I'm not Korean or Japanese but i find a lot of the comments here really bigoted and disrespectful. I find both Korean and Japanese culture to be amazing in their unique ways! I first had in interest in Japanese culture in grade 5 through anime and manga but then grew to love it for it's traditional culture as well. Through my fascination with beautiful Japan, i was introduced to Korean culture and i find them both just so wonderful. I would love to visit both countries one day. Please people stop fighting and making silly accusations and learn to embrace one another! We share this world and in the end, while racial,religious, cultural identities are important, we are so much more than just that. Let go of the pretentious pride and ego and learn to respect each other.

I have been in Soulth Korea just for couple of hours. I was transfering on incheon international airport but I also made a short trip to centre of Seoul. It felt like Korea is much more english-friendly in comparison to Japan where I have spended 5 weeks. Is it really true? Or was it just my impression caused by speaking almost only with people at the airport?
@BLuuCaRRot

I have heard that from so many people too- S. Korea is much more English-friendly than Japan. I think it's okay for english-speakers to get by in Korea without having to be fluent in Korean- that's what Simon and Martina does.

Only Seoul vs. Tokyo. It's not true for the rest of the country, where no one speaks English.
@BLuuCaRRot
@BLuuCaRRot 11 жыл бұрын
germankiwigal That's not true- Simon and Martina originally lived in Bucheon, which is a city about 30 mins. from Seoul. Incheon is also about 20 mins. from Seoul as well. There are many other major cities, of which Busan (which is at the other end of SK) is probably the most popular, where foreigners could live in a fairly english-friendly environment apart from Seoul.

OK... I'm Korean who currently lives in the United States, but for most of my life I have lived in South Korea. Since I am a huge fan of both Korean and Japanese culture, and have studied historical and political backgrounds about tensions between two countries, there are TWO POINTS that I want to make about this ongoing hatred between two countries. FIRST of all, both Koreans and Japanese must acknowledge an accurate historical contexts of relationship between Korea and Japan since post WWII. As many Japanese and some Korean comments pointed out previously, in 1965, Treaty on Basic Relations between the Republic of Korea and Japan(한일기본조약,韓日基本條約)was established between two countries, which officially ended the legal obligation of wrong doings of Japanese Empire towards South Korea. One of the reason why many Koreans doesn't acknowledge that there has been a treatment was because all of the debts that were paid were never distributed to Korean public, but used as a foundation of five year plan economic development led by President Park(the father, not the current one who is his daughter) of Korea. Yet, because of institutions which didn't mention this important fact during the time, many South Korean still believes that Japanese Government never have made an official repayment for their crimes towards Korean. In short, it is the fault of Korean GOVERNMENT(not the PEOPLE) OF THE TIME(during 60s) which caused many confusion on Korean public's mind and triggered emotional responses towards Japanese PEOPLE ever since. However, I am not saying that it is only fault of Korean government which caused this hostility between two countries. Japanese GOVERNMENT (again, not people or individuals) also takes huge role in this. Since post WWII, Japanese Government and far-right political groups has been purposefully erasing well-known historical facts including Japanese War-Crimes and ill-treatments towards its colonies during its imperial era. According to the record which examined Japanese history textbooks in 2014, out of 6 different textbooks that were used by middle school and high school students, 4 of them was found to purposefully erasing records of Japanese crimes,etc. Also, many well-known Japanese politicians have been praising and glorifying the war criminals through various actions (which includes visiting Yasukuni Shrine to glorify notorious war criminals during WWII). These actions of Japanese Government that forgets the wrongdoings of the past, but even romanticizing and glorifying them have caused huge controversies between Korea, Japan, and many other countries under the tyranny of Japanese Empire (which includes China and other southeast Asian countries). In a sentence, Japanese GOVERNMENT(again, not the PEOPLE) have been glorifying and made citizens of Japan unaware of their past faults, which triggered lot of aggression. The SECOND point that I want to make, is that people of Korea and Japan must avoid emotional response against others, but instead, try to reason with each other and understand what each other truly wants. As a Korean, I could definitely say that what most Korean wants towards Japanese GOVERNMENT is stopping their process of glorifying wrongdoings of past as well as formally recognizing their past, and give a statement of an official apologies to Korean PEOPLE, in a mean of Korean sentiment. I do understand that Japanese people have made series of official, or unofficial apologies, but the way of Japanese approach is hard to be interpreted in Korea (For instance, many statements claimed that they are 'SAD of what have happened in past'... but in Korea, this statement is unacceptable as an apologies unless it directly says 'SORRY'. It's just a difference between two countries I guess). I am also sure that lot of Japanese People have something that they want for Koreans to work on to solve this tension between two countries. It is something that both countries must work on together as a team. Also, both Koreans and Japanese must realize that using emotional responses worsens the relationship between two countries. Denouncing Japanese people as a MONKEY or aggravating Koreans using offensive terms doesn't solves any problem, but only lowers one's quality. PEOPLE of both countries must realize that it is the problems created by the GOVERNMENT of both countries, not individuals. They SHOULD NOT target or blame PEOPLE or individuals as the cause of these problems. We must understand and recognize each other's differences, and try to respect it in proper manner as well as we could.

