Today's video is my best advice for young car guys and gals and fanboydom, fanbois, not being a coattail rider, and social media influencers. This week is a video series on the BEST advice I have relating to the car world. If this were the last week of my channel, these would be the most important videos.
Also, I've renamed my channel "Casey the Car Guy" because soon it will be ONLY car related content. Please subscribe to "The Golden Shovel with Casey Putsch" at / @caseysgoldenshovel where I've decided to focus my energy and logic to cut through the BS and propaganda of our time! One of the best parts of being in a more rural area is the lack of the showy fanboy culture. Cars and coffee is a once or sometimes twice a month thing unless you drive a few hours away. Nobody is there to show off or prove anything. Everybody respects the place that allows it to happen and those who don’t are told to not come back. It’s unfortunate that the reputation of “car enthusiasts” has become what people see on Facebook/Instagram (mustang crash compilations, street takeovers, etc.)

Only problem with the rural area is, the stigma that everyone has a rusted out lifted 4x4 and if you had a sports car, Viper or a lowered truck you were to weird or rich one.

This has been happening in a lot of communities. I use to be really into sneakers. Going to and lining up for releases was fun. You’d meet like minded people and you could trade or buy sneakers you missed out on, but now you have these kids with connections buying up 200 pairs on their parents’ credit card and selling them for more than double retail price. The sneaker community is dead now because of them.

I think the whole "likes/clicks" thing, is going to end up one of the biggest cons of our time. It feeds the desire for glory, without a war. It fades even faster. I grew up in a family that had some money, some of the members put on a show. I feel into that as well, I think that's one of the trappings of youth, you don't know any better. You have to learn it's all BS in the end. Some never learn that, or worse some hate it because of their false perception. Without realizing there is a price for everything. Coffee and Cars, I used to attend a lot of them. But over time I was getting board, all the same cars would show up. Now I don't go for the cars, I go to talk to hang out with my friends. Yes, we talk cars, we gravitate to the unusual cars that show up. So far the winner of the most unusual car I've seen in the last year. A Triumph TR7, it was a piece of crap, who cares it was still cool looking. I find new cars boring, I'm not impressed by performance. But I am surprised by how much horsepower regulators have let pass on production cars. A funny one for you Casey. My Mom and I are sitting at an intersection. Across the way is a Urus, I say to my Mom, "That's a Lamborghini." She states, "That's a Lamborghini? I thought Lamborghini's were supposed to be interesting."

I started off life as super poor when it was me and my dad, then he got a house, back to super poor, then He got promoted and went up in wages, We lived nicely, then eventually in high school I became an upper middle class kid and had more than I needed. But it never changed how I lived my childhood. I still had a normal friend group and did normal kid/teen things. But I see Kids now living life in almost a drug induced euphoria thanks to social media, modern culture and even drugs themselves(Which became a common trend more than it had during the mid- Late 2000s. back the Weed was like the big one that every one went for and pills were only just becoming a thing amongst us teens). This is sadly going to end so badly when the bottom finally falls out. So many are convinced that life is all about wha the internet thinks of you and that to be liked, that you need to be an influencer and have all these crazy and expensive things that people think are so desirable. Theres nothing wrong with wanting expensive/luxury items, But its a serious issue when you have teenagers and people in their early 20s trying to live their life in ways that make getting anything thats precieved as a high end status symbol, and then go around basically living hollow existences and or being societial jokes just trying to make it seem like they are in the upper end of society.

I'm not old by any means, and I still have plenty to learn, but so far the best thing I have found in life is to surround myself with genuine people, who appreciate you for who you are, and make sure you reciprocate that back to them. It goes hand in hand with being genuine with your interests as well, and realizing there is no shortcut to whatever goals you have in life. Often it's the opposite and life throws curveballs that will force you to take a detour, which can be a blessing in disguise. To an outsider, chasing hype looks very flat and shallow. Genuine passion and interest is much more enduring, and is usually more fulfilling as well.

I'm close with a young cousin who's barely a teen and getting into cars. You've probably seen it more with the kids you are around with GG, but people his age have that show off side of social media blasted in their face constantly. That's not really his personality and even then I have to remind him at times that it just makes him dumb to look up to the wrong guys. I'm hoping I can get him into building stuff, I'd think he'd love it but at least in my experience young people are a lot more wary to get tools in hand and just try. I grew up like doing that, but we didn't have phones and social media all the time. Building and fixing things was just what I did.

