new year with a splash! Also, like the Spanish, eat 12 grapes! If that purse touches the floor you'll lose money, but to fix that, if your palms itch, don't scratch because money is coming your way. Take a shower in water of the first rainfall of May. My favorites though have to be La Llorona (the drowning ghost woman) is looking for more children to take at every river, every fall, every lake, etc., the chupacabra is getting all your livestock, and el Cucuy (the Latino version of the boogieman). And maybe it's just my family being optimistic, but if you are peed on (ex: changing baby sibling) or occasionally get poop on you (though /definitely/ no one encourages it), it is said to be good luck.

Oh and there's somewhat of a superstition (I believe in it ok?) in Turkey where the nazar boncu (search it up on google to see how it looks) is said to take away a person's jealousy (toward someone/some people) the moment they look at it, before anything bad happens to that person. Because of this, you can find the nazar boncu everywhere in Turkey, like restaurants, malls, and especially in jewelry.

About 4: Chinese characters (Hanzi) were originally used in Korean called Hanja. As far as I know it's mostly in Chinese characters used in Japanese (Kanji), which has two readings for 四 (On reading (Chinese origin): Shi, Kun reading (Japanese origin): Yon). It is associated with the verb 死ぬ (shi nu (to die)). Therefore, it's more common to say 'yon'.

Also there is a superstition that if you sneeze twice in a row or if your ears randomly start to get really hot, it means someone is talking about you. ~ anyways, I sleep with my fan on facing me every night and i'm still alive yayy xD

Speaking of bird pooping on you... when I was in 3rd Grade, I think the day after I got my passing result on EOG's, a bird pooped on my shoulder on my way to my bus stop and my mom was with me. She saw it fell on me and said, "It's a sign of blessing." I've seen birds poop on other people while the other person says it's a sign of blessing. I don't know where this is originally from but I think it's just a saying to make yourself positive from a negative effect. :P I'd like to think I'm being blessed.

I've noticed in KDramas that a mirror or a framed picture will often fall off a table and break right before a character gets hurt (usually by car accident lol). "Oh, My Venus" has a really good example. A picture literally hops off the table and break before a big car wreck.

I lived in Japan and they have the same "fan death" superstition. What was unbelievable to me was that it's so widely believed that packaging for fans has a warning on it like "do not leave fan on for extended periods of time, prolonged exposure to fan can be harmful." Like, even the packaging itself doesn't seem to know how or why a fan could harm you, but they put it on there just in case.

LOL. I'm from indonesia, and actually we do have some sort of that "fan death" superstitions, and it's actually worse here. it's applied to AC too, and in cars you shouldn't make the AC fan blow your face or your face will cram and you will start dying. LOL

BU- BUT AIRCON WORKS THE SAME WAY AS FANS. =A= As in they blow air and we only use them in closed spaces, duh. In Indonesia, my mom always told me never to wear your clothes backwards (it happen sometimes though cos some of my tees are plain coloured and lost their labels), because it means you swore on your parents' death. Also you have to be inside the house fro 6PM because ghosts wander around during that time, never wear green clothing's at the Northern Beach or Nyai Roro Kidul will get you, if you smell frangipanis that means kuntilanak (a ghost of a woman who died giving birth) is around, if you shave your brows you can see tuyuls (ghost of miscarried babies), and there are also places where you have to honk your car horns thrice before passing it to ask permission from the ghosts inhabiting it. A lot of superstitions are connected to the supernatural here... Oh, and the bouquet throwing thing is also a superstition here, but there's no time limit. Just that whoever catches it might be getting married next.

For Mexico and much of Central America - one thing each generation is told "DON'T OPEN THAT UMBRELLA INSIDE THE HOUSE!! Allegedly it brings the family and misfortune regarding health and finances, and even death. In Lithuania - you are NEVER supposed to hand someone a pair of scissors - you have to place the scissors down and the other person then can use them. If not done, its believed both individuals will have many injuries to come.

I think in Russia you can't whistle in a house because it's meant to invite in burglars, and you cant sleep with your bed opposite the door because that's how the undertakers position dead bodies.

Russia: -sitting at the table's corner means you will never get married (works only for girls) - accidentally dropping the fork means that soon you may have some guests in you house If a person wants something to happen really badly and you say that it will never happen then it means you took this person's fortune and possibility of something happening. So you need to either knock on things made of wood or to spit over your left shoulder.

I know this is really old and I don't know if you both still read comments, but regarding "the eye of the tornado" it's a real thing. There was a young woman who made a call in the middle of the Joplin, MO tornado not realizing that *it wasn't over yet* and I live in Iowa and when the EF5 went through New Hartford in 2008, a friend of mine was in their basement under a table, while it was passing over, there was like 15-20 seconds of calm where she literally flung her kids to the other side of the basement so they could hide under the stairs because they had been under a table and it wasn't holding up. I just thought you'd appreciate this if you still see it - Martina - you were right ;)
