THIS VIDEO: The way that Fan Ho’s photography emerged in the west was similar to the discovery of a time capsule - a photographic record - that had been …in inverted commas, discovered. Almost all of his famous images were produced before he was 28 years old and that means he largely faded from the photography scene by the early 1960s. At that time, he had achieved some international recognition, but his work hadn’t been exhibited widely. He said that he had fame, but no fortune…and needed to support his young family - so he shifted into the world of film making- first as an actor, and then later as a director.

An articulate and inspiring analysis. Fan Ho deserves his place among the very greatest photographers. Too bad he had to waste so much time making trash films in order to stay afloat. One can only imagine the depth and breadth of his oeuvre had he been free to pursue his photographic work throughout his life. Thank you for making this video; I enjoyed it immensely.

Great artist. I wonder how he managed to get the people to ignore or fail to recognize that he was photographing them, and a lot of times from down low. That would attract my attention right away.

Breathtaking work. Great video. So glad you revealed that one of his most famous photos was constructed. It is easy to get a sense of inferiority if we can't get shots like that in camera. Knowing that image was posed and manipulated in the darkroom doesn't make it any less powerful, any more than finding out Bresson's most famous image was a crop.

Thank you, that was fascinating. As a painter, I love photographs like some of these that give beautiful images that wouldn’t work in a painting. Although now I’ve said that I’m on the point of arguing with myself… So thank you again - very thought provoking! I like your voice, too.

Is it common the photographer quits early in life? I was more active up to 50-year-old. Then the work to keep up the level of photography was increasing in cost and hours until I had to decide to continue with my ordinary work or try to get professional. For years after that I kept it on a low level and did not get any new equipment. Lately I have upgraded my equipment, except PS, and a 15mm lens, and now I slowly staring to be more rigorous in my photography again but my ordinary work still take most of my free time so there are little time to make good photographs.

Thanks for this video. Its more insightful than a lot of much longer ones. I'm glad you pointed out just how much darkroom work he did to 'create' a dramatic image. I just wonder if people would still be copying him (usually badly) if they saw the original negs. I guess its all about the composition, you can fix the contrast after. Watching the movies might ruin his reputation 😖
@lowe_h_seger

A celebration video like this only promotes one's work and spreads awareness. I believe the technical aspect described is not ruining his reputation. Great photographers have used techniques to enhance their work since the great innovation of the darkroom. These techniques are lifelong craft skills that are shaped and improved over decades of practice rather than software manipulations. Nevertheless, an interesting conversation to have "where to draw the line"
@iainmc9859
@iainmc9859 Ай бұрын
@@lowe_h_seger I'm not criticising the darkroom skills, probably moreso the lack of knowledge of the digital generation that the same 'manipulation' has been going on since the dawn of photography. There's a whole bunch of people that 'believe' the final image was what was caught on the negative, which is often not the case. Ansel Adams would be another good example. Neither am I saying that the only memorable images where created by manipulation 'in post'; just for the sake of clarity. As to 'where to draw the line', for me it is all about the intent of the photographer but also just as much in the subjective judgement and opinion of the viewer.

My thought is that if one is open about what one is doing, then why not. It becomes a problem when one presents work as one thing, but behind the scenes, there are a whole number of other things going on.