Car scene in my city is just awful. I stopped pulling up to the local meets because it's just devolved into people doing dumb stuff, and there have been some cases of dog fights. Yes, that kind. Cops keep shutting em down and lots of established spots have been lost and are now heat traps. A classic Triumph was rear ended on the highway last year, and the jerkoff who plowed into it going twice the speed limit laughed it off and boasted about the aftermath on TikTok. The owner and his son were fine, but they did not walk away. Now all I do is just hang with the people I know. Do my own thing, getting to know the auto specialists in the area. I don't even bother posting about my adventures. I just chill at the local timmies with that mediocre coffee and cruise town.

The car community was really fun in the early days of Instagram, KZbin and other's rise, But has since been really ruined and largely insufferable. Its now more about getting likes on social media and filming yourself and others being an actual danger to the public with cars. Sometimes expensive cars. Ive even been told by some younger people that "its good that the way car meets used to be is over, it was so boring and lame". So they decided to show up to them and just create chaos to make it more appealing for them and their little group of NPC's.

Make them tell you no - CWLemoine on youtube. The idea is to Make 'them' (the military in his case) tell you know instead of self eliminating. For example, flight school requires you to pass a vision test? Don't just assume you won't pass, even if you think you won't. Go take the test. You might pass, you might get a waiver, or at the very least you will always know that you didn't eliminate yourself. Whatever you do - don't just assume you will fail before you try. Make THEM tell you that you didn't qualify. It has nothing to do with pestering people until they give in!

Nice video Casey. Here are my thoughts. I use KZbin for Learning and for Entertainment. Firstly, If I want to learn about cars, (build, fix, restore) I watch channels like yours. In fact, your channel inspired me to buy and restore a Porsche 924. That's a huge deal for me (a poor Software Engineer) who know nothing about wrenching. Secondly, if I want some entertainment, then I go to some of the channels you specified. What they do may not be relevant, but I watch them because of the movie style thrill/adrenalin they bring in. It may or may not be legal, I am not judging, I am just having some entertainment. Legality is their problem. Vinwiki videos are short stories and they can be entertaining or educational. That's why everybody use the Vinwiki platform for story telling. Every learning video I watch, I use it to improve myself. Every entertainment video I watch, I forget and move on.

Hey, Casey! Love your channel and I have been following you for a while. As a piss poor car enthusiast with a Subaru WRX, I grew up around my dad's garage working on our crappy cars and I've always just appreciated cars because they're beautiful pieces of engineering and they're fun to drive. I love racing culture and rally is my jam, but I can appreciate a Beetle as much as an old Porsche or a DeLorean. My car I bought new and got a loan for but I'm driving it for the 30 years until it does because I love the history of the car, not because I want to be a tuner or triple the horsepower on the car for no reason. Someday I want to own a Viper too, but right now, I can only afford my WRX and that's good enough for me. It's a fun car and I'm more interested in old cars and keeping them running because I'm a backyard mechanic through and through and I enjoy driving and taking my friends and family on drives. But that's just me haha glad to hear there are people out there like me still. Keep driving man!

"Make them tell you no" is from a great guy CWLemoine on KZbin, it basically means don't count yourself out before someone of authority tells you that you can't. When he was young an optometrist told him he would never fly in the military. He originally gave up his dream but then attempted again and got in through a waiver. Basically means don't count your self out before you know the answer from the person who can truly decide. You don't know if you don't ask.

This came up in my reccomended - I don't know who you are but the video intrigued me. You make some good points - be yourself, don't let consumerism define you. But I think also you forget that some people just enjoy things because they enjoy it, not because they want clout. I'm a car photographer. Not as a career, just as a hobby, but I'm in my early twenties and that's my goal in life, to establish myself as a car photographer. If the local chapter of PCA wants photos of their car, does that make them clout chasers? If I want to take photos of their cars in hopes it can lead to exposure and I can make a career out of something I enjoy doing, does that make me a coattail rider? I'm a bad mechanic - I'm clumsy and not super technically minded, and sometimes it's easier to have a shop work on my 96 Integra, my daily driver and only car, because I don't have the tools, time, or skill to get the car operational. Does that make me fake? I think you make some good points but I also think you lose yourself in the extreme on the opposite side of the spectrum - the gatekeeper. Especially with your tone, bro.

