The only bit of criticism I can offer you on this one, and I hesitate to give it because I know I can't do better and I really like what you've done here, is that everyone in the action sequences seem too rigid, try watching how people move and replicate it in your work to get a more natural feel in your fight scenes. Other than that, you did a great job here!

Marxus Cattimore the problem is in the upper body. He stands straight up for nearly every movement. In reality he would tilt and turn with every swing. There's no impact or momentum with what there is now. What he's done he's done well, he just needs to fine tune some parts and add extra movements in most frames, which he improves on in the others

To anyone saying that Brandon (the character) hits himself when firing his weapon in sword mode, if you watch closely you'll notice that every time he does fire his weapon in sword mode the gun part is angled so that the bullet always misses him, whether it be closely or by a wide margin, this shows an incredible attention to detail when animating.

A very well made aniimation for the weapon. Also i noticed as long as he is using Opus as a gun he doesn't attack. He only counter-attacks. And when he pulls his blade out he fights like a samurai. Alot of power and speed behind every slash, mostly aiming for a killing blow with the first attack.

It's amazing to see how (Whether intentional or not,) you made Coal look and feel like the good guy in this video, but he's team SLVR's antagonist. It makes us as the viewers feel a sort of connection from the start, allowing us to think of him as a person and not "just the edgy bad guy".

Hi Mark Zhang!! I'm really Impressed on your "style" in creating your fan-made trailer on RWBY. At First, this video seemed interesting, But now when I played your video, my excitement just came to a whole new level!! Your character design, the color, his creative weapon (BTW "Magnum Opus" Seems legitimately Badass!!) and his lone wolf aura has brought my Hands Down to the floor and look up to the sky and Sing Hallelujah!! (Don't laugh because of my Honesty here.) No kidding, the Animation you created, it just blows my mind!! Although it seemed or may be a bit choppy, the movements aren't fluid and honestly it seemed like a turn based RPG game, like an alternate motion, but overall I'm giving this a 9\10!! Monty Oum will be so proud of you for his talent in making this had passed on to you. I am incredibly impressed. Far better than I can do at the very least. However I kept getting the feeling that he'd be shooting himself with those angles when he shot his gun. I mean I could be wrong, it was moving rather fast and it's merely a 2D view point, but I feel like that might be something you want to work on assuming to still fires bullets when it's in sword mode. I saw your more recent work and your animation has improved dramatically. Keep up the good work.

Frodlex Thanks. It has nothing to do with angles though. The bullets in the clip face forwards in gun mode. In sword mode only the gun barrel has flipped to the opposite direction so the bullets are still propelled away from him and are ejected out the side with the casings (though that part wasn't shown).

Your ideas for fighting choreography are great, there is nothing left to be desired from camera angles and your character design is fairly interesting. Bonus points for a really good weapon, it even tops most of actual RWBY weapons since it looks more solid. What you need to work on, however, are movements. Most of hits (1:00), cuts (2:18) and jumps (2:30) look too static, too still, Brandon frequently uses only one arm while the rest of his body is like of a manequinn. That's something that burdens an otherwise great animation.

Even though this was the first trailer you posted, I still love re-watching this one and seeing all of the little details you put into it. For instance, Charbonneau clearly had no interest in killing anyone aboard the truck. Sure, he gives them all a good ass-kicking and uses one of 'em as a human shield, but he never aims his gun to kill. Hell, he makes sure to go easy on them until they all run off. He only starts getting serious when the dust constructs show up and even then he's still calm. Also some of his simpler actions (like when he nudges one of the constructs off his sword with his foot at 2:19 or when he grabs the brim of his hat to keep it from falling off at 2:35) gave him these touches of personality I just couldn't overlook. ...Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing it. ^-^;;

There is a very noticeable difference in this video compared to your later ones for SLVR. The latter three are smoother, the quality better. There’s a fluidity in the SLVR trailers you’ve posted that is lacking in this one. Cudos to you for improving so quickly. A year isn’t a lot of time, and to have improved as much as you have is really breathtaking. I very much enjoyed watching and rewatching these videos. I just have one question in regards to this character...is he supposed to be a good guy, bad guy, or somewhere in between?

the guy that made this definently has talent but the thing that bugged me (and i realize im nit picking) is the fact that the charcoals motions were all to compartmentalized. by that i mean if he blocked a sword coming from the right side his arm moved up to block the sword and that was it. not trying to be negative again the guy clearly has talent its just the lack of fluid motion that makes it seem off. other than that its a really good video

I dunno. I mean like, he seemed more like a blend of err, Lie Ren, and uhh... that one Blake girl? Yeah, basically. I don't think anyone on RWBY should look like crossovers. His semblance seems to be fire, and thats basically yang's semblance. By blend, I mean like His weapon is VERY similiar to Blake's. Gunkatana? Exactly what these two do. Said Lie Ren due to being pistols, but I should overlook that. I don't think the characters are supposed to look like another person. You know who I am talking about, Roman Torchwich (but thats clothing-wise) Overall, I don't think it would make it into RWBY.

