We spend a day exploring the chilly and windy Fanø, Denmark. We are rewarded by some wonderful beer at Fanø Bryghus - fanøbryghus.dk/. We wrap with a walk through the Christmas market in Esbjerg and dinner at the street food market - esbjergstreetf.... It was a nice relaxing day spent exploring!

Every time I complain, or I hear someone else complaining, about the weather, I can hear my mom: _No such thing as wrong weather … only wrong clothing._ Fanø - at any time of year - is truly a beautiful place to visit.

I agree, it was gorgeous regardless. I need to get some gloves that I can wear while still holding and operating the camera. When it is super cold and windy it becomes a challenge, which was the case right before we shot that part of the video :).

@@TravelinYoung My old platoon leader used to address our servicemen, who never complained about the weather, with these wise words.. "Rain is just the sunshine, dressed in another manifestation, of our environment." Ergo it didn't matter what kind of weather we had. You simply did not question the man. Or you were force fed with a plethora of his other "logical" thoughts. But the dude was not wrong... It was actually a genius way to end the conversation, which did not evaporate the bad weather situation anyway, while you were complaining. The man simply managed his own way through his duties, as a kind of God among men. And he also were our superior officer.. that also helped a little to understand 😁

Nice to see that you have come down to Sønderho, I hope you can go there during the summer. Felt almost at home when I saw Sønderho mill. The third Sunday in July is Sønderhodagen and many people dress up in folk costumes, and they are many different costumes for different purposes. In the old days, women owned houses and men owned the boats. One of Denmark's first international beach hotels was located on Fanø, it is also said that Denmark's first golf course is located on Fanø. :)

Next summer you could go on a trip along the west coast of Jylland from Tønder to Hanstholm or even Skagen. The new Tirpitz bunker museum is great and in Hanstholm a train can get you into the bunkers. Kite festival on Fanø, sandsculptures at Søndervig, some places they still drag old fishing boats up on the beach. Old lighthouses and surfing at Cold Hawaii could be interesting too.

We do need to visit the middle of the west coast for sure. We've been to Tønder a couple of times (to the music festival) and up to Skagen over this past summer, more to see though for sure!

Esbjerg once had a very bad rep as being the remote and stinky "Fishtown" of Denmark, because of the old days where it relied on a smelly fishing industry, but today, the city's industry relies mostly on offshore and green energy businesses. The west coast with Vesterhavet as it's backdrop, has this unique, almost "other-worldly" calming effect on both us danes and the tourists who visit the place, it's always very windy there :D Did you see the "Mennesket Ved Havet" sculptures in Esbjerg, or the Fiskeri- Og Søfartsmuseet? Worth a look when you're there :) I also recommend you visit Vejers Strand during the summer time, if you're near the area sometime, it's very cozy and Brisket would love it :D

If you like the landscape, you could try a horseback ride. There are guided horse tours on Fanø. It is really nice and other animals do not get scared of the horses, so you will see animals too.

You should come back to Fanø in the summer. There is much more life on the island. Sønderho is a really nice town with lots of nice old houses, and there are good eating places, and a huge beach you can drive down to. 3rd Sunday in July there is Fanø day, where there is a party, and the residents are dressed in the local Fanø costumes, and they go up to the mill and dance local Sønderho dance. Nordby is also a cozy town with alleys and shops and restaurants. I have been there a lot because my girlfriend has family over there.

Ah, if I knew you'd be in Esbjerg I'd have recommended stopping by Sand's Restauration to try what I consider traditional Danish food. Though I haven't been there in quite a while, so I don't know if it's still as good as I remember. Just the starter tartellet you can get, is enough to make you somewhat full. And then there're big main dishes, that at least us Danes struggle to finish.

Absolutely a little spot of Scandinavian eden.. the family has a holiday home on Fanø.. but it's been a long time since I was down there to stay for a while. Did you go to the beach and collect some amber? The geographic placement is significant, and that makes it easier to find amber there.. I even have a the set I inherited from the local ceramics makers on the island.. it's a very different place from the rest of Denmark..

If I'm not mistaken then "Evil Twin" is the name of a brewery which used to be Danish but is now American as the brewer moved to The US (New York). Fun fact: THe brewer (Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø) is the twin brother of MIkkel Borg Bjergsø of Mikkeller fame (or infamy if you look at the recent #Metoo debacle in the brewing world). Evil Twin is known for making great stouts (among other things) :)