I am Chinese and I am studying in the U.S now. I love Kpop thus I traveled to Korea twice and I got an internship in Japan last year and stayed there for 3 months. I got to say I love both countries. :) Yes, Korea and Japan has many different things. As for the subway, I agree. Korea has the most developed subway system. it isnt too complicated & expensive for travelers. But as you live in Korea, you will find the system is well organized and is amazingly on time! There are plenty of apps that can help you calculate how to transit from different lines and the subway can almost help you get anywhere! Both have many cute things which are incredibly interesting and fun. Yes there are a lot of pervert in Japan. Hmmm, Japan is so different from the other countries in the world. But I really love to visit there again! I also envy those kids who grow up there. There are just soooo many fun! Japanese is more gentle and polite while Korean is more passionate, outgoing and sassy. Korean is more straight-forward. Japanese always has good manner. You will feel comfortable and welcomed anytime you are in Korea and Japan.

Dear Simon and Martina, I think you're misunderstanding difference between hoe (Korean raw fish) and sashimi (Japanese raw fish). They are not the same dish. If you ask as Japanese sushi chef how sashimi is supposed to be prepared properly, he will tell you it has to be aged (and most of the time frozen) so the fish becomes more tender as the proteins are broken down. This gives the sashimi its flavor and texture. On the other hand, hoe is literally fresh fish because the dish is prepared from fish that was alive just minutes before. Asking Korea to get hoe "right" so it will be like sashimi is asking a country to change its traditional dish to be like a dish from another country and reveals your ignorance (sorry to use this word for lack of a better term). If you want sashimi or sushi, there are Japanese restaurants in Korea that will prepare the fish in the way you like them. Koreans like hoe because it is a little chewy and fresh, which may not suit Western palate like yours.

All the bad comments about japan makes me laugh. attacking a culture that you don't know is just ridiculous. I am a foreigner living in japan for more than a year, I have NEVER in my life met such NICE HELPFUL and POLITE people as japanese people. I NEVER had any trouble here and japanese always do their best to help you out, respect you and even though they still see you as a foreigner, they accept you in their country. This place is more safe than any other country i've ever been, I never had any trouble here and I'm a woman. So stop saying shit about japan if you don't know, because japanese people are caring and lovely and I'm pretty sure everyone who comes to japan just loves it. Now, about KoreanxJapanese I know all the problem and I can't talk about it or take sides. So my comments is just about japan and japanese people. I've been to korea as well. I just got disgusted by all this comments saying shits about japanese people when in fact japanese are proabbly the most friendly and polite people in the world.

From a Chinese-Vietnamese person whose ancestors were also affected by Japanese rule, I really think Korea should stop holding this grudge against Japan. They've apologized several times for their actions during WW2. Besides, almost all of the people involved during WW2 are now deceased. If you are still mad at Japan, you're mad at the wrong government.

I agree that Korea's city landscape isn't as pretty as those in Japan or Europe. That's because Korea until recently was a developing nation while Japan and Europe industrialized 50 years earlier than Korea, China or rest of Asia did. And Korea has strong enough culture and identity. No problem with that. If you can't see that's too bad. It just means you don't know not that Korea doesn't have it. And your preference is your right. No need to trash others in favor of another.

There is a very interesting reason for the huge different between the Japanese teen fashion (harajuku, etc) and the business world! Traditionally, Japanese culture values group harmony. This translates to school uniforms through high school, and business uniforms in the work setting. Thus, the only time of life that most Japanese people can enjoy expressing their own fashion sense is in their college years... and they use these years to go wild. That's why you find Lolita, Harajuku, Gyaru, etc. With regards to vegetables, you probably were going to specialty Donburi-mono shops, ramen shops, or udon shops. In Japan, most restaurants specialize in a single type of food. However, it's actually pretty unusual to have a meal without some sort of accompany veggie (pickles, kimchi, etc.) So you probably were just unlucky!

Haha Australia is the same as Japan with regards to passwords on internets. However, I must say the public transport in Australia is terrible in comparison to Japan. If you think Japan public transport is bad, try Australian transport, haha the trams, buses and trains totally disregard their schedules and arrive whenever. And every now and then it will just not arrive for a good 45 mins after it was planned to arrive. Japan transport was accurate to the seconds.

I now live in Japan and used to live in Incheon, and I cannot agree more about the subway systems. Seoul blows Tokyo's system out of the water in terms of value and simplicity. In terms of crazy sex shops though, there is an expression among many expats in Japan which is: There is Tokyo, and then there's Japan. From what I hear, even Osaka doesn't have the crazy sex shops like Tokyo does.