Great discussion in this video Casey. It's one of the negative effects of social media (while a certain amount did exist before social media, it's just grown exponentially since). So many folks (especially younger folks), want over night success and don't want to put in the required work to get it done. The hard reality is true success takes time, years, decades even. I try to talk to as many younger people as I can at events to try and help them understand, as well as with my channel. I also have to say the fake watches, jewelry, clothes etc, I really can't stand. The people you're trying to impress can tell it's fake and aren't impressed. Bottom line it work hard, surround yourself with people that will help you grow as a person, make smart decisions and with time that effort will pay off. But the road to that level of success is long and extremely challenging.

I gotta admit it comes off as hating jealousy too. Not real hate. But jealousy hate. Mocking other car KZbinrs and telling people that they don't enjoy cars the way he enjoys cars. It would be one thing if he wasn't the type to use clickbait thumbnails and money in his titles to garner attention. But he does. He wants that same type of attention as the other car vloggers. He even responded to you with a pretty egotistical statement. Translation: "I am more experienced and when you get to the level of my expertise you will be able to see the things I see." IMO, massive life experience is being able to recognize that innate human emotion of jealousy and using your frontal lobe to not act on it by hating on other people. I will admit I didn't learn that ability until I was an adult. But that's all this is.. Acting out a charade and making a dumb voice to mock other people is something I haven't seen since I was in middle school. He's pretending like he's imparting some wisdom on people in this video while acting like a child.

These latest posts just make me sad. I came here for the car content and just ended up feeling deceived. I unsubscribed but come back every now and again because I think Casey has something to offer and keep hoping; but as of late it's just bitterness. Rants about education (some valid points), social media (some valid points), car culture (some valid points), but in the end there is no car content here. Just a guy maddingly sad/frustrated with life, trying to change/beat the world with words, into his vision of what ought to be. Which falls flat when you're leaning against a Lamborghini. And for a guy who talks a lot about listening, respect and understanding, he seems to have no problem taking a shit on his peers (KZbinrs) and the rich guys he wants to go racing with. "Massive life experience. When you get as much as I do, you will see what is wrong too." His words. Funny for him to type this. Extremely defensive, narcissistic, condescending and out of touch with his audience. Casey worked hard and worked his way into the same club he seems to loathe. He wants to be part of the popular, but wrestles with what he sees as the compromise (views and likes and clicks), and that is his trophy ladened gilded cage. Ficarra, Hoovie, Tavarish, Bolian, Dereck at Vice Grip, Iron Trap, Make It Kustom and Bennetts Customs all get one thing...happy to be where they are and share positivity and car content. "When you get as much as I do..." Yuppers we should all get as much as he does (family, home, cars, motorcycles, etc.). I am sorry that your past scarred you so deeply that you can't move forward and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Rooting for the guy, but he just keeps walking around his cars and life, and not getting into gear and going somewhere, anywhere.

I stumbled on this just as you uploaded it so I hope that doesn't make me a huge f a n Boi ii 😉 But I've stuck with you for this long, even if, at times, I don't really agree with everything you say but I respect the perspective and the experience that's coming from. Too many people my age (I'm 21 as I write this) will just discount and disregard anyone who at large doesn't fit with what they deem "right". I think that's bullshit. I dunno, Casey. You've always stuck out to me as genuine and I appreciate you're doing this series of vids even if it's evident this whole culture disgusts you now, hope you do what's best for you ultimately as much as I'd like to see more of what you've got to show. Me? I'm trying to get somewhere aswell. Trying to finish up the first few vids I wanna make, the thing I've noticed with that, aswell as my uni professors all talking down this phenomenon of the influencer and me agreeing... really, integrity is important. Me liking cars and seeing the people who get access to them and do vids with them...honestly it's what separates people I'd class as high as journalists from clout chasers. What keeps me going is that what eventually is worth it, lasts. I want to believe that at least. It might take a long time for that to happen but a good quality product, a genuine product lasts. Too bad that there's rich guys where that doesn't matter, it still would never be something I'd respect. Props for keeping it real. Hope I didn't make you hurl.

