I agree, shamefully a little under used I mean in context to the story. She got a fair bit of screen time playing cruella deville but I mean actual backstory, motivations, time to become a nemesis. She could have been a scheming character that goes from a tool by the tal shiar ( I didn't quite like the zhat vash thing personally and the synth story much keep it on the romulans and intrigue) to getting rid of oh by exposing her to a trap, revealing she actually works for sela, then inevitably betrays sela and becomes matriarch of mayhem with access to all the resources of the remnant empire. She's got a mix of xena onatopp and the joker with a dash keyser soze about her and she's plotted this a long time. The tal shiar weakened after the dominion war. She was an enforcer who rose through the ranks quickly because she's a psycho and ruthless and efficient. Sela was wise to keep her head down after the war. Knowing that shinzon would collapse and kept narissa close as her secret weapon. Narak isn't actually her brother in the literal sense nor some adopted brother or any game of thrones incest crap, but as in the cabal brotherhood of the clandestine tal shiar. He's an ex unification supporter that fell for narissa and gave up his comrades because she used him. He initially doesn't have the will or knowledge to part from her. She uses him for cheap sex and Intel. Eventually he becomes a key player, to her downfall, but he's stuck now. She has power over him and she likes it. Romulans live as long as vulcans and narissa is still young for a romulan. She's now prospering. Potential, but now old enough to put her plan into full swing. Sela was behind the Hobus supernova. It was a plan she had hatched as far back as generations when she dispatched a team to Dr Sorans laboratory to obtain his trilithium weapon. Her plan was to make the empire weakened by staging an event that would cement her leadership after an atrocity and as a rallying cry galvanise a frenzied unilateral support to regain ground lost in the dominion war after all the major powers scrambled after it. Shinzon thalaron plan she let go ahead because it would do the same thing essentially.

I can imagine her resume involved a one person recovery of a starfleet scout ship as seen in Insurrection- to be used in a plan later someday, by feigning a distress signal pretending to be a freighter pilot. Once aboard, she got friendly with the crew. When two of the engineers beamed aboard her ship to enact repairs, the others getting her a cup of coffee and a blanket and they get talking she knifed the remaining starfleet officers and commendeered the ship. Destroyed her freighter and casually flew back across the neutral zone as if it was a morning jog. Then, when a war bird commander questioned her authority, she bided her time. The next port that subcommander was whisked away to a detention facility where narissa gave her a choice. Kill her husband and prove her loyalty, or her children would be taken for rehabilitation. The clock is ticking. The subcommander went through with it tears in her eyes but they both knew they had no choice. The tal shiar took her children anyway because they had no suitable guardian and the empire doesn't tolerate orphans if the subcommander was lost in action, they aren't savages. She's a piece of work. A viper. She goes after Sela next because a half Romulan half human doesn't have the longevity as a half vulcan human and sela is getting old and slower. She will topple the chief schemer and mentor and then she will be in charge. The beta quadrant falls first. Then the alpha. Then who knows.

I had imagined her character telling a story from her past that informs the kind of sociopath she is "when I was young, I grew up on the streets of verix. It was a poor colony on the fringes of the empire. I was starving and so I stole an apple from the trading stands. There was a boy. Scrawny thing. I gave him the apple. Not much later, the militia came by looking for the thief. I turned the boy over. I watched as they found the apple, then kicked and beat him to death in front of me. Why did i do it? Ha you see I didnt give the apple out of pity. I knew they'd come and it was one less mouth to compete with tomorrow. And it was sweeter than any bite of that apple could have been"

After listening to Sammy Hagar, I see Narissa and I think -- "Tight pants and lipstick, she's dancing on a razor's edge! She holds her own with all the boys, cuts through the crowd just like a wedge. Fanatics tearing down the barricade trying to reach her stage, can you feel the rage?!" Heavy metal noise!

Narissa and Narek were the most interesting characters on the show, but the aggressive attitude toward her brother was annoying. I loved the scene where they find each other on the crashed cube and embrace. Shame she was reduced to the cardboard villain. On the other hand, she pulled off the pointy ears on par with Jolene Blalock and that's saying something.

How is it possible that Narissa is WAYYY hotter than Peyton List? edit - Her Star Fleet persona is exactly as attractive as Peyton List. The above question references her as the Romulan Narissa Rizzo, that is.

