Fan Friday Request:
"This would be very timely now that we’re post Super Bowl.
I’m looking for the clip of Dave talking about the 10 second Promo during the Super Bowl with Oprah and Jay Leno. There was a guy in the crowd who thought it was actually a Tostito Chips advertisement. Dave ends up giving the guy in the audience a bag of chips!!!

Welcome to the Letterman KZbin Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era.

This is still one of my all time favorite Letterman bits. I love that he is a a bit irritated and enjoying himself at the same time.

I confess that I was one of the people who remembered this ad as a commercial for chips.

This was SUCH a great PS to the monumental event that was that commercial. The anticipation after the commercial aired waiting for this segment was incredible. The first segment after the monologue of Late Show was always the best of the best, but this one was special. Hearing Dave comment on these events was gold.

@@taxesdeathandtrouble.1886 It was a promo for "Late Show" on CBS. A promo for the show itself. But a bag of chips was visible in the promo, so apparently a bunch of people thought it was an ad for the chips.

The most impressive part of this clip... How did Dave toss an OPEN bag of chips into the audience and not spill a single one??

physics and technique from that beautifuL mind and head coupled with godly sensibilities, however dave has a few drawbacks of regular stardom traits it is not too bad, and actually healthy from a very strong scientific point of view, with a great self esteem and quality and balance because of the rich dynamics of dave's being but all of that is between dave and god, so its personaL, he is a lovable person on screen and a great sport like great comedians and such we see ourselves in so much with the commonality of a sense of humor. Love all the late show personalities they are lovable and cooL and celebrated as heros of laughter that we share with to feel good, like in a session with god. blessing god together seeing each other through proxy communications and recordings as a telephone, screen com, etc..

This was HUGE in the moment and that's probably going to be lost and forgotten with the passage of time. It came out later that President Obama was watching the Super Bowl, saw the Dave/Jay promo, and dispatched one of his aides to contact the network and ask if it was "for real."

Something I have been reflecting on... Dave lost his father just before he headed into the world - when he was asked about it 25 years ago he said it was inconsequential. Eddie vedder shared his story about how his mother revealed to him when he was a teenager that the person who he thought was his father wasn't his father. She then told him another person who he had know very briefly was his real father. Songs - Alive, black, once... This changed his life because he didn't like the guy he thought was his dad and his real dad was a musician. Song - betterman. From this experience eddie realize a father is not just a person but a program in your head. He started writing music that helped others explore this idea, as well as, gave people helpful ideas that they may not have ever learned through his music. Given to fly, wishlist, in hiding are examples. Dave would conger eddie to come on the show by humming black. I think that dave really appreciated eddies take on fatherhood and the father construct/archetype. Dave had spent the previous years being a father figure to so many people - exposing them to things like special effects artistry, music, stupid pet tricks. I have a great father and he always made me want to learn and be useful and thoughtful - he exposed me to many of the things that dave and eddie exposed others too.. But there were thins he couldn't teach me and people like dave and eddie help me understand fatherhood so much and made me appreciate what I had. It took until I was an adults to realize that other people didn't have what I had and think of how thoughtful these famous people were in helping others understand the father construct/archetype. Anyways, I think dave lied in that interview - I think the loss of his father pained him so much that he became a father to millions. Turning pain into love is a special skill and we are all better having seen it done.

Honestly, how do you mistake something like that for a Tostitos ad? They must have been advertising that year as well. We'll be right back with Tina Fey.

I can only imagine it was because both Jay and Dave were eating chips in the commercial, Jay did commercials for Doritos back in the 90s, and Doritos did commercials for the 2010 Super Bowl. Tyler got his references (and brand names) mixed up. Plus, I’m sure Tyler was just nervous about talking to David Letterman in person. ;)

None of them are dead but two are doing well for themselves. I mean Oprah has her network and does quite a bit for discovery plus, Dave has his Netflix show which is amazing if you’ve never seen it, then we have Jay “big jaw” Leno hosting a low rated syndicated game show 🤣🤣.
