Then fan failer: instantly back on metro north or New York Subway

#FanRailer: Just curious, the subway cars that run on the CTA... could they run on the BMT or IRT tracks of the NYC MTA? The car width, just from what I'm viewing on this video, seems like IRT width cabs.

No, they dont. These are manufactured by BUDD, and the only train MTA had running from BUDD was the R32's which got retired.

@@NortheastRailroadFanner the 2600s are from Budd. Most of the trains in this vid are the 5000 series from Bombardier.

Ok before someone else answers incorrectly, YES, the CTA cars could theoretically run on the NYC system, with a few modifications to the third rail power pickup system. Chicago cars are smaller than B division NYC cars and would theoretically fit in the BMT / IND NYC system. They are however, wider than the IRT cars, so they would not fit in the IRT side of the system. That being said, Chicago cars have a different loading gauge than NYC, so they would not be fit for revenue service in NYC.

Seems like nobody answers the original commenter’s actual question. He was asking if the CTA could run on the BMT and IRT lines of the MTA not vice versa. Therefore, in theory it could as it’s a lot easier to adapt a train with a smaller loading gauge and turning radius to a railroad with larger attributes.

The CTA 'L' cars are smaller than the IRT sized vehicles. Due to tight curves on the Loop elevated, every CTA railcar is restricted to 1892 dimensions.
