These pricing points have hit such a level that the general mass of bikers could no longer find it reasonable to purchase one at such a price.

This. Yea it's cool, but $1500 is more than your average cyclist's entire bike. I thought the old AXS was nuts for a derailleur and this is somehow almost 3x more expensive? This is just another bit of gucci kit that isn't actually better in any practical term and just exists for the sake of existing. Even this video could honestly only come up with "it's durable and is slightly better at climbing on slippery terrain" as the only actual reason to get one.

The average salary in my country is around 50k annual, and if you factor in bonuses and stuff it goes higher. So, I don’t know about you man, but that’s stats shows but that it should be pretty affordable to the average person. Maybe the pricing is more of a YOU problem than a SRAM market research problem.

Let's not sing the virtues of replaceable parts until we know how readily available they are, if they're documented, and what they cost. You broke a slim portion of the upper part at 5:43 in your impact testing, but if it only comes with electronics, it might well be $400. Very few brands have a good track record for this. It's a marketing bullet point until proven otherwise.

@Jack Halem It's really not an issue with my aluminium rental bikes. Just shove them in the downtube until they come out below the crank. Then it's basically outside of the frame following under the chainstay. Little loop to the rear derailleur. New outer and inner cable takes me 10-15 minutes an bike.

If you watch the video again and listen to the part where he explains that the derailleur is systematically shifting based on timings, you'll realize why cable actuated shifting is impossible. We cannot, as human beings, shift this precisely, everytime we go to shift. A computer can.

I always love new tech, but I’ll stick with my SLX derailleur and XT shifter for the foreseeable future. About $210 all in, CDN, for that combo. I don’t know why people want batteries on everything these days, I just want to ride my bike about worrying if multiple batteries are charged, ie, seat post, drivetrain, etc.

As an old mountain bike racer from the 90s who spent a lot of time riding in the backcountry of Alaska, I can’t help but agree about preferring simple equipment. I don’t even like the idea of hydraulic brakes; I would use a high end cable model (like the Paul brakes) if I was still riding in Alaska because I prefer fixable equipment that can be dealt with anywhere, anytime. I still am not sure about these electronic derailleurs.
@Gojira_Wins
@Gojira_Wins 6 ай бұрын
So by that logic you only park your car and slow down with your handbrake because it's cable actuated, unlike the hydraulic, fluid based braking system all cars have? Aside from a pretty poor opinion, many channels have proven time and time again that hydraulic brakes are vastly superior in every way. Even the best cable brakes are only able to compare to dual piston brakes while quad piston can stop 400lbs of bike, people and gear going 25mph to a dead stop in 20 feet. Cables would let you run right into traffic and get hit. Safety is everything and cable brakes are not good enough anymore.

Over time as my cassette, chainring, chain and derailleur need replacement I would consider going transmission. Why is everyone complaining about pricing? This is a top end flagship component. This is designed for the people who have disposable income to spend on the most expensive parts for their bikes. The rest of us peons need to wait for this to trickle down to their GX (hopefully cable actuated) model spec. This is how it has always been, and always will be. After initially being suspicious, it seems that this is actually a consumer friendly design, so I am excited to see the cheaper models of this design come out in the next few years. UDH was an amazing move, and this seems to be a continuation of that with replaceable derailleur parts. Derailleurs designed to be serviced, and last the life of your frame should be celebrated with gusto!

When asked about longevity SRAM had this to say: "We have given the new X0 and XX Transmission chains the designation of our strongest chains ever produced, and this is due to a few design factors. Moving to a flat top design has allowed us to add material into areas of the chain where strength is crucial. Additionally, we were able to increase the thickness of the cassette cog and chainring teeth, to improve overall lifespan. The new Flattop chains are available with the same coatings as our XX1 chains to help improve resistance to corrosion and wear. Warm Regards, Max. SRAM Rider Support"

Is it any different from the force from the wheel though? The wheel is attached at both sides I suppose, but it is also a much longer lever. For me electronic shifting is a must due to my thumb misaligning during shifts, not every shift, usually I never know when it will happen, so unless I feel it's already misaligned and my thumb locks up it will hurt horribly as it happens during the shift, no way to stop it, As archer Components is going out of business, I need another option in the future if this breaks down, I hope my unit can get repaired before they shut down completely.

The system seems impressive although the weakest point in the system will always break first. Before the weakest point was the derailleur hanger that cost change to replace. Now to me it seems like the weakest point of the system would be the pulleys cage, I wonder if the cost of the cage is lower/same/higher than the trusty hanger... Probably higher...it's the how to pull money from a product that's already been sold...time will tell✌
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo Жыл бұрын
In my experience, it has been impacts to the b-knuckle (like the ones we did in our other video) that tend to bend the hanger. Usually the derailleur fares okay with those. Impacts to the cage will often time ruin the derailleur (previous pulley cages were not replaceable). With this derailleur, you can now replace the cage in it's entirety. - Dan P.

@@FanatikBikeCo hey, yes I know it all parts are replaceable now, well my point was, are the weakest parts(that take care of functionality) of this derailleur also as cheap to replace as the derailleur hanger(most probably not) and can you take them with you in a pocket on the trail(obviously not), well anyway the hardcore riders will prove it's usability etc...cheers ✌

The only thing I don't like about the new SRAM AXS is the delay in shifting... I submitted a ticket at their support desk which was replied that Nino Shurter still wins world cup races with their deraileur... I bet if you would ask Nino's opinion he would also say that the delay in shifting is simply bad for quick cross country racing...

To everyone saying this technology is too expensive or that it should be transitioned to normal cable drivetrains you have to understand this is a completely new and unique system.It’s the first iteration and of course there going to be a premium to have the latest and greatest. Understand this will take time to trickle down. Have fun with your already great GX systems and drool at what your future holds.

Stopped listening at 0:22. Most of the opening comments about AXS are not true except price. Having turned the wrench on my bikes for over 45 years, I can say AXS is easier to install, easier to dial in, shifts better, and while expensive, worth every penny. Whatever he has to say about the new drivetrain may or may not be valid. But the premise is spotty.
@FanatikBikeCo
@FanatikBikeCo Жыл бұрын
That has not been my experience. The micro adjust has the same functionality as your barrel adjuster. B-tension still had to be adjusted with AXS. The limit screws on a mechanical system only need to be adjusted the first time, so it's not something the rider would have had to mess with after the initial install (and even then it takes a minute or so to do). There's the cable and housing install, but that's a once a year thing at most, and once it's routed the first time, it's easy to use the previous cable or housing as a guide for the new, dramatically cutting down on time to replace. AXS is heavier for a given tier (X01, XX1, etc), requires a battery, and seems to suffer from more chainslap. What am I missing? - Dan P

so like why cant people just stick with 11 speed? the cog spacing is far enough apart that the shifting no longer becomes so tolerance dependent and allows a little wiggle room while still shifting smoothly. just make a 52 tooth 11 speed cassette why is that so hard jeez

I’m SO sorry, but this commercial is a little ridiculous. Did you really say that whenever you would bend the derailleur hanger you also irreparably damage the derailleur itself? Did you think to say that yourself, or is that part of the SRAM script? I think the biking community at large would tend to disagree. 😂

These guys have put together a very comprehensive and detailed 12+ minute video and you're complaining about one 3 second sentence. Also, the most common reason for bending a mech hanger is stupid things like banging your mech on the door frame, lying your bike on the ground gear-side-down and other clumsy non-riding bike storage errors. If you bend your hanger when riding, it will quite often bend the parallelogram. - Oh, and stop getting upset at the price of fancy cutting edge technology. You don't have to buy it. Your bike still works just as well as it did last week.