I had been chasing after a car for a bit and working my way up to it for a while and it wasn’t to impress anyone else, but it was so I could enjoy it and have fun. I now own that car (22 Corolla hatch 6 speed manual), it was an attainable goal for me and I am still loving every second of it. A lot of the guys where I work have trucks and SUV’s and they rag on me sometimes but I don’t care because I didn’t want a truck, I had wanted that car ever since it came out 4 years ago. Cars are personal, they are exhilarating, they are fun, they engineering marvels. Sadly now a-days they are used for internet clout and not for enjoyment on KZbin much anymore. I see KZbinrs buying cars they say they will keep and then sell them or give them away after only a couple of months. Makes me sad. They are built to be enjoyed not traded for large sums of money because of some significance. Last thing I will say is this; The Ferrari F40 is arguably one of the best drivers cars of all time and the internet has tons of car videos on the F40. When have you EVER seen someone push the car anywhere close to the limit? Now think about how many times you have seen beauty shots and “garage tours”. Yeah that’s as far as any of those cars really ever go.

i like cars for the design and art as well as the driving expirence. sure i like the looks i get when i pull up to the gas pumps or turn up at a car meet because that usually means i get to talk to people and answer some questions or get some neat history about the car i have or maybe some maintanance tips. for Example i have a Buick Enclave a fairly common car in the states but very rare here in Estonia, and it has an unusual design(i love it because it has some neat coke bottle like lines) unlike any other SUV people usually see here. but online the likes dont do anything for me because they are just soulless clicks.

I've never been to cars coffee - probably would.. but I just enjoy driving and I drive a hell of a lot.. Just me.. I'm going to watch those episodes I missed these past couple weeks. Thanks for posting and I hope you keep ringing the bell - I seriously hope that not all your subscribers are as old as me.. hahahh!! DMAX

I daily drive my sonic blue pearl 2003 Mustang GT 5speed. It’s low miles I’ve done a lot of work to it. It’s nothing special and most people wouldn’t give a damn about it but I like it. It’s in great shape and garage kept so I’m proud of it. I don’t care about all the flashy glamour. PS Casey, I’m 39 and never drove any of my Mustangs on the sidewalk 😂 And I have front ball joints to replace tomorrow morning on the ground because I do all the work myself too.

I gotta say, I really agree. The car scene these days is chock full of people who really don't about cars, they're just interested in using it to get clout. There's the squatted truck guys, camber gang, tanker over gang, and other assorted Dbags acting like idiots. Now I just go talk about or drive cars with my two best friends and try REALLY HARD to ignore everything else.

I totally agree with you Casey, the number of "fanboi's" who follow the top media savvy car owners is just a joke. Literally the other day, VINWIKI (which I love btw), had some guy on there following Andrew Tate and his Bugatti. Why is that something to brag about? Can't afford a Lambo/Ferrari etc etc, buy a 2nd hand motorbike and then realise that you've got a Super Car beater for $10k or pay for the latest Ducati Panigale V4 for $30k! You get people stop you and talk to YOU about your bike and talk to you about yourself and your passion for bikes. People have gotten so wrapped up in social media that they don't realise their own life is making someone else rich/richer whilst they continue to waste their time in Ubers chasing Andrew Tate!

On top of all this the fake "interest" and "social currency" in relation to enthusiast cars has inflated the value and priced a lot of people who were genuinely just interested in tinkering with cars out of the market. 5 years ago I could have bought a 996 911 or E36 M3 for 8K and kept it running by doing my own work and research...now either of those are 20K on the low end and increasing at a rate where people constantly shame each other for driving them...obviously those are just examples that apply to me but it gets even worse with other examples (ie supra).

i love cars but HATE the car community honestly. I can't even watch youtubers now because of this clout chasing crap. And i HATE car shows for the same reason. Its all attention seeking nonsense. Yep and when people resort to "eh yeah only have 300 followers, that means youre lame" in comments or during videos/discussions. Yeah I don't have 3.5mil tictok followers (which 80% are bots) or have 20mil subs on KZbin. I pay my bills, enjoy my life, make and design some cool stuff, if by some chance someone likes it too and what's to buy it, I'll sell it. There's plenty of "fake it until you make it" creative designers out there too. Where they'll pass someone else's work off as their own. 10-15+ years ago if you made any art or video that resembled a character or brand and threw it on a website as your own. It got taken done instantly or you got a cease and desist letter. Now people are taking clips from movies (Marvel/Disney movies) slapping them together and naming it, "Leaked spiderman 4 movie" it has 2 million views in 10 days. Meanwhile about 4 years ago I got a WMG audio claim on KZbin for a 15 second video I made in 2008 that was on an account I havent used since 2012 and was still stuck at 300 views. Go figure.
