muzakaz - I'm afraid you have your settings as such so that I can't reply to your comment. If you're using this as trim on a bigger knitted piece, make sure the RS (right side) or odd-numbered rows match up with the right side of the rest of your work.

Love this patter and love how your tutorial breaks it down. I started what I am calling a "bus blanket" for a friend who sleeps on the bus on our way to work. The stitch is fun and addicting hopefully I will stop before this "blanket" gets too big! Thanks again for another entertaining tutorial.

The instructions for working this stitch in-the-round are in the video description field, just below the video. There is no setup round when you work in-the-round.

Yes - you can knit the whole thing with all of the knits on the front and the purls on the back (no purl bump ridge). There is a chance that the fabric will want to curl a bit if you do that - but it really depends on the yarn and needles you're using. I'm sure it will be pretty!

I suggest you look on Ravelry for a baby blanket pattern. There are thousands of them there, and you can find something you like with complete instructions for knitting. Much easier to work from a written pattern.

You will need to knit up your own swatch (casting on a multiple of 18 stitches), then measure the number of stitches you're getting per inch. (Needle size and yarn are totally your choice. If you like the fabric you're making, you've got a winner.) Baby blankets are about 36-40", so figure how many stitches you'll need to cast-on to get that size.
@verypinkknits

That's totally your choice, but yes, baby blankets are often square.

Yes, I always wash and block my swatches, so I can see what the item will look like (and what my gauge will be) after washing. One note - the yarn you're using won't change much with washing, so it probably isn't all that necessary.

Just a normal bind-off, on Row 2, which is a plain knitting row.

Yes - the yarn-overs should be treated as regular stitches every time you encounter one.

ok u are freaking me out Hehehe! ( I watch these vids a lot before going to sleep, they are prolly giving me subliminal ideas maybe) I had taken out the book Last Minute Gifts from the library 2 weeks ago and decided to cast on the Chevron scarf with some yarn I got a long time ago on the VERY DAY u were prolly taping this episode.. weEeEeeeiiiRrrRrDdd!!! =) Good video btw. Thanks for postin' it.

You should always keep the same number of stitches when you're working this stitch, every row. If you end up with an extra, you have most likely worked an extra yarn-over. Keep careful count, every row!

Kimberly - if your swatch looked good (and wavy), I'm not sure why your blanket isn't. This may help you - after you chain your multiple of 18 stitches, go back through the chain and clip in a stitch marker (or safety pin) every 18 stitches. That way you will know you're placing the stitches in your first row correctly, and you won't end up with a surprise when you get to the end. Subsequent rows are easier, because you have a baseline of stitches to make sure you're on track.

Hi NIcolas - are you on Ravelry? It's free, and it's full of patterns to browse. There are hundreds of baby blanket patterns available there. Check it out!

I tried to find a good instructions on how to knit this in the round, but never found anything. Thanks heaps for the flat and round versions! Is it possible to substitute the garter ridge (or you called them purl bumps) for stockinette?

So if I wanted to do this in the round, I would knit the set-up row, row 1 would be the same, then purl row 2, and knit rows 3 and 4?

oops, you did say bind off on row two and I assume you meant with a normal knit 2 slip first stitch over the second kind of bind off? or do you use a different bind off?

I give instructions in the video description for any stitch count. But it is up to you to check your gauge (stitches per inch) with your chosen needle size and yarn to determine your gauge, and the size you want. A little math and swatching is involved with what you're after.

So, my question is... if this is being used as a trim on the bottom of a dress, sweater.... when you want the stitch to be in a straight line again on the RS.... do you just continue with knit on the RS, and purl the back? What happens with the fabric when you do this?

I really appreciate your videos :-) very helpful info! I learned feather and fan about 10 years ago with a cast on of 17 stitches and always thought I was doing it the right way until recently when I realized my stitch count was off on a pattern. I do: k2tog 3 times (yo,k1) five times, yo, k2tog 3 times. Obviously, for a specific pattern I will have to pay attention to what the stitch count is and modify my method when needed, but, is there any other reason for that extra stitch?