I find that happens a lot with characters vs their actors, both men and women. Sometimes it's the reverse too.

There is something going on in this show in regards to its villains that I am stunned no one has noticed or commented on. In classic/old school works of fiction the villains were predominantly male. Usually outnumbering their female counterparts 5:1. Male villains were generally the main threat of the story. The mastermind, the serial killer, the conqueror, the terrorist leader, the mustache twirling fiend. Although many male villains were depicted as tragic or sympathetic they rarely had redemption arcs or became good guys. They were often evil and without any hope or desire for atonement. They were introduced as wicked people and eventually met their karmic death at the hands of the hero. However, female villains were completely different. Although female villains always existed, they were hardly ever the main threat of the story. Usually they were a subordinate for the main villain or they were a minor solo villain who was of little threat to society as a whole. They were the seductress, the sexy cat-burglar, the woman scorned, the mama bear, or the gold-digger. They usually only did bad things because they had to or were forced into it by an evil male villain. They were often conflicted and guilt-ridden about their wicked deeds. They would often betray the villain and side with the heroes (sometimes after falling in love with hero) If they were truly sadistic or malevolent they were almost always depicted as being completely insane and could be rehabilitated. Redemption arcs were also extremely common. Examples include Cat woman (a minor villainess who just wants steal things), Scarlet Witch (a sympathetic major villain who will do anything to see here kids again), Harley Quinn (A mentally ill psychotic who is in love with the male villain she works for). Season 1 of Picard is unique, however, in that it completely reverses this character dynamic. With the exception of the cosmic technological abomination that appears at the end of the season, the season’s main villains are made up almost entirely of women. The evil organization, the Jhad Vash, are an all female cult that drive the primary threat of the story. The mastermind of the story, Commodore O, is a female Romulan. Her subordinate, Narissa is the main threat that the heroes face directly throughout the story, a sadistic sociopath who kills without remorse or guilt. She is cruel but also very clearly of sound mind. Finally, Bijayzl, is a mob boss who runs an organization that dissects former Borg and sells their body parts for profit. Even her surgeons are all women. This is most shown in the character dynamic between the sibling villains Narissa and Narek. Narek is basically playing a seductress archetype. He is a subordinate to Narissa and is tasked with seducing Soji. He is shown to be reluctant and conflicted about the morality of his mission and starts to develop feelings for his target. Feelings that could eventually evolve into a redemption arc. When Narissa suspects him of not being able to go threw with killing Soji, she uses intimidation and coercion to insure his compliance. Invading his personal space, verbal threats, choking him, and even forcefully making sexually suggestive physical contact. Essentially bullying him. Intimidation tactics frequently used by male villains to control their reluctant female subordinate.

It was an absolute mistake to kill her off. She walked a line between intensity and self-aware absurdity that left a TON of room for development. Season 1 tried some odd things and failed, but Season 2 was a disaster. Season 3 had potential, but leaned into nostalgia too hard. Amanda Plummer's Vadic started in some ways similar to List's Narissa, occasionally lapsing into villainous absurdity ("goodbye, goodbye..."). Then they just.... ??? Pick a tone and stick with it. At this point, Trek fans are mature enough (even new ones) to tolerate a little self-aware parody.

@@dmitritobias You really haven't missed much. I gave up on Season 2 right at the start, and it was a disaster. Season 3 seemed like a course overcorrection on a very small budget. Some people LOVED it (and they bought off half of the KZbin reviewers with full season access), but it was god-awful writing and thousands of "hey thats from TNG!" moments. Sorry to rant, but another thing the Picard series did is ruin the character of Seven. I don't mean the catsuit and crap, but she used to be a fully defined character. In Picard, she's just an angry girlboss acting tough and military all the time. Its just really terrible writing.

@@danieldevries2644 rant away my dude. seems like they did season one then didn't know where to take it from there. btw, if you watched Babylon 5, the "stole" Picard Season 1 plot from there. The idea that there was already a war between organic and machines and the machines won and evolved into God-like beings and every 5 few thousand years they would come to eradicate organic lifeform so we don't evolve further and become their adversary. granted, Picard threw in the contextual AI element into it but still...