That's some very solid animation right there, with the right mix of awesome fighting skills and throwing physics out the window (off the bridge?) to make it look like RWBY. The shot used when he unfolded his blade was also pretty freaking cool. Honestly I'd say it easily compares to some of Monty's older stuff (the earlier Dead Fantasies, Haloid). Nice job, man. Broski needs to learn to work on his upper body skills. In actual combat, he would have to find ways to incorporate that weapon of his into his fighting style. His weapon isn't as heavy as the CVFN team's, so he can't really be doing slow and heavy moves. And it isn't so light that he can pull off ninja-like reflexes, either. So, just upper body needs a lot more focus if you're gonna use the lower body that much and with that skill, and maybe a little bit quicker. Remember, Nora carries Maginhild around all day, and Ruby has her scythe readily on hand, and they're both pretty speedy. The main difference is that Nora puts a bit more momentum into her attacks. Maybe you can use that as a sort of reference.

I love the creativity that you put into your weapons. The Synchronized Dust Projection Jacket is by far one of the best I have seen in animated fan trailers. I especially like this one though (may I call it a Machete Pistol?) due to the way that you have made it more versatile than just a sword. I noticed a lot of fan-made weapons have two settings: Gun and Melee. Here, even in the gun form, it is still used effectively as a defensive weapons, perfect for disarming opponents. And your idea for Viridian's Semblance is quite well established. Though I do wonder if her acceleration glyphs would come into conflict with the Schnee glyphs, as far as purpose and design go. Overall, another well done trailer!

Hey, after watching this for the umpteenth time, I just noticed something. At the end, when Brandon did the zantetsuken-esque move, 'warping' past the samuraibots to cleave them all at once.. There was a heat haze effect just before he 'zips' past the bots. Which normally shouldn't be doable, because no space to go between them. ..Was that a semblance indicator?

Huh, thought the heat blade would just be a function of the weapon. Still, given I didn't see the 'heat haze' anywhen else in the video except that 'zantetsuken' moment, it seems out of place in that case. I wasn't talking about the orange glow of heat on his weapon either, when I said 'heat haze', for clarity.

Ok, I will admit this is cool, but forgive me if this comment breaks the string of positive comments. I love the trailer, really I do, but I only have one question: his weapon. I heard gunshots while he was swinging it in sword mode, but the barrel is facing him so wouldn't he be shooting himself? If he uses the recoil from the shots to speed up the swing of his weapon, I suggest aiming it away from his face and placing the barrel a little higher up on the blade. That way, you get your propulsion and also not run the risk of blasting yourself in the face by accident. A good reference would be Nero's Red Queen from DMC4. Just a little insight. I hope you make more of these because these are quite good ;)

shadowchaos1 Thanks, I'm surprised no one else brought that up yet. It's actually not possible for him to shoot himself in sword mode even if he aims it directly at himself. You see, when the weapon is a gun, the bullets in the clip are facing forwards with the gunpowder behind the metal so that they can be shot in that direction, and when it transforms into a sword, only the gun barrel changes to the opposite direction while the handle and the bullets in it still face forwards. That way, all of the momentum of the bullet is transferred to the sword when it's fired and both the tip and shell of the bullet are ejected out the side (though that part wasn't shown).

I can see you doing extremely talented things in your future. Very talented work. Monty would be proud to see someone being inspired by his work like this! I hope you continue. Don't let anyone tell you that your work isnt good and keep moving forwards, as Monty always said and did. I'd love to see something you do in the future when you have motion capture and other things. My only constructive criticism is that sometimes you would just have the action piece (whatever charcoal was using to attack arms legs, or otherwise) sometimes you only moved that part and not the entire body so it ended up looking a little clunky. (also please don't take this as me being mean just pointing something out from viewer standpoint). Otherwise this is fantastic work and I do hope you continue. Do it not just for Monty though, do it for you!

Okay, so the concepts here aren't exactly like RWBY, but holy moly that was awesome! Magnum Opus is this guns-plus-swords idea done right. It uses the recoil from the gun to strengthen his swing! And in gun form he can catch other people's swords and break them with his shots! It's awesome AND practical (assuming super-strength or durability such as RWBY's Aura concept is keeping Brandon's arm attached)! Genius!

idk, the weapon in a way seems a little impractical when it's in it's sword form. Where the gun is placed is what I'm talking about, I know people will be like "He makes sure its not pointed at him when he fires" or something, but wouldn't that be annoying sometimes? Especially in the heat of battle? I dont know, thats just me. Still a badass concept though.

My theory for the melting effect of his blade and bullets goes as follows: his semblance allows him to super heat anything that he comes into physical contact with and the grey-metal parts of the blade as well as the inner parts of the bullets, whereas the black parts of the blade are perhaps an obsidian/steel alloy, which would supposedly have a higher melting point, and this still be able to cut through the samurai bots like butter, but retain their brooding color.