I travelled to both countries. I actually live in japan. This is my opinion: I felt the same way about Korean public transportation when I went there as you felt about the Japanese public transportation, so I think it`s a bit of what you are used to. I think people in Japan are politer in general, specially if you are a costumer, they will do everything for you. I stayed just for a week in korea, i didn't make any friends, but it felt like people are friendlier to each other, they looked very western, different from japanese people who are working all the time and look like robots a lot of times. There was a lot of trash on the streets in korea, I wasn't expecting for that. In japan you can have those side dishes with vegetables in some restaurants, but you usually have to pay for them(but food is generally cheaper in japan anyway). I think japan is a much better country when it comes to sightseeing, i didn't feel like korea was that interesting, but night life is certainly better in korea than in japan. Both are really good countries, and very different countries.

As a Korean student studying in Japan this is so relatable. Everything you guys said is true. Although you DO get pretty bad sushi in Japan as well sometimes. Also while I prefer Korean subway over Japanese like you guys, that's only when you are in the metropolitan area. In Japan you can use public trains to go to really rural areas and you can even travel the whole country with it. We don't have that in Korea, just Seoul and maybe Busan. Another thing I would like to add is cell phones…it's kinda shoking how so many Japanese use old school phones while EVERYONE in Korea uses smartphones.

Im Korean and personally I like Japanese people, anime and some of their music, but I think the main cause of the hate is because of the refusal of Japanese politicians and nationalists to accept the wrongs of their past and glorify that past . Yes it is in the past and the current Japanese people in this generation have nothing to blame but there are the nutheads who just act so callously and that makes people's blood boil. Conclusion: a problem caused by a smaller group of people who add fuel to a fire.

I don't think it's necessarily a worship of war crimes, but more like the government only informing half of the truth. Like, Japanese people are not gonna say oh, what we did to Korea was good. But at the same time, the general public doesn't know about most of the crimes that were committed and therefore don't understand why some Koreans don't like them, other than just hate. Just my opinion though, I'm no expert at the topic.

I am Chinese and I am studying in the U.S now. I love Kpop thus I traveled to Korea twice and I got an internship in Japan last year and stayed there for 3 months. I got to say I love both countries. :) Yes, Korea and Japan has many different things. As for the subway, I can't agree. Japan has the most developed subway system. But, yes maybe it is too complicated & also expensive for travelers. But as you live in Japan, you will find the system is well organized and is amazingly on time! There are plenty of apps that can help you calculate how to transit from different lines and the subway can almost help you get anywhere! Japan has many cute things which are incredibly interesting and fun. Yes there are a lot of pervert there. Hmmm, Japan is so different from the other countries in the world. But I really love to visit there again! I also envy those kids who grow up in Japan. There are just soooo many fun! Japanese is more gentle and polite while Korean is more passionate, outgoing and sassy. Korean is more straight-forward. Japanese always has good manner. You will feel comfortable and welcomed anytime you are in Japan. But in Korea, you may see some uncivilized behaviors.

He denies and accuses Japan's former prime minister of speech. In doing so, he is working for Japan's rearmament. He still has an ambition to invade neighboring countries. There's so much hate! Seriously! I just came here to watch a video about what a couple thinks about both countries and the differences. I'm really interested in both countries. As a Japanese (so don't call me a weeboo) who has studied korean culture for five years, I know some differences exist but overal, they aren't overly different. The problem is, both countries have a bit of a pride issue. Japan has offered to help Korea one time when a large cruise ship collapsed resulting in the death of many people, but Korea refused. In Japan anyways, we actually do like Korea. Kpop is a thing there and we aren't trying to hurt them in any way. Before you disagree with that, go to Japan and see for yourself. We've forgotten about wars no seriously, anyone who disagrees with that is pretty stupid. I mean we absolutely love America and they've bombed us. James Kim that nonsense, lot of Korean are bias, over exaggerating fabricating, in modern time Japan and Korea had dispute and stuff going on but never had war with each other, although Japan annex Korea politically. during colonization time of Korea is far better condition in health food education order compare to last Korean dynasty josean, there was only 1 riot during 35year of colonization, which Korean claim that it when Japanese massacre Korean but that over exaggerating, in riot those Korean religious leaders who agitate and led riot got arrested and thousands of Korean are arrested but none of them got killed and got release, I think that there was few people died but I don't think there was massacre or tortures,if there was how come Japanese arrest lots of rioter but people who got arrested nobody got killed? and that the only one riot in 35years also during WW2 Japanese army had Korean commander, Korean minister who got prosecute to be war criminal,and over 200000 Korean man was in Japanese army,famous president of south korea park chon hee was one of them too,he was elite soldier of Japanese army,korea claim that japan made Korean women sex slave, but there is no proof of that,beside it would be very awkward, if there was why many Korean man help japan during WW2 and why if japan made Korean women sex slave why are many Korean man include Korean generals didn't do nothing about it? they are in Japanese army if they did something it would made japan lot of trouble because one of commander of Japanese army was Korean,this sex slave stuff is clearly fabrication.
