It's definitely Shatner's best cover, and he has some good ones. However, Devo's cover of "Hey Hey, My My" with Neil Young on supplemental guitar is the greatest moment in early eighties music. It's up on YT now. If it isn't 9 minutes, it's not the right video.

Nearly ten years old, and I've only seen this for the first time today. Oh well, better late than never. LordRicco666, whoever you are and whether or not you still exist, please know: this is damn beautiful. Funny, slick, gorgeously assembled, and sometimes just wicked smart (Uhura in front of the monitor, relearning everything after Nomad wiped her brain in "The Changeling," in time with "pretend you never went to school"? Oh man!). Bravo, sir, bravo!

Awww. Thanks :) The clip was spoken word/video so the clip had to match the lyrics of the song so in some ways all it took was meticulous editing and a trekker knowledge of Star Trek but yes wanted to inject humour too :) But in some ways it's like Michelangelo said "The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material."

Most people think, that Shatner was an actor first and then started to sing, but they're wrong. The reason you didnt get the point of the artists song is the very reason the artist created the song. In other words you need a pretentious fabricated thespianiac personality such as William Shatner to spell it out for you or tha base brutality of a nuclear war for mindless #ConsumerSwine like you to "Get It"
@je7055
@je7055 4 жыл бұрын
@@SPIDERM0OSE As someone who loves both versions & slightly prefers the Pulp version - isn't the point that there's nothing to "get", that the romanticizing of poverty is just an illusion? To say that poor folks have a special perspective that no one else can understand seems to go against the song and seems to share the view of the rich girl he's singing about. That said, I do think the Shatner version sacrifices much of the original's rich subtlety in favor of communicating the themes of class and inequality more clearly. I can definitely see how this version would seem too heavy-heanded and spelling-it-out to a British listener - the original could afford to be subtle (one of its strengths, certainly) because the song's idea of class is a particularly British idea. There's obviously class and inequality in North America too, but over here it doesn't take the same form in pop culture; while we fetishize poverty too, it tends to fall more along racial lines because of our own history (Eddie Murphy in Trading Places.. and Coming to America for that matter) it's not quite the same phenomenon that a Brit could immediately trace back to Dickens' pastoral depiction of the lower classes, the chimney sweeping boy archetype, etc. - so the Shatner version does need to emphasize those ideas more for a North American audience, again at the sacrifice of the original's subtlety and in a way that probably fairly enough comes across as too blunt, maybe even hammy, for many British listeners.
@SPIDERM0OSE
@SPIDERM0OSE 4 жыл бұрын
@@je7055 Yea. Maybe, to all that. I think yer overthinking it tho. Shattner has no duty of care toward watever integrity you imagine the original song possessed. I think you need a familiarity with British culture, English culture in particular n even more precisely Yorkshire culture & its humor. I don't think the song glamorizes poverty, there is no genuine poverty in 90s Britain to glamorize, social problems yes, genuine poverty no. The British for all their faults have an all for one attitude to their home, they're proud of themselves n their collective history & accomplishments. As such they accept their place on the totem pole, not everyone can be rich but everyone can contribute to the Good Ship Britannia & the working class are proud of their contribution. The attitude of the song is matter of fact & unpretentious, very much working class English with a dollop of Yorkshire wit thrown in. The rich girl is treating them/him like hes from an other planet n hes saying " Wat are you going on about you silly cow ?" 90s Working class Britain has no inferiority complex, similarly a British aristocrat wouldn't feel too uncomfortable around the working class, only spending power seperates em em but culturally they have all the trappings the other has, car, house, friends, holidays etc. Im not a big fan of the Brits but thats one of thier major strengths, they're very much in it together whether I like em or not n I respect that strength of character, coz come wat may they'll be OK n they kno it too.
@je7055
@je7055 4 жыл бұрын
@@SPIDERM0OSE Of course the song isn't glamorizing poverty, the speaker is making fun of the girl for glamorizing it, and I agree that understanding the original song requires some familiarity with British culture, that was pretty much my point =p

I watch this pretty regularly, and I always wonder how intentional it was on op's part that this song kind of feels like a perfect encapsulation of star trek's (especially tos) themes of, like, economic tourism? Like the crew of the enterprise, coming from their utopian society on a mission of curiosity and discovery really are kind of like a rich kid playing at being working class to enrich themselves with authenticity or whatever but then getting way more than they bargained for, and at the same time, encountering all these godly aliens who are even more privileged and bored than they are who use them as playthings for their own entertainment. like that line "and everybody hates a tourist, especially one who thinks it's all such a laugh", one way or the other, isn't that the plot of so many of those old episodes? anyway great vid 👍
