This is an amazing piece! The influence of J.S. Bach is really striking. Fanny chose such a serious, philosophical text, and makes an intellectual mark with her contrapuntal approach. I can't believe there is only one commercial recording of this cantata (and it is out of print). This music should be better known!

In that period it was very modern to know the music of Bach....it was perceived as old, the music of the past....with the brothers Mendelssohn Berlin discovered the music of Bach ! It is incredible for us nowadays but it was like that ...

James, I simply could not agree with you more. This is a totally underated masterpiece of the repertoir. All the classical music broadcasting Companies in the world should have realised this a long time ago! Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn) should be recognised by the world ,for her rightful membership as one of the top 20 composers in the history of humanity! Especially since she helped her brother so much !!

yes this is completely true; she helped him a lot. Just read their numerous letters to see this point..

Most attractive, uplifting, and very competently written - and I definitely agree with those that can hear the influence of Bach. Excellent choral singing too!

and we must consider that in this period knowing Bach is something very modern because in Germany and France for example Bach was completely forgotten with all the musicians of the past...in France Pauline Viardot the great soprano worked to make this music known to the french public and the same did Mendelssohn in Germany. Fanny worked a lot to prepare Passione of San Matteo with the orchestra and the chor in her big house in, berlino if i remember well, while her brother was abroad. We have a lot of letters about this preparation by her who wrote to the brother to keep him informed of the progress.

I recognize a strong influence of Bach´s G minor Mass... beautiful both works!

A great piece! Sounds more like the sister of Bach than the sister of Mendelssohn, but that's hardly surprising. After all, it was the Mendelssohns who rediscovered Bach and gave him back to the world.

I don't agree. Listen to Felix's sacred pieces and you wil se that this is 100% sister of Mendelssohn.

Beautiful piece, full of joy ! i like a lot this tempo because it let explose the great joy that there is in this piece. We can also think that Fanny wanted to have fun, composing in the spirit of bach ? at that time people was rediscovering him in Germany... A tribute in a word, as some composers have done sometimes...... this work, for me, is the most beautiful of her that i have heard; It must be really nice to sing. It is obvious that Fanny had nothing to envy to his brother as talent ..... only the opportunities..... to be able to travel, to receive advice, to confront herself with the contemporaries, personal freedom, possibility to dedicate one's energies to one purpose all Indispensable ingredients to create..... it is wonderful that with all the limits that women experienced on their own skin they could still give something to the world !

All of Fanny's choral works deserve to be recorded. And to find a Karajan or Colin Davis or a strong perceptive woman conductor to bring out the power and depths of this amazing composer.

10indians10, she didn't have the opportunities he had -- to travel, to publish, to receive public performances, and criticism for her completed works. And what good is talent if you don't have opportunity and encouragement? When you read about how closely Felix and Fanny worked together, it is clear that she was his equal -- at least.

After hearing this Masterpiece, people should surely ask the question "How much did Fanny help her brother with his Masterpieces ? In other words, did Felix actually compose much at all, or did he just leave it to his big Sister who was a far superior composer , but pretended that he had composed it all!
@pilouetmissiou6 жыл бұрын
noo, we can not say this Mark. She was great with a lot of talent and didn't have the personal freedom to give her life to the music because she was a woman and so she did what she could and in these circumstances it is a lot, but we cannot say that her brother was not great too. As a man he was completely free and had all the opportunities to develop himself and did it.
@zippybogard6 жыл бұрын
Mimi, you have it the nail on the head when you said she had no personel freedom. The reality is, that no Women had any freedom either then, or only slightly better now! I am a man, but I sometimes wish I was a Women, so that I could stand up , and protect your rights properly, unlike what you women appear to be doing (which is virtually nothing) to protect yourselves against men!!!! You rightly say that Felix was completely free to compose, but Felix was never told NOT TO COMPOSE by both his Sister or his Father (because he was a Man), yet , at the same time, was composing with the help of his Sister, who he was advising, never to compose since she was a Woman ! How do you women manage to take such nonsense from Men?
@TheBureauOfMeteorology5 жыл бұрын
@@zippybogard It isn't true to say that women don't do anything to stand up against men. And in cases where they don't, you've got to understand that an entire patriarchal society stands behind men and empowers them to remain in control. So it isn't anyone's place to cast shade on womankind for being dominated.
@heaven73608 ай бұрын
@@zippybogard it's an understatement to say women were oppressed. Ignored, stifled...never enough words....and this lasted for eons. It's a miracle we have come as far as we have. Men should never question the inner anger and repression held in and finally expressed....it's not amusing or trite.

(as I wrote on another performance of this just now) I really WANTED to like this piece, but it sounds like a pleasant student exercise in neo-Baroque style. It's strange that although it seems to want so much to sound Baroque, the mostly very long themes rarely result in any serious vocal counterpoint. Each voice tends to sings a long theme while another voice or two sing(s) mostly held notes, creating a not very contrapuntal effect. Disappointing.
@georgewchadwick910010 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for man-splaining that! You're obviously way smarter than Fanny Hensel, and she deserves to be forgotten.🙄
@jsbrules10 ай бұрын
You didn’t have to make a sarcastic inaccurate personal attack on me, I was expressing my opinion of this one piece, not dissing the brilliant Fanny Hensel, who does not deserve to be forgotten, and was a very gifted composer who wrote and published some great stuff despite being victimized by the sexist society she lived in and many of her family (but fortunately not her husband, who was supportive). The reason I said it was “disappointing” is that I’d been listening to her music a lot recently and I was really looking forward to hearing this, as she was so deeply devoted to and expert on Bach. But I think this piece did not work. My OPINION (not “mansplaining” any more than them) is that others here are overpraising it and she wrote some much better music!
