I think I played this myself in the past, and really didn't care enough to get through the first level. It's not a bad game per se, I just couldn't get use to the control. This video did spike my interest in it again, reminded me of Sonic Robo Blast 2 for obvious reasons. Not sure why people are bashing it so much, honestly. It's not the best fangame, but it's not the worst on the planet. "Worse than Sonic 06 itself" Yeah, I call bullshit.

For a Fangame it is pretty good and seems to have a bit more focus on Storytelling, it sounds a bit improvable with the wording though. Still solid work and if there will be a bit more polish, it could be even better.
