You are great. i really wish i were born in england. i love to explain, discuss and teach,so... sorry for my bad english, here my theory: the melancholie is visible on the harmonics. on chorus first "sleep" she sings the note before the resolution. (note: a basic chord is made of 3 notes together. 1, 3 and 5.) that sang note on "sleep" is the 3. the bass plays the 5. others instruments make it lighter for the 1. the 1 being the base of the chord, if the bass plays the 5, as the bass should play the base, so the 5 makes the chord sound like it flies in sustain. so the chord sound in sustain, with the voice before resolution. on the 2nd "sleep" this is the resolution (emotionally we hear a submission). why resolution ? cause the chord now play the same note on the bass but the chord has changed and make that 5 being the 1. so at that moment we have the bass playing 1, the voice singing 5, and the harmonies make a light 3. Essential note: the bass plays the same note on the 2 "sleep". the first time is called a reversed chord. the cool thing here is first it flies, and second it falls. BUT the bass was already waiting for the fall as it was playing the future 1. and there we find what we feel. first there is a question, unknown, loneliness, sadness. until secondly she accepts the sleep, with sadness, which she says "imagining you are there". music is a langage. for real. songs can be great if you can adapt the lyrics to the music emotions.

Others have pointed this out but new posters keep raising the Damon Albarn and Justice Frischmann breakup. This (excellent) performance is from 1995; Albarn and Frischmann broke up in 1998 before Blur’s 1999 album 13 (you can look it up). Watch the video carefully from the beginning. Albarn looks unhappy even before Chrissie Hynde makes her Justine-in-America comment. Hynde didn’t say anything obviously or overtly rude to Albarn in the video. Maybe she did at rehearsal or before the show. To me, it seems like Albarn is angry and pouting about something even as he walked to the piano. But he should have been professional about whatever was bugging him and not let it show. To me, he comes off as rude. I say this as a fan of both Albarn/Blur and Hynde/Pretenders.

I disagree. Albarn and Frischmanns relationship had lots of ups and downs before the final parting, one or more of which Hynd is probably referring to. If so, then what Hynde said to Albarn at the beginning of the vid is fairly obviously a sarky remark. Who knows if there was or wasn't some interchange prior to the filming. Anyhow, to me, Albarn doesn't look at all happy. He did though come on, did the piano accompaniment, and left the stage. I can only say that, in my opinion , it's very uncool to come out on a public stage with some smartass comment about your guest's love life. As it happens I really like that song, as performed by Hynde and The Pretenders all those years ago..., a far more complete rendition than the original , as written and performed by ex-hubbie Ray Davies and The Kinks.

If Hynde touched a nerve, it would have been accidental and unintentional. Hynde's comment doesn't come off as smartass. Suggesting that Hynde may have said something offensive before the show is just speculation. It is equally plausible that Albarn was just really hungover, but hat too would be speculation. Without more information, it's impossible to know why Albarn acted the way he did. I do agree that it's a great song and that Hyde and Albarn did a beautiful stripped down performance of it.

Written by Ray Davies of Kinks' fame. I agree this version is a little too fast. Kia does a good version which is much slower, but for my taste I prefer the Kinks' original demo recording. Cher and others have also recorded this. I read somewhere that Ray wrote it about his wife, when she was in Hospital having their baby. Ray of course lived with Chrissie Hynde at one point.
